'GREY'S Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes says the firing of Isaiah Washington was in line with the show's storyline.
"I don't want to read the tabloids," Rhimes told "Access Hollywood." "And I feel like we wrote the show in a way that really completes the story of [Washington's character] Burke.
"And that is a really strong thing."
Washington, who played surgeon Preston Burke, was canned after a stormy season on the show, in which he used a gay slur to refer to co-star T.R. Knight - who then "came out." Burke ended the season leaving fiancee Christina (Sandra Oh) at the altar and disappearing.
