Here is mine:

Blondie
The B-52s
Duran Duran
Queen
A Flock of Seagulls

What is yours? It doesn't have to be remotely 80s...you could as far back as you could go. Just wish musician or bands do you think was responsible for creating the 80s sound in general?

One group that no one has mentioned that had a huge influence on the 80's sound was Def Leppard. The way they wove the hard rock guitar sound with the melodic sensibilities of soft rock was mirrored by so many other artists during the 1980's.

Yeah, but Bon Jovi was pretty much just a cross between the Def Leppard style of radio friendly hard rock with Bruce Springsteen like working class lyrics.

Alot of the successful 80's acts got their start in the 70's. Shonen Knife was never that popular in the U.S. but that's the way it is with some acts, Some countries embrace them and others don't. Shonen Knife was formed in 1981 but were rarely played on MTV which may explain why.

I also forgot Hall & Oates!! :bonk: They first came to national attention in the mid-1970s, but they had a white hot streak going on in the 1980s. Almost every single they released from 1980-1984 went Top 10, and "Kiss On My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch" all hit #1 in that era. "I Can't Go For That" has been sampled in quite a few songs in recent years, including Simply Red's "Sunrise".

In August 2002, I saw H&O in concert in Cleveland with Todd Rundgren. It was an awesome show, and H&O are still recording and touring today. Their songs still hold up now.

Hall & Oates do have a lot of good songs. I especially like "Out Of Touch" and "Private Eyes". One of these days I'll have to get a greatest hits CD by them. I do have an 80's Hits CD that has "Out Of Touch" on it. The video for that song is really good too.

If you ever do buy a H&O compilation, Mike, I highly recommend The Essential Hall & Oates. It's 37 songs, 2 CDs, all of the hits, and some of the more obscure tunes. Here's the track list:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kbfyxqusldje

The first song they did in the show was "Adult Education" and then they swung right into "Out of Touch". That too is my fave Hall & Oates song and sounds even MORE awesome live! They closed out their set with "Maneater" and the encore set was "Wait For Me", "Kiss on My List" and "Rich Girl".

Thanks for the heads up, Monika. :) Next time I'm at Best Buy I'll probably pick it up. I like Essential CDs because there is always a lot of songs on them. :)

The Essentials are very good compilations, and so is the Gold series. I think I have about 7 or 8 of the Gold compilations in my collection. :D

He's known for more than that. :) Which 2 do you speak of? My guess would be "Addicted to Love" & "Bad Case of Loving You". However, Every Kinda People is probably his best solo effort IMO.

Such a sad loss, indeed. He was only 56 when he passed away. That's not old at all......the voice says it all. I especially liked all of his songs, including the popular ones, too. BTW, my name is also Robert, too.
