View Full Version : Why do people hate Rebecca?
Scouse 06-24-2007, 11:00 AM Why do people on here seem to hate Rebecca so much? As far as I'm concerned if Shelly had stayed on the show it would have only lasted 1 maybe 2 more seasons. They couldn't have maintained it and it would have become boring. Kirstie Alley breathed new life into Cheers. As much as I loved Diane back then, when I watch re-runs I get annoyed by her. The Rebecca years where far better, as it wasn't just based around 2 characters anymore. I always thought that her and Sam were more suited to eachother anyway and would have enjoyed it if they had ended up together. But please give Kirstie a break as Cheers would have ended years earlier if it not for her.
Brian Damage 06-24-2007, 11:15 AM I agree with you that Alley breathed new life into the show. I think some fans just resent that she replaced Diane and it ended the Sam/ Diane romance.
Mr. Television 06-24-2007, 12:17 PM Rebecca was a lot better than Diane and improved the show greatly. I always found Diane a little anoying.
snl 70s show fan 06-24-2007, 01:12 PM Rebecca was a lot better than Diane and improved the show greatly. I always found Diane a little anoying. :lol:i agree 100 percent
Mikado 06-24-2007, 04:47 PM The Rebecca character seemed to lack real focus ( Of course, that was the writers fault, not Kirsties ) Was she Sams new romance? Was she a golddiging slut? Was she a woman for whom her career was uppermost in her life? The answer was always cloudy and even more so with the "Sam And Becky try to have a baby" story loop. I totally dissagree that Back seat Becky refreshed the show, basically, when Diane left, the show lost its heart, and Sam regressed into a worst dog then before and a moral bankrupt. I loved Cheers from show 1 to the end but, the post Shelly Long years will never be as good as the first 5 , to me.
samanddiane4eva 06-24-2007, 05:46 PM I don't hate Rebecca. I'm just not fond of the whiny Rebecca. I like episodes in the Rebecca years but too much Rebecca is a bad thing to me. I can watch her be whiny but that gets annoying after awhile. Much like how Diane is somewhat annoying in some episodes in the first half of season 5.
I don't hate Rebecca, I thought she was alot funnier than Diane.
BensonFan 06-30-2007, 12:15 AM I really ended up liking Rebecca a lot when initially I didn't care much for her character on the show. It's pretty funny the way they broke her down from her first day at the bar, portraying herself as this uppity snobbish strong-willed woman to just being another one of the "regulars" who really was insecure, lonely, and a little neurotic at times. When this side of her came out, it made for some of the funniest scenes; her trying to seduce Sam at her apartment when she was rejected by Evan Drake, her telling the story of how she lost out on her dream job because she got so nervous she blew the interview (and passed this on to Norm..lol), how she got drunk at the Gaines' and made an ass of herself. I personally liked the contrast between her role and that of Diane, and I agree that her arrival brought new life to the show.
SpunkiiMonkii7078 07-14-2007, 01:48 AM I'm not a fan of Rebecca, but without Kirstie coming and Shelley leaving the show wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. I love the character Diane and the whole Sam & Diane romance, and I prefer that to any Rebecca moment, but the Sam & Diane storyline wouldn't have lasted much longer after the fifth season.
The reason I don't like Rebecca is because she was very, very whiny and I never liked the idea of her and Sam together. I laughed at her occasionaly but it was because she just seemed to have the worst luck and acted like such a loser at times.

Some do, some don't.............read up! ;)

Not likely, they were both much too selfish to get along , neither would have been willing to cave in to the needs of the other. ( it would have been a constant tug of war ).....id have given it 6 months at best!

:yeahthat Well said!
TV DVD Fan 07-21-2007, 06:52 PM I don't hate Becky, but I do enjoy the warring couple of Sam and Diane more than the dynamics between Sam and Becky. Every week was the same thing with Rebecca... Sam trying to seduce her. At least with Diane there was always something Diane was trying to get Sam into doing something he didn't want to do. On a scale of 1 to 10, Diane was a 9 and Rebecca was a 7.

Megara 09-01-2007, 05:46 AM I don't Hate Becky at all. To me, Diane Was a lot better for Sam though. Shelly and Ted Auditioned togeather and I think they where a cute couple. :)
I think Why people dislike Becky, Is Becuase She was only interested in men who where able to help her career. She was quite intimadating too, though very funny. Personally, I like Diane Much better. If you notice, Before Diane came on the show Sam Was so much more of a jerk. Afterwards, he Relized other people mattered and I think That's why Rebecca Ends up liking him, But She's Much too controling for Her and Sam to really fall in love.
But I do Agree, (As Much As I wish that Shelly had stayed) Thet Rebecca Brought a new life to Cheers.:D

Probably The Best Idea. I got up at four Today, I just bought the Fourth Season and I have Been Up all night wanting to watch it.
By the way I just read your Post on Why People Hate Becky, Very well put., I must say. I always Did Like Diane Best, But Rebecca did Bring Out something New, Not Interly Great, But Something New Nonetheless.

Well, obviously Diane had to be replaced, but, im not sure the Rebecca character was the best choice. Personally, Id have liked to see a role reversal, that is to say, Rebecca should have been a girl with a huge thing for Sam, who strangely was turned OFF by her aggressiveness......it would have been fun watching Sam trying to push away the advances of a woman, for a change ( And his boss, to boot..opposite situation with Diane ), then eventually, they could have gotten together. Among other things, it would have spared us having to watch Sam degenerate into a creepy sex addict, the way he did!
Scoobiedoo30 09-01-2007, 04:23 PM Rebecca is a very nice lady

They should've done that instead! I totally agree with you about Sam degenerating. It was sad. The question is, if they had gone this route, would Kirstie Alley still play the boss? This is a great idea for a fanfic though.

Sure i think Kirstie could have played "my" take on Becky...of course, it would be a totally different character, and we never would have had to go through the pain of Robin Colcourt, either!
( The only GOOD thing about Robin Colcourt was that he indirrectly helped Sam to get his bar back )
Oh, and if you want to write that fan-fic, be my guest....just let me be the first to read it ;)

You know, I don't think that is the best idea. I liked the fact that she went for her other bosses, like Evan, I enjoyed those episodes. I think they did a good job on Rebecca, her personality I mean, But I think she shouldn't have been so manipulative. But out of that Did comy jokes. I thought her to be funny, . It's hard to explane, I liked her, but at the same time, I hated her, probably because She replaced on of my favorit characters.
Baybe, I think, THat I like her as a character, Just NOT playing the role of Rebecca Howe...

I totally agree.
I had no problem with rebeca becoming whiney... ok its a little weird watching an ep from the last few seasons then watching one from s6, to see how much the character has changed. But she was always funny, whether winey or not.
I didn't much care for diane because the first few years were like the sam & diane show, every other ep ended with a 10 minute conversation between just the 2 of them, after a while it got boring. Whereas the rebecca years were more of an ensemble than before, and I love an ensemble. :)
I hated the fact that the last episode was diane centric, rebecca had been on the show longer and I wanted her and sam to get together, but instead she was pushed to the background just so they could do one more sam & diane story that they've done a hundred times before.

Aww! I thought The Sam And Diane Last episode CUTE! She was a guest, and hadn't been on the show forever, she deserved the stoplight.

Maybe It's Just me.. And I can't BELIVE I think This... But If Diane Had stayed and Ended up with Sam, It wouldn't have bothered me If they only had One or Two more seasons after the 5th Season...
Whazzup2007! 10-13-2007, 05:19 AM Diane and Rebecca are not bad is just that people consider Diane is better than Becky. I think if Shelly wouldve stayed on up to season 10 with Kristie, it would be more funny cuz Diane can have more feuds with not only with Carla but with Becky, Lilith, and Kelly. A MAJOR CATFIGHT!!!

Shelly Long left due to the fact that a co-worker found her arrogant. :S I wonder who it was. And she also want to spend more time with her two-year-old daughter.
But the point is that Becky would never have come into cheers if Shelly Long hadn't left. They would have never been featured in the same show.

Agree with everything above. Kirstie as Rebecca made Cheers "fresh" for a lot of different reasons. She was the polar opposite of Diane in every way; while Diane was a pretentious pseudo-intellectual, Rebecca started out as a career businesswoman who, at least initially, was hard-edged.
Though Rebecca changed throughout the series, I still prefer her character (in any season) to Diane's - who I just found annoying. In many ways, I find Rebecca endearing, even when she's acting like a typical gold digger - i.e., the episodes where she only wants to marry Robin C. for his money - LOL.
