It was all that greasy, artery-clogging pork that Florida cooked for him. Chit'lins AND pork chops all in one meal? :eek4: That was a heart attack just waiting to happen.

Not only that, at the end of that hypertension episode, the doctor told him his cholesterol was a little high. That's just as bad as hypertension. They were so worried about hypertension, they overlooked cholesterol.

He probably wanted Florida to substitute cottage cheese in place of hamhocks or chitlins. Besides, I don't think there was much pork chops and other meats in the diet since they always complained of high meat costs.

Meat is still high today, yesterday I bought porkchops and they were $8.25 and some ground turkey for $6. So not much has changed in 30 years lol.

Yep, so true.

Also, all that nagging, hollering and all the mental stress wasn't good for James. Whether he was on the receiving end or not.

The doctor said just don't work too hard and those headaches will disappear. What kind of advice is that to give to a man who is trying to survive in the ghetto?????

Sure James could have alleviated the hard work, but he would have headaches from worrying abt paying the rent.

You are missing the point, it's not about the price of Pork Chops, at the end of the day it would still be more expensive for a family situated like the Evans to maintain a healthy lifestyle because healthy food costs a lot more money

OK I get that. But they did buy pork chops, roasts, chitlins, and ground round (not ground beef). If I'm not mistaken, those cuts of meat are expensive where I shop.

They didn't eat pork chops often and they didn't eat chitterling often. But the did eat Ham Hocks and Fatback two of the cheapest meats that you can find. And Flo bought what she could in the Super Market, It's been stated that their Super Market didn't have the best of meat.

I remember my Grandma telling me that when she was little that they were so poor that her family had to eat by age group. So all of the youngest kids ate first then middle then oldest then her parents would eat.

So when you don't have that much money, you have to work with what you have and what you can afford.

But I think in seasons 2 and 3 they ate mostly chicken it seems to me. So I don't really see why James Cholesterol would be so high.

That has been said so many times. I can agree with your statement to a point. I have seen documentaries where people in the poor neighborhoods are interviewed and they all say the same thing, it is too expensive to eat healthy. They rely on mac and cheese boxes, top ramen noodles, beans and other inexpensive items, potatos, food items that can spread out during the week. I am sure if one shops and really looks at "healthy food" items, it can be done, but I find it can be a tad more expensive...and I am NOT POOR. So I can only imagine what poor people go through. Even fruit is expensive at times and that is healthy food right there.:(

Well, At the end of the day Florida was cooking to feed her family so that they wouldn't go to bed hungry. In one episode James even stated that they have gone to bed hungry. That's the worst feeling I think, not be able to feed your family. So they did the best that they could with what they had and with what they had to work with.

I can eat oatmeal, but that is a rarity for me. I hate Cream of Wheat. Michael mentioned Cream of Wheat ONCE, but I never seen them eat it or even reference that they ate it.

I guess Florida felt that a meal wasn't "wholesome" unless there was a variety of things to eat. Rice, beans and greens is three different things to eat at one sitting as opposed to just noodles.
