Home Improvement was the #1 Show in The Summer

I never realized how popular Grace Under Fire was. It was ahead of "Friends." Of course, that was before "Friends" moved to Thursdays at 8pm, a move, I thought would hurt the show. :)

I also didn't realize that "Wings" was on Thursdays as of the 1994-95 season. That was it's last season on Thursdays, because the next season it moved to Tuesdays right before "NewsRadio."

It's nice to see a couple of my favorite shows on the top twenty list (Wings, Ellen). I know "NewsRadio" made it a couple of times before it's third season. I just can't seem to find that magazine anywhere.

I don't think it was in the original Thursday night lineup that year...it was mad about you, friends, Seinfeld....and that madman and the people show >.>

You also have to look at the time slot, which was right after Home Improvement which was a huge hit. There are several shows IMO that had inflating ratings from having a #1 show as their lead in...some of those are

A Different World....Lead In-The Cosby Show
Veronica's Closet....Lead In-Seinfeld
Coach...Lead In-Roseanne
Family Ties...Lead In-The Cosby Show
Jesse...Lead In-Friends
Grace Under Fire...Lead In-Home Improvement
Night Court...Lead In-Cheers

There's some inflating going on there considering Suddenly Susan, and the Naked truth BOTH aired in the time slot after Seinfeld during that season, as well as Fired Up and The Single Guy airing in the slot after Friends. Making it appear as if NBC had 6 hit sitcoms in the 10 ten when they really had 2 real hits and the other 4 benefitting from being in the slots at 8:30 and 9:30 on NBC Thursday night schedule. Funny too how NONE of those shows made it past their 2nd and/or 3rd seasons once they were moved to different time slots.

yeah for awhile it was a pretty sizeable hit, along with "Roseanne" and "Home Improvement" it was one of ABC's biggest shows for awhile, but then Brett Butler had some issues and the series started to suffer, and the ratings eventually fell before it was ultimately and disgracefully cancelled.

That's my show! I knew it was the lowest rated sitcom on NBC in it's third season. That's why I can't bash NBC too much. I mean they DID bring it back for a fourth season. Even if it's their fault for the low ratings, what with moving it around nine different times in it's four and a half years on the air.

23. Cybill CBS 10.2

34. Nanny CBS 9.1

isn't it weird how Cybill has higher ratings than both Murphy Browna nd The Nanny yet got cancelled before either one?

I was surprised to find out that with all the times NBC moved Newsradio, they never aired it on Thursdays. I think if they had put it there for maybe a couple of weeks, people would have watched it and it would have been a hit. They could have put it on at 9:30 pm right after Seinfeld. Would have done much better than the shows that aired in that timeslot during the time that Newsradio was on the air like Caroline in the City, Veronica's Closet and the Newsradio ripoff, Suddenly Susan.

now this is just a guess, but i think Newsradio was never going to be a hit for several reasons: #1) it wasn't really an accessiable show for most of "middle america" because it's humor was often dark and the tone often negative, and #2) Phil Hartman annoyed a lot of people...

plus i think it was more popular with males than females and at least imho at the time NBC was more concerned with female demographics for thursday nights.

just my opinion

I believe they aired a rerun of "Smoking" on a Thursday night. And then, I believe, though I might be wrong, they reran the "Bill Moves On" episode on a Thursday. But yeah, it should have been there instead of "Just Shoot Me." Paul Simms (the creator) even stated that he always wished NBC would put "NewsRadio" on Thursdays. Of course, it would have been well enough if it stayed on Tuesdays, but when they moved it to Sundays, it proved successful, so NBC decided to move it again to Wednesdays and that's when it sank. I don't know how much longer it would have lasted without Phil Hartman, but if the show was a hit, chances are there would have been more episodes in the seasons, so we could have had more episodes, total. Even if it did end with season five. We might have had exactly or a little OVER 100 episodes.

I always said NBC should have put Newsradio and 3rd Rock from the sun on Thursdays. They were real workhorse comedies for them. They were used to plug a hole in their schedule whenever. ..lol They sure would have been better than Single Guy and Veronica;'s Closet...two of the worst shows of all time.

"NewsRadio" doesn't seem like a mainstream sitcom. And that's exactly why I love it. It's not like the other bland sitcoms. However, I can see why the average viewer wouldn't watch it. I just find that sad. Because the show is really funny. It kind of reminds me of "Arrested Development." Both shows were critically acclaimed. Both networks kept the shows on longer than the ratings justified, meaning they tried, but the viewers just didn't come. And both shows are very funny.

And I understand it's your opinion, but who did Phil Hartman annoy?

There are a lot of news sites you can check out and they might have the weekly ratings in their archives, the only problem is you have to pay for that kind of information. I think some of the sites I've seen charge about $2.95 per article.

I've been interested in tv show ratings for a while now and lately I've been trying to find the weekly ratings from the '70's and I haven't found anything, but I won't pay $3 just to find out what the ratings were for one week. I'm still looking though and if I ever find any that don't cost money I'll post them.

I'm ashamed to say it, but I quit watching the show when it moved to Wednesdays. Of course I didn't have a Nielson Ratings Box, so it didn't count. I got back into the show after Hartman died. That's when it was syndicated and I got caught up with seasons 3 & 4, along with the fifth season in it's original broadcasts on NBC. I still have seasons one and two on tape from NBC.

BTW, I love your avatar. :) The Stooges Rule! Moe once said he wanted the Stooges to be around forever. Here it is 2007 and the Stooges are still here. I think they have a gread chance of lasting forever.

Thanks. :) I think you're right. Their brand of comedy is timeless. It's hard to believe they started making those shorts in 1934 and here in 2007 they are still big. It's to bad Curly and Shemp didn't live long enough to see how popular they really were.

USA Today always published the entire ratings but of course they didn't go back to the 70's. I started following the ratings in that paper beginning in 1984.

The earliest complete ratings lists from USA Today I have are from August of 1987. They had the best lists: rating/share and viewers. No households, though, but I have always preferred viewers. Anyway, I am more interested in the numbers (Nielsen or otherwise) from the 1960s and earlier. I do not have many of those.

Oh yeah, they even joked around on the audio commentary for Smoking about how it was the only episode people (non fans) seem to remember so that would make sense.

I was only able to find the complete list of ratings for the 1981-82 season

I guess that makes "Smoking" NewsRadio's Chocolate Factory episode, lol.

When Phil died, I hadn't watched the show in a while and I kept thinking back to his performance in "Smoking." Especially once I found out they were going to kill the character off. That was one of Bill's best episodes and it was so early in the run of the show.

They sure would have been better than Single Guy and Veronica;'s Closet...two of the worst shows of all time.

 The Single Guy was horrible. I used to watch it sometimes when it aired on USA. It came on right before Boston Common so I'd watch some of it, but I could never make it through an entire episode without changing the channel.

now this is just a guess, but i think Newsradio was never going to be a hit for several reasons: #1) it wasn't really an accessiable show for most of "middle america" because it's humor was often dark and the tone often negative, and #2) Phil Hartman annoyed a lot of people...

plus i think it was more popular with males than females and at least imho at the time NBC was more concerned with female demographics for thursday nights.

just my opinion

I agree, it wasn't your normal sitcom, but when you think about it, neither was Seinfeld and we all know how well that show did.

Phil Hartman?

You may be right about that. Shows like Caroline and Veronica's Closet don't really appeal to men, I don't think.

I actually watched that and Friends for a whole year. I can never get that year back. I switched over to Promised Land and Diagnosis Murder the following year and never returned to NBC's must see Thursday again except to watch an occasional Seinfeld episode.

I never saw Promised Land and I was never a fan of Diagnosis Murder, but I'd take those shows over Friends and Single Guy anyday.

It's nice to see a couple of my favorite shows on the top twenty list (Wings, Ellen). I know "NewsRadio" made it a couple of times before it's third season. I just can't seem to find that magazine anywhere.

Imagine how well it would have done had NBC kept it right where it was. They really did kill it. I'm mad at them for that, but at least they kept in on the air, giving us 97 episodes before the new President came in and gave it the axe. If I remember correctly, "NewsRadio" ended in 75th place. Which was still ahead of 3rd Rock and Suddenly Susan - two shows that came back the next season.

I think it's safe to say that it would have been a top 30 show, easily. I often wonder if any of these "Presidents" even like tv. It seems to me like they're all in it just to make some easy money. If a show doesn't get great ratings right away, they usually move it or take it off the air.

That's a shame. :( I mean I pretty much stopped watching 3rd Rock by that time and Suddenly Susan was garbage. puke:
