View Full Version : Should a Pregnancy be Written into a Season Finale or a Series Finale?
TVFactFan 08-07-2007, 11:09 AM There have been some shows who included a pregnancy into the FINAL SCRIPT which I felt was odd because if the show is ending why have a pregnamcy in the final show? That kind of leaves a open hole in the series that will never be filled. So do you think it's better for a pregnancy to be in the SEASON FINALE which of course would set up the Following season.
Shows that have included a pregnancy in the LAST episode were Good Times and A Different World

I knew when I read this, you were automatically talking about A Different World and Good Times. Anyways, I think there are 2 possiblilities to that. Either they thought they were getting picked up for another season (why?) or they want to leave an open gap in the seies, for us as the viewers to use our imaginations. THey did that kind of with The Wonder Years finale, too, and I know theyintended for us to use our imaginations to wonder what would happen next.

A Pregnancy was in the WY finale?
Zoneboy 08-07-2007, 11:20 AM Let's ask the Duggars. ;)

No, but they left a gap in the show, for us as the viewers to fill in ourselves.
sunshinefizzy 08-07-2007, 12:44 PM Pregnancy no, but I think a birth is a sweet way to go.

Birth would make more sense to be in the first ep of the last season
Scoobiedoo30 08-07-2007, 03:09 PM I think there it should be written into The Season Finale

or maybe they want to do that in case the series ever has a reunion.
waichingliu81 08-07-2007, 04:36 PM i'd prefer it as a series finale, as it would be one way of bringing some closure to the show, although it very much depends on the characters who are involved. if one or both persons are involved and one of them is someone who is easily dislikable, then definitely not as a series finale but if the people involved in the pregnancy storyline are a couple we are fans of, then yes and that it should be written as a series finale to wrap up the programme

You don;t think Marriage is a better way to wrap up the show instead of a pregnancy?

Usually, series finales are either someone getting married, someone moving, or someone having a baby. There's not many out there other than those 3.

hmmm... it could be, i mean it could work: what with the pair getting married and later on having a child or two of their own. the reason why i suggested the series finale would work best is because if it happened this way, then the pair would be able to put all their past troubles and woes behind them afterwards and move on forward with their lives. and as a series finale, it means that once its done, we as the viewers wouldn't be left wondering whether the guy and the girl will ever get married and become a couple for good and have their own children

Well, perhaps, but its become a bit of a cliche...a pregnancy is a bit of a twist on that.....strangely, there was a time pregnancy was considered taboo on TV...Even Lucy couldnt say the words "Im pregnant" back in the 50s!
Now of course, it seems nearly every show not only has a pregnancy over its course, but, they insist on showing the natural childbirth delivery right on the show......WHICH I COULD DO WITHOUT, THANK YOU
Classicshowsgurl15 08-07-2007, 07:41 PM I think it should be in a Season Finale. Friends had someone find out they were pregnant in the Season 7 Finale.
I like how The Wonder Years ended. They told us what happened to each of them and they were kind of had to use our imaginations too.
I think it works better for the series finale, since a pregnancy often times changes the shows direction.
Kristen 08-07-2007, 10:59 PM I prefer a pregnancy in a season finale. Although on The Nanny, they did it in the series finale, and I liked that. The idea of C.C. and Niles as parents is prob. best left to your imagination! LOL Otherwise, if the prengnacy is announced in the series finale, you're always left to wonder, what ever happened to that kid? And you figure they'd have plenty of new stories to do the following season w/ the baby, if they continued on.

Actually, I'd have to disagree with you on The Nanny finale. I alwyas thought that was one of the worst finanles ever. You could tell the whole hour things were realy being rushed so that the show could end. And, while watchign it origanlly, I was confused the whole way, because they aired the series finale before they aired like 8 episodes of the season, due to low ratings.
DTF955 08-09-2007, 08:45 AM Personally, I love using my imagination, but I think pregnancy is too much of a loose end to do that with. It can work, but how the couple is going to handle parenting, etc. is just as relevant once the baby is born. yes, weddings and having a baby are cliche, but to me, they're a good cliche to have, because the whole idea of a series finale to me is to put closure on things. It's like saying, "this whole story arc was leading up to this one special moment."
IThe "Happy Days" one was a perfect example of what I like in a finale. It's as if the writers said, "We spent these 11 years telling you about how this wonderful family grew, how the Fonz mtured from a real rebel into an upstanding citizen and parent, how Joanie grew up and wound up marrying Chachi, etc., and now they can all live happily ever after." If it seems cliche, in my opinion it's only because it's just a cheaper imitation of that finale.
Pregnancy is good for the end of the next to last season or start of the last season. Although, you *could* have a 1 hour finale where there's a pregnancy at the end of the first part, then the second is "nine months later," but I suspect that would be har dto pull off. it might seem more feasible now because we're used to seeing months go by in the space of a day in syndication.
comedyfreak 08-09-2007, 09:34 AM It really doesn't matter to me, both ways can work imo. In the King Of Queens finale they adopt and Doug's wife has a baby then they show the babies abit older as the camera panned out.

I agree with you, it doesn't really matter. I think it depends on the writers and how they script the show. Frasier ended its 11 year run with a birth and it turned out great.

I guess it all depends on the directors and the show itself, there are some shows in which that would work but others I would never want to see the show end with a pregnancy.
