View Full Version : Positive Celebrity Encounters

With all the news about Paris Hilton, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread where people can relate and discuss positive encounters they have had with famous people.

Some can be absolute morons, that's true, but there are a great many that I feel are very kind, admirable people, and there are a number are truly inspirational. I like/admire the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, River Phoenix, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, Karen Carpenter and others, and I've heard lots of positive things about them.

I've heard a lot of positive stories about the Bee Gees and Andy Gibb. I've read hundreds of stories of fans meeting them and they've all reported how nice they are, and how friendly they were. Maurice Gibb (RIP) was particularly friendly and down-to-earth, but Barry and Robin were too. Fans are allowed to wait outside their houses, and if they're not busy, they'll come out, talk to them, have photos taken, etc. They really value their fans, and I've heard the same things about their brother Andy - how polite and nice he was whenever fans approached him.

I know they have/had their faults, but for the most part, I think they are extremely kind people. I tend to get a bit offended on their behalf if ever someone makes fun of them, because they are so much more than simply a "disco band" (although I love their disco songs, they've done much more than that.) They've been releasing songs for almost as long as the Stones. And I do think they deserve a bit more respect than some people give them.

On another forum, I read someone's report of how they met Maurice Gibb and then later Andy Gibb. I copied it over here:

So, to quote "Radiomaniac":

I've met a few great celebs, no nasty ones yet.

Lovely celebs :

Maurice Gibb : I met him in his dressing room after a show he did at a London theatre. He gave me a signed album for my birthday present, I was 14 at the time. He was not only extremely pleasant, he was one of the nicest people I've ever met in my entire life. The very top of my list and never to be beaten.

Andy Gibb : I met Andy before he became a singer. At a concert, he scurried off to get all his older brothers' autographs for me. I asked him to sign as well, he said 'I'm nobody' but I insisted and he laughed and signed. I still have it."

River Phoenix - I think he was a talented actor and I admire the way he stuck to his principles such as animal rights and concern for the environment. He bought several acres of the rainforest in order to preserve it.

Karen Carpenter - another great talent and she seems to have been a very sweet person. She didn't seem to have a lot of self-esteem. I feel so sorry for Karen; she was too young to die.

Wayne Gretzky - Total class in every sense of the word, he made time for the fans even when he was way past scheduled times.

Tommy Lee - Surprisingly incredibly down to earth and approachable. He joked around with all of the backstage staff and invited everyone out to party (that part not as surprising).

Kristen Kreuk (Lana from Smallville) - Total sweetheart who does not come off with any air about her. She was more shy than anything.

Geddy Lee - a quiet, unassuming guy who's never tarnished with fame. Will always be a very good friend. ;)

My husband says John Candy was also a real great guy. Again, very down to earth, charming and appreciative. God I miss him.

Vicki Lawrence is absolutely fab and down-to-earth. Her pictures don't do her justice - she is so ****ing BEAUTIFUL in person. I've met her twice... Last time was in 2004. Last time I met her, I just could not stop looking at her. She was dressed very casually (black turtleneck and light blue jeans) but damn, she just looked amazing. Actually made me jealous, lol. Both times I met her were very positive, by the way.

My dad and stepmom ran into Adam Sandler when they were in Arizona nearly 10 years ago, and they both said he was very nice and funny as hell. :)

I've heard from people who have met Stepfanie Kramer (in my avatar) in person, and they had nothing but wonderful things to say about her - she is just such a nice & sweet lady. I'd love to meet her someday. :)

I've met almost all the American Idols from the past two seasons. Not all of them were nice, but some of them really stood out - Ace Young was the sweetest of them all. He made sure everyone got an autograph, a picture, a hug, whatever they wanted. Even the people in the very back of the crowd. And he would talk to you as if you'd been friends forever. So sweet. Bo Bice was the same way, not to the same level as Ace, but very, very sweet. I even had the chance to - sort of - meet Jennifer Hudson. There's this large wall at the Pepsi Arena in Albany and it's made of glass. She came right up to the glass and spoke with my family and I through the glass before leaving. Very sweet!

I haven't met many other celebrities other than American Idol. I met the guitarist of the band Hawthorne Heights and he was extremely down to earth and sweet. There were tons of people there to see him and he spent most of the time with my friend and I. This summer, I'm hoping to meet Karina Smirnoff - who's in my avatar - and I've heard wonderful things about her, so I'm hoping I'll have a positive experience as well!

I've had several. In March 2001, I bumped into Danny Bonaduce at the Universal Citywalk (I was in CA visiting a friend at the time). He was with his daughter, and he signed an autograph for me and took a picture with me. I still have them. He was very nice to me.

I also had the pleasure to meet many of the cast members of Little House in the Prairie in July 2005 at the Tombstone Western Film Festival. Here is my favorite story of that time:

Yes, he was so nice! My little sister was in love with him, and she gave him a little keychain she had, and he gave her a kiss! He was really nice to me too, the only time he faltered was when my uncle couldn't get the camera to work and he seemed a little annoyed that he had to pose for the picture twice. But he was the Idol who came out the most that year. Last year the one who came out the most was Paris, who was ADORABLE in person.

Louie Anderson-I met him in Las Vegas twice and he's a real sweetheart. Once was during a show he did and the second time was at his book signing. He's a very nice guy. Very down-to-Earth and warm. It was alot of fun metting him. He took pictures with me, signed my book and chatted with me a while.

Stephnie Weir(MADtv member from 2000-2006)-By far the nicest person I've ever met. She was performing at the UCB theatre and I got the chance to meet her backstage and she was so nice. She also took a picture with me, gave me her autograph and chatted with me. I actually felt like she was an old friend the way she spoke to me. Very lovely person!! I'd love to meet her again!!

Julianne Moore-Very sweet! Even thought I spoke to her briefly as she was a customer at the restaurant I was hosting at, she was still a sweetheart! She smiled alot and was very nice and her son was a sweetie too!

Dom DeLouise-Funny guy and very sweet!

Of course I'd of loved to have met Vivian Vance, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Elizabeth Hartman. They all seemed like very nice people with extreme talent! :)

I met Michael too. Actually bumped into him in NYC in 2005. He was walking(with a limp poor guy)and had sunglasses on but I knew it was him. I smiled and said hello to him and although he was walking he smiled and said hi back. Seemed really nice....I guess he also appreciated the fact that I didn't shout his name or cause a scene.

Very likely - that's actually how most Canadians treat celebrities. We might be dying on the inside, but they always say we're never really intrusive - just acknowledge their presence and move on.

Yes, I've heard Michael is quite nice, but I've never met him. He's from the "other side of town" so to speak. ;)

Back around 1990, I met the actor who played Jeremy on the soap, All My Children. I can't recall his name, only that he's French. I had seen in the paper that he would be signing autographs at a nearby mall. I took my camera and had someone take our picture, but the photo is tucked away somewhere.

One thing I remember distinctly is that I told him that my husband Lou and I were fans of him and the show. After he signed a picture and had his picture taken with me....as I was walking away, he said, "Give my best to Lou." That just floored me. It was so sweet.

Can anyone help me remember the actor? He was such a handsome man.

Some famous people I've met:

Mandy Moore - In 2001 back when she was a bubblegum pop star and not a B-list Hollywood actress. I gave her a little gift package with a necklace and other stuff inside. The wrapping was from Sanrio and she was all like "OMG it's Hello Kitty! I love Hello Kitty!" It was so adorable.

Jasmine Trias - In 2005, the year after she appeared on American Idol. She was always criticized as being one of the worst contestants on the show but she sang about three songs before an autograph signing at Tower Records and she sounded AMAZING. I got to shake her hand and take a pic with her (And I blinked  ). Didn't get to say much to her but it felt great being around her. She has such a sweet demeanor about her.

Anthony Rapp - February 2006. He played Mark Cohen in the original Broadway version and film version of Rent. I saw him walking down the street randomly before his autograph signing and said hi to him through my car door...I think I freaked the poor guy out. :o  He read part of his book to some fans, sang a couple of songs, and answered questions from the audience. I don't really remember saying much to him either, but I love that guy. :biglove:

A couple of years a go my husband and I briefly met Dick Van Dyke. We were leaving a restaruant in Camarillo, California and my husband stopped to hold the door open for a couple entering the restaraunt. It was Dick Van Dyke and a lady. Even though I am sure that he didn't want to be bothered by fans, he was super nice to us and shook my dh's hand.

I'm now living in the hills north of Toronto and you'd be amazed how much nicer we are just outside the city limits (seriously - makes a huge difference). Toronto has really changed in the last 20 yrs unfortunately.

I kinda figured that with him. He's an absolute riot. I'd love to meet him one day. I have a friend who does a lot of commercials and he was at an audition once with Colin and he said he was hilarious - entertaining all the other actors waiting their turn. Really took the stress away from it for them.

It isn't your fault you were born there, we just get so snubbed for tax $ out west and then you have those da#n Leafs over there too

The rain does suck sometimes but I can tell you I have worked in all but Quebec and NFLD. British Columbia is absolutely the place to be for scenery. We have skiing, mountain climbing/biking, beaches, the Okanagan sun spots and winery's, all within a few hours drive (although we pay throught the teeth to drive out here).

Not looking forward to 2010, British Columbia is a well kept secret and relatively speaking low population. After the world sees it during the Olympics we are in big trouble.

Well first I met many of the players from the Los Angeles Raiders. They used to practice here in my city back in 1987 and a few years after that. They would go into the restaurant that I was the night manager at and eat there many times in groups. I am NOT a Raiders fan, but my late ex-husband was and so it was a thrill for him to get all these autographs from his fave team.

I also met Cheech Marin from Cheech & Chong fame. He came into the place of business I worked at in 1991. He was a customer and he came in with this wife. I had no idea he was even in there until he came through my line to pay for his items. I got his autograph of course and he was very nice, he mentioned to me abt a pilot he was working on for television. I guess that fell through because I never saw it air. He was pretty short. I didn't realize he was that short until I was standing next to him and he and I were just abt an inch difference in height.

At this same job, I also met Whoopi Goldberg; the man who played Doc Baker on Little House on the Prairie; the man who played Billy Jack in those 70's movies, Tom Laughlin. Tom Laughlin was the only one who seemed to not want to be noticed or bothered. I asked for his autograph and although he signed the paper for me, he smiled, but didn't seem to want to converse.
The actor that played Erica Kane's ex-husband (one of them) back in the 70's also walked into this place. His name is Richard Van Fleet and he played Chuck Tyler. This man was gorgeous in person as he was on television. I asked him if Susan Lucci was just as beautiful in person and he said, "Indeed." He didn't seem bothered by my questions or me asking for an autograph.

I met Percy Rodrigues. He made an appearance on one of my fave shows, GOOD TIMES. He played rich cousin Edgar. He is one of those actors where you may not know their name, but you see them all the time on television. He is a character actor.

Him and his wife were eating at this outdoor Malibu seafood restaurant. Me and my ex-husband and our daughter went there to eat. I said to my husband that man looks familiar. I got closer and realized who it was. I was kinda worried abt bugging him. I decided to approach him and his wife. They were both very cordial and he seemed very surprised that I recognized him. I told him how I loved GOOD TIMES and it was great to meet someone from that show, even if he only made one appearance. I asked him abt how the cast was and he told me they were very nice, almost like a family and he very much enjoyed doing that episode.

In 1996 me and my best girlfriend along with our boss, went to a wedding in San Fernando Valley. It was a wedding at a house, so I was really surprised when one of my fave singers from the 60's sang at this occasion. Brenton Wood sang during the wedding and during the reception. He was good friends with the bride and groom. My jaw just dropped. I couldn't believe it. Me and my girlfriend talked with him and his wife. He was very warm, very nice and just overall very approachable. When he sang one of his songs, he inserted my name in the lyrics. It is something I won't ever forget. Too damn bad I didn't have a camera at that time. Here is a link that shows his many hits:
http://www.foreveroldies.com/brenton.htm

I also have a picture of actor Haywood Nelson when he was here in my city as the grand marshall of our Christmas parade. At this time, he was on What's Happening Now! He played Dwayne. When I yelled his name, he looked at me and made a gesture for my camera. He made that big cheesy grin for my camera shot.

The majority of the celebs I met was through the club circuit and yes, you will be shocked of who are the sweetest people i've met.

Paris Hilton-Yes, she's a real sweetheart. I first met her at an L.A club I was deejaying. She's a doll.

Lauren Conrad-Bumped into her at Fred Segal one day, she liked my outfit:D .
T.I(he's a rapper some who don't know)-Again, at a club, dude's mad cool.
Cyndi Lauper-It was during the 1980's, I was five and all I remembered was she called me sweetie!

Soliel Moon Frye-I met her in the eighties as well, I told her I was her number one fan and she was happy about it.

Bobby Brown-I don't care what people say about him, the man is a gentleman(to me anyway, I didn't bother to ask about Whitney.)

Mariah Carey-Met her in New York..wow! She's so not a diva to me.

Other nice celebs I met: Mischa Barton, Drew Barrymore, half of the cast from '90210', Rob Lowe(what a dreamboat!), Jennifer Beals, Pam Grier, Common, Nicole Ritchie, Tatyana Ali, Sarah Paulson, Scary Spice, Kim Karashdisan(sp), The Olsen twins, and Lindsay Lohan(yes, she's a sweetheart!!!!)

OH Nuts!

I've had good experiences with celebs too.

About 20-22 yrs ago I met Ann Meara when she spoke at a center. She was REALLY NICE and very pretty and petite. She had beautiful red hair and an hourglass figure. Nothing like the frumpy characters you see her play on TV.

When I was really young, like 10, I met Danny Thomas at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach. He was really nice, and was, of course, smoking that proverbial cigar.

Actually the latest celeb I met was Whoopi Goldberg. I met her at a ground breaking ceremony at the settlement house situated in the NYCHA projects where she grew up. In person she's real nice and laid back, not like on TV where she feel she has to be on witty & glib-which always seems to get her in trouble.

The nicest, sweetest and down to earth "celebrities" I've met have actually been out of the limelight for 25+ years...they would be Brenda & Wendi Turnbaugh, the twins who played Grace Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie. They still appear at cast reunions and such. They are just terrific! :D

Chris is the sweetest and most gracious man EVER, I swear. He makes all of his fans feel special, he's very personable with all of them, and ... really, there aren't enough words in the world to describe him! I LOVE HIM.

Blake is a sweetie too. Quite a few people have said he's really moody and he acts kinda bitchy at times, but most of the time he's such a doll, and I'm glad I got on his good side when I met him (And I think he really is a good person, I think people just don't get him and his personality). Then again, I gave him a birthday gift (A hat), so I kinda knew how to push the right buttons. :p

I also met Melinda Doolittle, Phil Stacey, and Gina Glocksen from American Idol Season 6 that day too. They were all also really generous and kind and I feel so blessed to have met them.

I met Jasmine Trias again about three weeks ago too. I got to talk to her more and she took two pics with me, so that makes her even greater in my book. :D

I haven't met very many celebs (since I live in Wisconsin) but I'd say the nicest or actually more down to earth celeb I've met is Michael Showalter/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0795290/). I met him last year when I saw him and Michael Ian Black live. Black was also very nice, but rather shy and reserved.

Anyways, Showalter tried on my mom's funny hat and he loved it. I got my picture taken with him and it turned out so cute! First my mom said he could keep the hat and then in exchange he gave us a free copy of the stella shorts DVD! Later he gave the hat back and still let me keep the DVD!

6 months or so later we saw them again and my mom wore the hat again and he remembered us and the hat! He said "Hey, the hat is back!" and smiled. When he saw me this time he said "Hey, how's it going?" like I was an old friend of his. :)

But yeah, so nice and down to earth and of course funny! Can't wait to meet him again sometime!
