View Full Version : Is this happening to anyone else...new annoying phone calls
Ireneparalegal 08-18-2007, 03:03 PM Three times this has happened. It just happened this morning. I once received a phone call from Virgin Mobile saying (an automated call) "You are one month behind on your Virgin Mobile service. Please call our office to discuss this payment." Ok, I don't have a cell phone, and my family members in my home don't have Virgin Mobile. I thought it was a mistake and they meant to call another home. I dismissed it and just hung up without hearing the rest of the "tape".
Then the second time this call came in, I wasn't home and a voice mail message was left. This time I heard the whole thing and it went on and on abt what phones they have, blah blah blah, sounding more like an "ad" rather than a reminder to someone that they need to pay their phone bill.
Today I got that call again! Same exact words, same tape, etc. It sounds like Virgin Mobile is just doing random calling and this is the new way to "advertise". So friggin' annoying!!!!!!
Anyone else get these kinds of calls?
Max Whittaker 08-18-2007, 03:21 PM So... um.... Something really gets me...
Do these companies really, truly, seriously, honest to God expect to gain more customers/money by putting out such deceitful telemarketing calls???
Seriously?
Mikado 08-18-2007, 03:26 PM Man, that sounds borderline illegal...not to mention an insult to intelligence.
First they get you all worried , then they try to sell you something; thats really low......must be even worse if you actually DO have Virgin mobile!
Sounds like a good way to lose customers, not gain them!
Ireneparalegal 08-18-2007, 03:44 PM I know, I can imagine if someone does have Virgin Mobile and hears that. They may have paid their bill and yet, have to waste time to call the company, blah blah blah.
I agree, what kind of people want to deal with a company that has to resort to telemarketing tactics and plain lies?

Not me, I litterally refuse to give anyone who interupts my life, by calling me unsollicited, my business. As the old saying goes "Dont call me, ill call you!"
Ireneparalegal 08-18-2007, 08:46 PM I wish these people had the "b*lls" to actually call me live, so that I can tell them what to do with their intrusive phone calls. Getting angry at a tape recorded call is moot.

It doesn't do a whole lot of good to yell at the telemarketer, either. They're only doing their job as best they can(Granted, I'd have to be pretty desperate to even consider such a job).
I'm just glad I don't have Virgin Mobile anymore. I didn't have any problems with them, but still. This tactic is pathetic!
dawsongirl 08-19-2007, 12:20 AM That's ******** anyway, because Virgin Mobile is a pay-as-you-go service. There is no bill. But not everyone is gonna know that. What a deceitful way to sell phones.
catlover79 08-19-2007, 12:28 AM That's the beauty of caller ID. If I don't recognize the name/number, I just won't answer the phone. If it's really important, I'll wait to see if they leave a message. Nine out of ten times they don't leave a message.
The way I see it - these jokers may try to get around all the do not call lists they can, but they can't get me to answer the phone. SO THERE, all you annoying telemarketers/phone solicitors!!

I do the same thing. My parents answer them regardless for some reason, but no way in hell I do. Or I answer and hang up on them just to get the phone to stop ringing.
Ireneparalegal 08-19-2007, 12:39 AM I do have caller ID. And when they called this morning, my boyfriend picked it up. He picks it up REGARDLESS. I tell him if it says UNKNOWN CALLER, don't pick it up. He refuses. So, that is how that stupid call came abt this morning.

 When we first got caller ID, my parents used to pick up "Unknown Caller" calls for a long time even after I told them not to. Eventually, they got the hint. None of us answers if it's "Unknown Caller".

You answer the phone and then hang up, Cathy? I love it.

Yeah. I press talk, then immediately press end.

Me and my girls do that. But my boyfriend wants to "argue" with whoever is calling UNKNOWN.
Nighthawk76 08-19-2007, 12:51 AM Yeah. I press talk, then immediately press end.

That's what I said!!! I was telling my boyfriend, how stupid are they?
Ireneparalegal 08-19-2007, 01:13 AM I sometimes hang up too. From time to time I get several collect calls in a row from an inmate at a jail. Immates sit there and dial number after number until they get someone who is willing to accept the charges. I don't have caller id so there's no way for me to know who is calling ahead of time. I guess that's just as well because even if I had it I wouldn't be able to see the small print that displays the name and phone number of the person calling. It's so annoying when I get those calls.
And what on earth do these inmates expect to have happen once someone accepts these calls? Phone sex?????
Mikado 08-19-2007, 01:27 AM or just lonely? @_@

I have Virgin Mobile, and I have only gotten two calls from them in the 2-3 years that I've been a customer. One was to give me a promotion code for extra minutes, and the other was, like you said, to say that I hadn't paid my "bill." That is stupid because as dawsongirl said, VM is a pay-as-you-go service and there is no bill. So I just ignored that phone call.
I didn't know they were calling/harrasing people who aren't even customers!
My mom got a VM phone when I did, and after about a year, she no longer wanted their service, so she quit adding money to her account. VM kept calling and playing this stupid "tape" saying "You haven't added money to your account. If you don't do so within 90 days, you will lose your phone number."
These calls went on for MONTHS!! Even after she would have suppposedly lost her phone number. They are liars!

Liars they are!!!!!!!!!!!
When I see the UNKNOWN CALLER appear on my caller ID, sometimes I too will do the TALK and then hit END just so I don't have to hear the phone ring.
sweetdiggity 08-19-2007, 02:52 PM At my aunt's old job, when she would call me my caller ID would say "unknown caller" and I would always pick up and then hang up on her because I didn't know it was her.
It should have said the name of her company, not unknown caller.

You know, my best friend works for the county and when she calls it says UNKNOWN, so I have to wait and see if she leaves me a message. I will then return her call on her cell phone.
Chocoholic 08-20-2007, 10:00 AM That is annoying. I don't see how they can get more business doing that.
Penny Lane 08-22-2007, 10:09 AM I signed up on the No Call list. I don't get any telemarketing calls!:happyface

I did that a long time ago. But there are those calls that are automatically generated that still get through, no matter what. Also, calls abt charities or fundraisers are allowed through and there are a few other exceptions.

You really need to be careful about those calls because they could be scammers. It happened to my mom and other people I know. I never donate to charities over the phone. It really sickens me that these soulless people think nothing of taking advantage of others.
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2007, 02:53 PM Well, that is why I have caller ID. But when no one is home, they will leave a voicemail message. That is annoying as well because until you check the voicemail messages, you have no idea who left you the message. I can scroll the caller id list of numbers of the people who called while I was out, but if it says UNKNOWN, it might be my friend who works for the county, leaving me a message or it might be a charitable organization.
The worst ones are when it is campaign time and I get recorded calls from the different candidates. I remember when I got one from Arnold Schwarzenegger.
