View Full Version : I heard "Once You Get Started" by Chaka Khan on the radio......
craftman 08-14-2007, 07:54 PM and immediately thought about the power going out in the Evans apartment.:)
Anybody else ever hear a song that reminds them of a scene from Good Times?
catlover79 08-14-2007, 11:47 PM Now whenever I hear the Jacksons' "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", I think of Willona's disasterous party that ended in the return of Penny's birth mother. I'm sure that was intentional, as their sister Janet was a cast member at that time.
Whenever I hear "Pick Up the Pieces" by Average White Band these days, I always see pregnant Henrietta dancing to the record in Thelma's room. The episode you mentioned - was that when Flo won the record player and every time they used it, the power went off? Which season did that air?
Ireneparalegal 08-15-2007, 12:29 AM I think that was season two Monika.
For me, anytime I hear Brass Construction's "Movin" I can't help but see that scene in my head of Florida reading that damn telegram telling her that James was killed. It never fails, that moment is burned in my memory.

Yeah, that Brass Construction song, when I hear that, it gives me a weird feeling cause that happy disco music is playing in the background while Florida is reading the terrible news.

Yeah, that's the episode with the record player.
That's funny about Henrietta, I hadn't thought about that one.
When I hear "Native New Yorker" by Odyssey, I see Thelma doing that modern dance at the talent show.

It's true - you really do learn something new every day!! :D
craftman 08-16-2007, 09:06 PM I learned something new because I didn't even know that was chaka khan song
Well, officially Rufus and Chaka Khan.
Ireneparalegal 08-17-2007, 08:39 PM Yeah, that's the episode with the record player.

Same here. I wasn't a big fan of the song when it was released, but when I do hear it, I think of Thelma doing the dance.

Ditto here.
Ireneparalegal 08-20-2007, 01:31 AM Let me add, I also think of the Rent Party episode when I hear the Supremes song STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE. I always see the ladies in my head singing that song. And of course, Florida's wig...

Oh my God , I forgot about that one! When I hear the Supremes, I always sing that part like Florida, all late and off beat with a deep voice.
catlover79 08-20-2007, 08:08 AM How about The Pointless Sisters with their rendition of "Steam Heat"??
Ireneparalegal 08-20-2007, 05:00 PM Oh my God , I forgot about that one! When I hear the Supremes, I always sing that part like Florida, all late and off beat with a deep voice.
Stop! in the name of love
Before you break my heart
Stop! in the name of love
Before you break my heart
Think it over
Think it over
I've tried so hard, hard to be patient
Hoping you'd stop this infatuation
But each time you are together
Im so afraid of losing you forever
:D
craftman 08-20-2007, 06:14 PM How about The Pointless Sisters with their rendition of "Steam Heat"??
I never heard this song before they sang it on Good Times and never heard it nowhere after I saw it on Good Times. When they sang it I was like, "What kinda song is this? Is this a real song, this is crazy!
craftman 08-20-2007, 06:24 PM Does anybody know the name of the song that Thelma was suppose to be teaching JJ how to dance on in the episode "The Check-up"? It sounds like Parliment Funkadelic, but I'm not sure.

I have to say the same thing. I never heard of this song before. And like you said, I have never heard of this song since I heard it on GT. I was like, "WTF?"
So here is some quick info on that song:
"Steam Heat" is a popular song written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The song was published in 1954.
The best-known recording was done by Patti Page. It was released by Mercury Records as catalog number 70380, and first entered the Billboard chart on May 26,1954, lasting 9 weeks and peaking at #8.
The song was first introduced in the musical, The Pajama Game. It was later used as part of the Tony Award winning musical Fosse.

Thanks for that info, Irene. I guess it was a song more for a musical than for radio play.

Got that right.
I never liked the girls singing that song in that episode. I could do without that kind of song. It so reminds me of maybe the Huxtables doing something like that.
catlover79 09-01-2007, 12:32 AM Speaking of "Steam Heat", I have the POINTER Sisters' version on one of their greatest hits CDs. This is when the group was still mainly a novelty/nostalgia act - way before songs like "Fire" and "Slow Hand" rocketed them to mainstream fame.
Ireneparalegal 09-01-2007, 12:48 AM Gotta love the Pointer Sisters. Do you like their version?
catlover79 09-01-2007, 12:51 AM Yes - it's a lot of fun. The gals on Good Times basically just sang the choruses, but the Pointers did all the verses and it sounds great! :D
Ireneparalegal 09-01-2007, 12:54 AM I guess I need to hear that version because really, the ladies on Good Times just ruined it for me.
catlover79 09-01-2007, 01:07 AM It's well worth a listen, Irene. The CD I have it on is called Yes We Can Can: The Best of the Blue Thumb Recordings. I believe these are all album length and not single length cuts. How Long runs almost 8 minutes! The whole CD is very enjoyable. Here is a track listing:
Yes We Can Can
Wang Dang Doodle
Fairytale
Going Down Slowly
How Long (Betcha' Gotta Chick On The Side)
You Gotta Believe
Cloudburst
Jada
Black Coffee
Steam Heat
Salt Peanuts
Having A Party
Love In Them There Hills
Don't It Drive You Crazy
Ireneparalegal 09-22-2007, 07:19 PM Let me add, although this song was NEVER feature on GT, I can't help but think of Thelma when I hear it:
Bernadette by The Four Tops.
Bernadette Stanis, get it? I swear, ever since I can recall, I hear that song and it makes me think of her. I think it has to do with the fact that I always loved that for a girl's name. Also, when I would hear that song (back in the day) I never knew of a female that had that name other than Ms. Stanis. Let me say, I loved the name so much that when I made my Confirmation and we had to choose a saint as our saint name, I chose the name Bernadette. Not because of Ms. Stanis though.
catlover79 09-23-2007, 11:11 AM Hey Irene, have you listened to the Pointer Sisters' version of "Steam Heat" yet? I think you'd like it.
