LOS ANGELES - Bob Barker endorsed his friend Rosie O'Donnell as a possible successor on "The Price Is Right," although the newly retired host isn't sure CBS wants a woman to take over the game show.

"I believe they're going to have a meeting with Rosie," Barker said backstage Friday night at the Daytime Emmy Awards, where he won his 19th trophy.

"She knows the show," he said. "There's no doubt in my mind she could do the show. Now, whether they want a lady host, I don't know. I've never heard that discussed. As far as I know, they've only auditioned men."

Barker said his friendship with O'Donnell goes back several years, when she had him as a guest on her old daytime talk show.

"She told me she loved `The Price Is Right' and wanted to host it one day," he recalled.

Among those mentioned as possible replacement hosts have been Todd Newton of the E! network, Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight," George Hamilton and John O'Hurley.

Barker retired last week at age 83 after 35 years of giving away vacations and cars on the hit CBS game show. But he said he may be back with some specials featuring vintage clips and guests.

"If it works out, I'd like to do that," he said.

That's very unlikely to happen. Generally, there's nothing wrong with a woman hosting a game show(ask Meredith Viera and Betty White), but Rosie O'Donnell hosting The Price is Right? I don't see that happening-she's not only too much of a loose cannon, but she isn't game show hosting material. George Hamilton isn't game show hosting material, either, John O'Hurley will be too busy hosting Family Feud and Mark Steines is a good enough anchorman on ET, but he lacks game show hosting experience. It has to be Todd Newton-he's available to take the reigns of hosting The Price is Right, he has the most experience with the show, especially with hosting TPIR Live in Las Vegas and he's also attended tapings and taken notes on the show. Todd Newton succeeding Bob Barker as host of TPIR makes a lot of sense-he's the most qualified to take the reigns and he knows how to do the show. Fremantle and CBS need to fully understand if they're looking for Bob Barker's most qualified successor, it's Todd Newton. I definitely wouldn't at all mind Rich Fields announcing for Todd Newton on The Price is Right, next season. After all, Todd hosting TPIR Live should account for something.

Well there goes about 50% of the loyal audience if she comes... Just no.

If CBS/Freemantle is even considering her, then I'm really concerned, because it must mean the other candidates weren't that good. ohno: Are they really that stupid that they haven't been planning for Bob's retirement for YEARS?

Speaking of Dave Price, with Alex Trebek now contemplating retirement as host of Jeopardy, he could be considered to succeed Alex. Alex actually said recently after Bob Barker's retirement as host of The Price is Right, he might consider retirement, himself. Well, Alex has hosted Jeopardy for 23 years, so I think in case he does announce his own retirement, Dave Price should be in the mix for Alex's possible successors. Don't worry about Pat Sajak-he's not going anywhere. He continues to do a good enough job, hosting Wheel of Fortune.

Relax, Cat! Rosie O'Donnell isn't game show hosting material. Fremantle and CBS would be wise to avoid Rosie as Bob Barker's successor. Yes, Bob was due to eventually retire, but as far as his successor is concerned, see posting no. 2-it explains why Todd Newton is the most qualified candidate to succeed Bob Barker as host of The Price is Right. Rosie is too much of a loose cannon and she would be highly undependable to be a TV game show host. Besides that, she has no game show hosting experience. Others will probably disagree with me, but TPIR is ready for Todd Newton to take the reigns as host.

Hopefully soon, and hopefully, for the sake of TPIR fans, Fremantle and CBS will select Todd Newton as Bob Barker's successor.

No offense to Rosie, but CBS should end the show, because no one can replace Bob Barker. For heavens sakes he was on that show for 35 years. I remember when the show first started. Bob Barker is a national icon.

Before that he did another show "Truth or Consequences" for 15 years. No one was able to replace him on that show either.

Most people tune into the The Price is Right, because of Bob Barker.

No one can replace Bob Barker, but why try, anyway! There's a difference between replacing someone and succeeding them. Bob will never be replaced, not by anyone, but he will be succeeded. He did say on E! News Daily that he would like his successor to make TPIR his own show and host the show his way. A replacement would attempt to copycat him, but a successor would make the show all his own and host the show, his way and not copycat Bob. The Price is Right will go on, but expect Bob's successor to make the show his own, be himself and host the show, his way-no copycats. I hope you understand the difference between replacement and succession in the game show industry.

I predict that The Price is Right will not survive without Bob Barker. I will give it a year or maybe 2 and then the show will be canceled due to low ratings. I believe that most people tuned in for Bob Barker, rather than for the show itself. But time will tell whether or not this show will survive

Sometimes when the universe closes a door, it opens up what's behind showcase No. 2!

Having recently flown from her perch on "The View," Rosie O'Donnell confirmed on her personal blog that she is probably meeting with producers this week about the possibility of succeeding Bob Barker as host of CBS' franchise daytime game show "The Price Is Right."

Officials at CBS were unavailable for comment, but the network has struggled for months in trying to find a suitable replacement for the iconic Barker, who was the face of the hit morning show for 35 years. Barker's last original episode aired Friday.

O'Donnell has made no secret of her desire to take over the game show, but CBS' interest is apparently a new development. In earlier blog postings, O'Donnell had written that the network didn't "want me, boo hoo."

CBS has been auditioning possible replacements for several months. The three leading candidates up to now have been George Hamilton, the famously tan film and television star; Mark Steines, co-host of "Entertainment Tonight"; and Todd Newton, best known for E! Entertainment programs such as "Coming Attractions" but who also hosts a live version of "The Price Is Right" at Bally's in Las Vegas.

Even if eventually offered the job, it remains unclear whether O'Donnell would be willing to relocate to Los Angeles, where the show is taped. She currently lives outside New York with her partner and their four children. They also have a home in Miami.

Barker seemed to endorse O'Donnell over the weekend after collecting a 19th Daytime Emmy Award but wasn't sure CBS wanted a female host. In an interview earlier this year about his potential replacement, Barker said this:

"I always compare game show hosts to pies," he said. "Some people like lemon, some like chocolate, some like cherry. We're all different, and we work in different ways.

"But I would say it'd be better if they bring on someone who has had some experience. Otherwise, between knowing over 70 different games and keeping the audience enthusiastic for an hour, it could be just too overwhelming."

If Rosie O'Donnell takes the helm, the show is doomed. With Todd Newton at the helm, the show will likely continue for years to come. What do you think of the possibility of The Price is Right with Todd Newton as host and Rich Fields as announcer? I think this possibility can become reality.

I wouldn't pay attention to either this guy nor Solomon, because neither make any sense about anything-they'll deny it, but they like to stir things up, and that's really a waste of our time. CBS and Fremantle would be wise to pass on Rosie O'Donnell and give the reigns of hosting The Price is Right to Todd Newton. This makes a lot of sense. Some might say Rich Fields, but he does a good enough job on the show announcing.

Well, first when you said she would be perfect I was thinking you had some mental disorder but after the never fights I concluded that no mental disorder would be able to produce such an untrue statement therefore it is sarcasm.

Rosie -- Gimme Bob's Job Already!

It might be far from a sure thing, but Rosie O'Donnell seems like she's all ready to come on down and be the next host of "The Price is Right."

The former "View" flamethrower tells her fan-inquisitors at [URL="http://www.rosie.com/"]rosie.com (http://photos.tmz.com/galleries/rosie_gets_physical) that she's meeting with CBS this week to talk about "TPIR," and that she's all set to go if CBS asks her to take over the skinny mike from Bob Barker, who ended his 30-year run last Friday. "If they asked me, I sure would ... I LOVE THE PRICE IS RIGHT," she wrote. Barker endorsed Ro as his replacement over the weekend.

Of course, not everyone is thrilled about Rosie potentially plying players with Plinko. One reader wrote that a petition had already started for a "50-state sponsor boycott" should Rosie be chosen, to which O'Donnell spat back, "The only thing I want to gay up is you."

One thing everyone can take comfort in: Rosie says she'd keep Barker's signature sign-off about spaying and neutering.

Forget it, Janice, I agree with Seth! Rosie O'Donnell would just kill the show. To me, that's more than enough reason to hope CBS and Fremantle will be in mutual agreement to name Todd Newton as the next host of The Price is Right.

I watched the Price is Right religiously as a child and into adulthood. Days off from school and holidays from work were always highlighted by the fact that I could catch the Price is Right.

As a longtime fan, all I can say at this point is that if Rosie takes over the show, I'm done. With or without Bob's endorsement...what a terrible choice. I honestly cannot think of anyone I would rather see host the show less than Rosie. I'd like to see her simply fade away...

I will not watch one second of Rosie on TPIR... I am sorry, I consider myself a fan, I've watched on and off over the years, I was REALLY sad to see Bob retire, but if Rosie takes over the show is dead for me. I won't try it, I won't even think about checking it out. It'll ruin such a good thing that Bob did for 35 years.

In the words of some people over at golden-road.net... "over my dead body"
