View Full Version : Right now, which is worse... today's music or tv? waichingliu81 06-12-2007, 07:45 PM both are as bad as each other, i'd never thought that at this current period, most of today's music and tv shows- especially the sitcoms would be so crap. therefore, i cannot choose betwen either of them EmoJoe 06-12-2007, 07:46 PM music...i think TV is starting to go uphill again. at least now the most popular shows are dramas...scripted shows, over reality stuff. it's not as good as it was say, 10/20/30 years ago, but it seems to be getting back up there. music on the other hand...blech. if you dig past the rap and bubblegum crap you can find some good songs, and i think that along with TV, it was worse a couple of years ago and is slowly climbing uphill again, but for the most part, the most popular songs are all hip hop stuff which, to me, is nothing great for the most part. dlemond 06-12-2007, 07:48 PM Music catlover79 06-12-2007, 07:48 PM What a good question. I think both music and television is pretty bad these days. Movies aren't much better. The only "new" show that I watch is CSI. The only "new" music I like is in country music. Number 9 Dream 06-12-2007, 10:57 PM Definitely music...there are still a few good shows out there on t.v., but good music is harder to come by. Nighthawk76 06-12-2007, 11:03 PM Music. JoPol_wannabe 06-13-2007, 12:46 AM Music definently there are some country signers I do like and a couple rock singers but other then that today's music sucks I love to listen to music from the 70's and 80's well not to much disco. Tv today isn't to bad there are a few shows I like even though the really good family type shows are going out of style like now since 7th heaven and Gilmore Girls aren't on anymore most of those quirky fun shows are fading out. I do like Men in Trees, How I meant your mother, Til' Death and I love American Idol. But with channels like Ion, TV land and ABC family there's still classic shows that I love to watch. catlover79 06-13-2007, 12:52 AM All I can say is thank goodness more and more of the classic TV shows are available on DVD now. I check out as many as I can from the library. I'm so glad there is a market for them. waichingliu81 06-13-2007, 09:14 AM What a good question. From all the infomercials to the countless "reality" shows. There was a time when That's Incredible! and Real People was on, but they weren't 'reality' shows. I would love to go back to when we only had three channels and even if I woke up at 2 o'clock in the morning, I could still turn the tv on and know that it wouldn't be infomercial after informercial -that something was going to be on. Even though I haven't listened to Top 40 radio since I was in high school, today's music isn't all that bad. But I really miss the sounds I grew up with. I've seen many teenagers over at YouTube who watch videos from the 50s on up to the 80s - from country to Motown to disco, and just about every one of them has made a comment that today's music is 'crap' compared to what previous generations experienced. They talk about how they'd love to go back in time. I find that to be so refreshing. Whenever I check out the stuff I grew up seeing on MTV, it always makes me smile when I see someone who wasn't even around at the time it first aired, giving kudos to the group and the song. If I was a kid growing up today, I doubt I'd be interested in watching any tv. Thank God for TVDVDS! :D Just Shoot me and Scrubs are coming to tv land next year, I hate to think what sitcoms they'll air in 10 years if any at all. Nighthawk76 06-15-2007, 12:28 AM I don't even know if I've ever watched a full 3 hour lineup on any network. You guys were so lucky. :) I know that I didn't. Ahhhh, that'd make sense! Skywalker 06-15-2007, 12:30 AM OMG That was a great lineup too. :D But then they took The Incredible Hulk off and moved Dukes and Dallas up an hour to make room for Falcon Crest. There were so many good shows on opposite each other in the 70's that you couldn't watch everything you wanted to watch. And we didn't get a VCR until the early 80's so we couldn't record those shows. VCR's were so very expensive when they first came out. Skywalker 06-15-2007, 07:49 PM Now that's a wacky lineup. Crossover night would have been freakin awesome though.  A Hulk-Dallas crossover would have been awesome! "On tonight's episode of Dallas... the Hulk breaks Southfork." Not even J.R. and all of his henchmen would be able to stop the Hulk. I feel so sorry for the lil kidlets of today. :faint: Me too. They have to grow up with such great shows like Apprentice, AI and Survivor. puke: Thank God they never had any of that crap when I was a kid. Nighthawk76 06-15-2007, 10:35 PM Me too. They have to grow up with such great shows like Apprentice, AI and Survivor. puke: Thank God they never had any of that crap when I was a kid. Even though I have no interest in American Idol myself I actually think that it is a really great show for teenagers since it gives them exposure to new music. The viewers of that show got the chance to see Carrie Underwood, who I actually think is pretty good, before the rest of us did. Teens today have the opportunity to see new artisits on this show since MTV and VH1 really do not play music videos again. So in this way, I think that AI is a good idea. Mr. Television 06-15-2007, 11:02 PM Backstairs at the White House....sounds like it may have been real. But not "reality". Stupid that there's even a difference. That was a mini-series. It Chronicled the lives of a couple of white. house housekeepers from William Taft through Dwight Eisenhower . It was actually quite good. Mr. Television 06-15-2007, 11:08 PM  A Hulk-Dallas crossover would have been awesome! "On tonight's episode of Dallas... the Hulk breaks Southfork." Not even J.R. and all of his henchmen would be able to stop the Hulk. Me too. They have to grow up with such great shows like Apprentice, AI and Survivor. puke: Thank God they never had any of that crap when I was a kid. Or JR could give the Hulk dating tips. Skywalker 06-15-2007, 11:11 PM Or JR could give the Hulk dating tips.  J.R. could hook the Hulk up with one of his mistresses. Skywalker 06-15-2007, 11:16 PM Even though I have no interest in American Idol myself I actually think that it is a really great show for teenagers since it gives them exposure to new music. I guess you have a good point there. I can't even remember the last time I saw a music video on either of those channels. dandelion wine 06-15-2007, 11:19 PM Me too. But the prices they ask at ebay are ridiculous. I may be a fangirl, but I'm a cheap fangirl. lol They are ridiculous! I really wanna see it and yeah, if I could buy it, I would. But holy cow.. dandelion wine 06-15-2007, 11:20 PM Yeah, and I wish they'd get rid of it cause it's annoying. You're welcome. :) I wish they would, too. dandelion wine 06-15-2007, 11:22 PM  A Hulk-Dallas crossover would have been awesome! A Hulk-Dallas crossover would be primetime gold. dandelion wine 06-15-2007, 11:23 PM I feel so sorry for the lil kidlets of today. :faint: Me... too. Mr. Television 06-15-2007, 11:24 PM Even though I have no interest in American Idol myself I actually think that it is a really great show for teenagers since it gives them exposure to new music. I think I wouldn't mind it to bad if it didn't always pre-empt other shows I watch not to mention destroy other shows I like that run opposite it. Mr. Television 06-15-2007, 11:27 PM  J.R. could hook the Hulk up with one of his mistresses. Kristin would have been a great one. Dutabi84 06-15-2007, 11:47 PM TV is worse. Outside of ESPN, about 80% of TV is unwatchable. If you can eliminate a couple of genres of music (today's rap, all country), there is a lot of good music out there. Fleet 06-15-2007, 11:50 PM I wish we had that kind of selection of shows today on ABC, NBC and CBS. There were so many good shows on opposite each other in the 70's that you couldn't watch everything you wanted to watch. And we didn't get a VCR until the early 80's so we couldn't record those shows. VCR's were so very expensive when they first came out. Yeah, I remember. There were a lot of good shows on at the same time. That happened a lot in the '60s, too. The first VCR my family bought was around 1985, a Lloyd's for $300. dawsongirl 06-16-2007, 01:01 AM That was a mini-series. It Chronicled the lives of a couple of white. house housekeepers from William Taft through Dwight Eisenhower . It was actually quite good. Oh I see. Well so much for reality. dawsongirl 06-16-2007, 01:01 AM Or JR could give the Hulk dating tips. :rotflmao: Fanfic anyone? lol dawsongirl 06-16-2007, 01:03 AM  A Hulk-Dallas crossover would have been awesome! "On tonight's episode of Dallas... the Hulk breaks Southfork." Not even J.R. and all of his henchmen would be able to stop the Hulk. JR gets annoyed with McGee's persistant questions. However, with no henchmen left, McGee snoops around and finds much more than he bargained for. dawsongirl 06-16-2007, 01:06 AM Yeah, I remember. There were a lot of good shows on at the same time. That happened a lot in the '60s, too. The first VCR my family bought was around 1985, a Lloyd's for $300. Wow...our first VCR was like $1000. My parents made payments on it. Cactus Jack 06-16-2007, 01:08 AM Me... too. HEY those are the same kidlets that will be enjoying the very movie scripts I PM ya Scoobiedoo30 06-16-2007, 01:09 AM I dont know How Much Our VCR was I only only a kid waichingliu81 06-17-2007, 07:38 AM : Me too. They have to grow up with such great shows like Apprentice, AI and Survivor. puke: Thank God they never had any of that crap when I was a kid. today's TV blows Already Gone 06-17-2007, 10:48 AM With the exception of Family Guy and American Dad, I'd say TV today sucks. Mr. Television 06-17-2007, 10:56 AM I like today's drama shows. I think they are some of the best we've ever had. But their were good dramas in the 70's too and a lot more variety on what shows you could see. I can't believe how bad the sitcoms have gotten. dandelion wine 06-17-2007, 01:38 PM HEY those are the same kidlets that will be enjoying the very movie scripts I PM ya Thank God for that!! James 06-17-2007, 03:12 PM I'll say today's TV is worse than today's music. Of course, the organizations of which I am a member (Parents Television Council, American Family Association, etc.) chronicle television much more than music. At least with music, there are lots of broadcast (free, not HD or cable) radio stations that play music from the 1960s on. It's not like that at all with broadcast television, with the exception of ION (formerly "i" ... and PAX). Unfortunately nostalgia radio is becoming rarer; the one station I have ever managed to tune in at my residence (WMRI 860) is from all the way in Marion, Indiana, about 70 miles north-northeast of Indianapolis. It comes in clearer than stations in Van Wert (along US 30--and the Lincoln Highway, for that matter--between Fort Wayne, IN, and Lima) and Columbus. Last night I was listening to "Rock and Roll's Greatest Hits" with Dick Bartley (a syndicated oldies show), and guess what he played! "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys! Sure, the Beach Boys are popular when it comes to oldies, but that song came out in 1988, which is hardly considered oldies territory! dawsongirl 06-18-2007, 12:36 AM Last night I was listening to "Rock and Roll's Greatest Hits" with Dick Bartley (a syndicated oldies show), and guess what he played! "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys! Sure, the Beach Boys are popular when it comes to oldies, but that song came out in 1988, which is hardly considered oldies territory! That's a sign of the apocalypse right there. Scoobiedoo30 06-18-2007, 02:14 PM you can say that again Crimson and Clover 06-18-2007, 02:16 PM well i dont listen to the radio so i dont hear the new music and you cant get a signal where we live unless you have cable which we dont. so i wouldnt know. Mikado 06-18-2007, 02:25 PM Well, as bad as both TV and today's music are, id have to say the music is worse, because, TV is well redeemed by TLC, History, PBS and any other station that carries documentaries ( My fave type of programming ), which are better today than theyve EVER been! ( The ONLY modern music i listen to is J-pop/punk; particualrly Shonen Knife; otherwise, give me the music from the 30's to the early 60s, anything after that, i can do without! ) ps. Since this is a "sitcoms" site, Ill add that CORNER GAS is the only NEW sitcom I love.....or even like! EmoJoe 06-18-2007, 03:11 PM good lord people here are negative. most of the "kidlets" today enjoy the TV/music out there, and really, who else is it aimed for? im sure that a lot of you have barely even seen most of what TV and Music do have to offer. yeah, reality shows suck, but there's still a lot of good stuff if you dig past that. sitcoms may not be what they used to be but there's still a couple of good ones and there IS life outside of the sitcom. music is the same - rap sucks and songs like "Girlfriend", "Umbrellas"..., but if you dig past that it's not all that bad. even still, music and TV (especially music) is mainly aimed at kids who (for the most part) don't see a big problem. im sure the adults of the 70s and 80s werent too thrilled with music at the time either. waichingliu81 06-18-2007, 03:17 PM good lord people here are negative. most of the "kidlets" today enjoy the TV/music out there, and really, who else is it aimed for? im sure that a lot of you have barely even seen most of what TV and Music do have to offer. yeah, reality shows suck, but there's still a lot of good stuff if you dig past that. sitcoms may not be what they used to be but there's still a couple of good ones and a lot of good shows from other genres. music is the same - rap sucks and songs like "Girlfriend", "Umbrellas"..., but if you dig past that it's not all that bad. i suppose you have a point. you do have to dig your way through all that crap to find the odd gem or two. although at the end of the day, it is probably down to personal choice and people's tastes in tv shows, music etc AB 06-18-2007, 03:31 PM i suppose you have a point. you do have to dig your way through all that crap to find the odd gem or two. although at the end of the day, it is probably down to personal choice and people's tastes in tv shows, music etc Thats very true, I doubt you can find any two people who have the exact same taste in music & tv. But many of us can share similiar taste in both.:) dawsongirl 06-18-2007, 09:50 PM I like today's drama shows. I think they are some of the best we've ever had. But their were good dramas in the 70's too and a lot more variety on what shows you could see. I think the 70s and now are the two best decades for dramas. I now a lot of people probably think CBS is only for old people, and all their shows are cookie cutter, but I think they are well acted and very intreguing. It's too bad Emmy doesn't recognize any dramas but those soapy ones on ABC and the envelope pushing ones on HBO. mrs.gingerhinkley 06-19-2007, 12:17 AM both are as bad as each other, i'd never thought that at this current period, most of today's music and tv shows- especially the sitcoms would be so crap. therefore, i cannot choose betwen either of them King Solomon couldnt figure this oen out. Music is bad because all it deals with is sex and profanity and well, TV is about the same sadly. sry to those who still like today's pop culture. ... i'm sick of it. :( Fleet 06-19-2007, 01:51 AM im sure the adults of the 70s and 80s werent too thrilled with music at the time either. There is a difference, though. I think we have passed the time when you can say, "Adults don't like kids music." Not so much the '80s, but I can go through a top 40 list of '70s songs, and pick out at least 10 or 12 my mom would like. Then I can go through a top 40 list of 2006 or 2007 songs, and not only would it be nearly impossible to find one she would like, it would be hard to find one I would like! More evidence comes from the comments from youtube. I've read comments from many 17 and 18 year olds who say this after watching a video from some '50s-'70s songs: "That's music like it should be." "Oh, yes, the good old days of real music." "And look at the junk we have now." "Back then singing was really singing." "What tremendous singing! Oh, how I sometimes wish I grew up back then to hear such great sounds." "I'm only 19, and I can tell the difference between this (real music) VS modern music (fake, popularized music)... why can't everyone see this?" (Note: above comments from video "Remember When," by The Platters from 1959.) Comment on the video "Tonite! Tonite!" (The Mello-Kings,1957): "It's hard to believe now that Doo-Wop once was popular with teenagers like rap is today. Sadly, how times have changed muscially." And one of my favorite comments ("Listen to the Music," Doobie Bros., 1972): "Listen to the real music." Cactus Jack 06-19-2007, 10:31 AM good lord people here are negative. most of the "kidlets" today enjoy the TV/music out there, and really, who else is it aimed for? im sure that a lot of you have barely even seen most of what TV and Music do have to offer. yeah, reality shows suck, but there's still a lot of good stuff if you dig past that. sitcoms may not be what they used to be but there's still a couple of good ones and there IS life outside of the sitcom. music is the same - rap sucks and songs like "Girlfriend", "Umbrellas"..., but if you dig past that it's not all that bad. even still, music and TV (especially music) is mainly aimed at kids who (for the most part) don't see a big problem. im sure the adults of the 70s and 80s werent too thrilled with music at the time either. Ditto to ALL OF THAT! I SALUTE YOU! But yeah I like music and TV from the 50s-now too. Dude111 08-08-2025, 01:48 AM What a good question. I can't decide, it's a toss-up. :rolleyes:Its hard for me to decide.. I would have to say TV and its even more so TV now than when this thread started... TV definetly......... I want good programming back!!! |
