View Full Version : Glasses - can't see anything
Corolla 06-15-2007, 03:04 PM Okay, I'm exaggerating here. I got glasses today, and they feel... weird. First of all, having something sitting there on your nose does get annoying and the shape of these... rectangle-ish, but they just don't look right to me. Let's just hope I can get those contacts in. Few questions:
1) How do you live with glasses on all the time???
2) I can't touch my eye... contacts are gonna be hard for me to use, right?
3) I see this annoying outline of my glasses everywhere I look. Does it ever go away?
Yeah, I've had them for about 15 minutes but those are my questions... any other info is appreciated, they are driving me insane.
PZelda 06-15-2007, 04:02 PM Hon, I've been wearing glasses since before you were born. I started wearing them 18 years ago, in 1989.
Yes, you'll eventually get used to having something on your nose and after a while, you won't notice the outline of your glasses (unless you got a pair with REALLY THICK AND FAT temples, like my mom did. lol Temples are the earpieces for your glasses, BTW).
I've had my glasses for so long, I'm at the point where I feel naked if I don't have my glasses on my nose.
I hold on to my previous pairs of glasses, should anything happen to my current glasses (as it did this morning - I laid on top of my glasses by accident and ****ed up the right temple, so now it's bent out of place). I find that it's hard to wear my old glasses, because they don't feel like how my current glasses do - so it takes forever to get used to them, haha. Fortunately, my last/current pair of glasses are plastic frames, so it wasn't too difficult to get used to wearing my old glasses again. It's the wire frames that I have an even harder time with - they usually have the adjustable plastic nosepiece thing, and I HATE THAT! I haven't had glasses with that since 2002, heh.
TripperFan 06-15-2007, 04:30 PM Yeah, you'll get used to them. As a matter of fact, when I first started wearing contacts I constantly kept wanting to push my "glasses" up still but they weren't there so I looked like a real geek periodically pushing my head between my eyes!
I was like you - couldn't put eyedrops in or go near my eye, but I did get contacts and again, you get used to handling them. Now I can dig around in my eye for an eyelash or anything else and it doesn't bother me a bit.
Five years ago though it got to the point where I couldn't handle soft contacts anymore (dry eye) and was so blind that even showering and shaving my legs was difficult. I had to get 2" from a magnified mirror to be able to put my makeup on. With severance pay I received I got laser eye surgery and it was fantastic. Didn't hurt a bit, had no bad effects and it was the best thing I've ever done. I had "supervision" afterwards and my night vision actually improved. I had been considered "legally blind" where you can only determine fuzzy shapes and colours.
I just recently though had to get glasses for distance only again. I can have more surgery free (there was a lifetime guarantee), but I'm not at that point yet - just on the edge. I got super lightweight rimless glasses and I'm adjusting to them again myself.
I'll give you a week and you'll be totally used to them. ;)
Zoneboy 06-15-2007, 05:39 PM I've been wearing glasses since I was 8 years old and I'm 42 now. I can't see worth a damn without them and the only time I take them off is when I'm asleep, taking a shower or cleaning them.
Jonathan 06-15-2007, 05:49 PM I got them first in 2005 - starting 8th grade. It took a long time to get use to them, but I sort of like them. I thought about getting contacts, but I sort of *like* glasses. I hope I can eventually have the lasik (sp?) surgery done someday.
Corolla 06-15-2007, 05:57 PM The last thing I'm doing is letting any sort of laser anywhere near my eye.
Courtnee 06-15-2007, 06:09 PM Glasses are the bomb diggity. They make you look all smart.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-15-2007, 07:49 PM Glasses are a pain in the ass. I could never go back to them after contacts...which are also a pain in the ass. I have no help for ya.

Two-way loss. Life sucks. :p
coffield3 06-15-2007, 08:32 PM I think glasses make people look sexy!! :D

I think they put you to sleep - it's supposedly painless.

freshprinceofLA 06-16-2007, 02:32 AM yea don't worry about em too much I got glasses too. I got those transtional ones that turn into sunglasses people say it looks cool on me at least. Glasses becomes a pain cause with out my glasses in class I can't see at all even if the teacher moves me to the front row so I can't forget em or i'm pretty much screwed
catlover79 06-16-2007, 10:41 AM I've been wearing glasses for almost 20 years now (I was 9 when I first got them, and am almost 28 now), so I also feel naked without them. You'll get used to them eventually. I've had the same frames since 2000 but if I ever replace them I'm thinking of getting the rimless kind.
My glasses prescription has been the same for 4 1/2 years, so I haven't had to change the lenses since then. I attribute that to wearing shades while I'm outside and/or driving. I found those little clippy sunglasses things at a kiosk in the mall and wear them over my frames. They've worked great, and feel much more comfortable.
EmoJoe 06-16-2007, 11:13 AM i got them when i was 7 and had them until i was 12, (i got contacts then) so thats like 1999-2004 or some crap like that. anyway, they are pretty annoying, not gonna lie...lol. but the whole "there's this weird outline outside of my eye!!" thing goes away quickly, later the annoying thing is just the lenses popping out and stuff -____-. i used to be obsessive-complusive about my glasses and always had to clean them. but yeah. contacts are annoying too. LAZOR EYE SURGERY FTW!
TripperFan 06-16-2007, 11:21 AM The last thing I'm doing is letting any sort of laser anywhere near my eye.
I was the same way. I've always said if I had to lose one or the other, I'd rather lose my arms than my eyesight but I did years of research (seriously - the first dr. I saw said to wait at least 6 years which I did). I found one of the best places in Canada (maybe N.America) to do it. I'd stay away from those "discount" places that give you a really cheap price. If it sounds too good to be true than it probably is.
I even got a video tape of my surgery which is cool to watch afterwards (you can't believe that was really done to you without any pain).
TripperFan 06-16-2007, 11:25 AM I think they put you to sleep - it's supposedly painless.
Nope - you're NOT asleep for it at all. They need you awake because you have to focus on a flashing light while they do the surgery. They give you a mild tranquilizer (Valium) before they measure your eyes for it. You do have to talk yourself into being relaxed though. I have to admit, I was super nervous the whole time but didn't feel a thing. Then they put drops in to freeze you. No pain or discomfort at all.
They send you home and tell you that at most, it might feel like you have an eyelash stuck in your eye but I didn't even get into any of that. They give you these funny plastic "bubble eyes" that stick onto your face for when you sleep for the first couple of nights so you don't rub your eyes in your sleep. You have to be very careful about that for 48 hrs. but after that, it's a breeze.

That's why I went back to plastic frames. :D
I had plastic frames from 1989 to 1995, wire frames from 1995 to 2002 and I've had plastic frames since then.
That was always the biggest problem I had with wire frames - the damn lens would fall out all the time. I've had two plastic frames since '02 and I have yet for one of my lens to fall out. :)

LOL, i only had wire frames. i think anyways.
catlover79 06-16-2007, 11:43 PM My worst glasses day - in 6th grade, I got smacked right in the face with a basketball in PE. My glasses broke and I had to get a new pair. To this day, I'm not big on basketball. :p

Did your parents sue the school for a new pair?
catlover79 06-16-2007, 11:56 PM Did your parents sue the school for a new pair?
 No, they didn't. It was really my own fault...I wasn't paying attention and the ball rebounded right off the rim and into my face. It wasn't fun but it did teach me to be aware when there are basketballs around.
I Love John Ritter 06-17-2007, 02:38 PM I got glasses when I was about 9 or 10 years old. I would never wear them though, so they were a complete waste. My vision wasn't that bad back then anyway, so I could survive without them. When I got older my vision got worse and worse so I ended up getting contacts. My vision is a mess now (I really can't see anything with glasses or contacts) but I still use contacts and I love them. I couldn't live without them. I can't see perfectly with my contacts because of my astigmatism but it's WAY better than nothing. I have a pair of glasses that I wear when I take my contacts out an hour or so before I go to sleep. I can see perfect with them but I just really hate wearing glasses. When I first got these glasses I felt like I had tunnel vision and I complained to my optometrist about it. He said that they were the right prescription for me but they were probably giving me tunnel vision because my prescription was so strong (even though they were the right prescription). He ended up lessening the power just a little and it worked great for me. Don't be afraid to try contacts. They're really great if you don't like glasses and you can't even feel them when you have them in. I can only tell they're in because I know I can't see a thing without them.

AllIWantIsYourClutch 06-18-2007, 10:21 PM I got glasses in 3rd grade and I hated them with a passion. I got contacts some time in middle school and they were basically the most amazing things ever. Then this year, I decided that my contacts were annoying me and when I had my yearly eye exam, I got new glasses, along with more contacts. I thought I would switch back and forth every few days, but I think I've worn my contacts maybe 4 times since I got new glasses. It's so much less of a hassle to wear glasses.
TripperFan 06-18-2007, 10:43 PM Do you close or keep your eyes open?
Ok - that was the worst part. They have to put restrainers to keep your eyelids spread wide open. It's like a scene out of A Clockwork Orange or something. You're not frozen at that point either so it's a little strange. They had a tough time holding my right eye open so had to do it twice which didn't help. Made my eyes water like crazy, but as soon as its on, they start putting the drops in to freeze you anyway.

Ouch!  ;)
Once in high school PM we were playing vollyball and I wasn't paying attention and a ball hit me right in the face. :o I payed attention after that.

Oh man, my sympathies. I went to a week-long summer camp the June before I started 8th grade (this was in '98), and the second day into camp, my glasses broke in half when I took them off to take a shower. Worst worst worst worst camp I ever went to. I was miserable the entire week. :(
(they were cheapo wire frames. See why I went back to plastic frames?)

Plus, the thought itself is just creepy unbearable. Knowing a laser was soon going to be shone on my eye and having to keep the eyelids open with restrainers... just...
So you actually see the laser coming towards your eye and you see it while they're doing it?

You got PMs in high school?

I meant PE. Sorry about that.
