He never hit his family - in fact, he adored his wife and kids and only wanted the best for them. James - and his portrayer, John Amos - ROCKS. I discovered Good Times in my freshman year of highschool which was 89. Before that, I never saw the show in syndication and was too young to remember it on CBSlike I did the Jeffersons.
