Dr. Thong 06-10-2007, 04:24 PM The thing I remember most from this period - 1983 - was Travolta appearing shirtless on the cover of Rolling Stone. All of Travolta's body hair had been waxed off within an inch of its life. They tried to make Tony Manero ultra-slick and more PC. The movie bombed. The general public doesn't even know that a there's a sequel to Saturday Night Fever. I haven't seen it in years. I'd almost like to watch it again to see how bad it is, but I think I'll pass. I know I found out there was a sequel by an accident-lol Brian Damage 06-10-2007, 05:05 PM I know I found out there was a sequel by an accident-lol The only thing that really resembled the first movie was his patented strut. Ireneparalegal 06-10-2007, 08:08 PM The only thing that really resembled the first movie was his patented strut. And his Brooklyn accent. Finola Hughes was laughable in this movie. God, this movie is soooo bad. It makes me wanna vomit. :puke: His hair Solomon looked good. HOWEVER, he was wearing a bandana like thingy that went across his forehead. YUCK! Brieannas21 06-10-2007, 08:17 PM Yeah that movie sucked, it would be a waste of your time if you sat through that movie. catlover79 06-10-2007, 08:18 PM The Bee Gees once again did the music. Two or three songs from the soundtrack I have on their 1967-1990 boxset, and they are pretty good. I have never seen the movie itself, and have no desire to. Sly Stallone was the director - need I say more??  Nighthawk76 06-10-2007, 08:35 PM The thing I remember most from this period - 1983 - was Travolta appearing shirtless on the cover of Rolling Stone. Actually, the movie didn't bomb (though it sure did deserve to) but was one of the highest grossing movies of 1983. I think that it has been pretty much forgotten though. I remember when Paramount put out Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Flashdance, The Urban Cowboy, Staying Alive and Footloose on DVD in 2003, Staying Alive was the only one that didn't place somewhere on the Billboard chart for top selling DVDs. And I actually think that both The Urban Cowboy and Footloose are even worse than Staying Alive. As pretty much everyone has indicated Staying Alive is not only a terrible sequal, but just an awfully bad movie period. Not only did Sly Stallone do a terrible job directing the movie, but he hired his younger brother Frank to write and record songs for the soundtrack. All of which are terrible. One of Frank's songs called "Far From Over" became a top ten hit, though it is a dreadful song. Brieannas21 06-10-2007, 08:36 PM And his Brooklyn accent. Finola Hughes was laughable in this movie. Can you tell I love John Travolta?;) Zoneboy 06-10-2007, 08:46 PM I've never seen the movie but this thread brings back memories of Starrcade 83 (A Flair for the Gold) which IMO was the greatest wrestling event ever and the one that started the PPV revolution. The theme for Starrcade 83 was Frank Stallone's "Far From Over" which also appears on the Staying Alive Soundtrack. The same could not be said about Frank Stallone's post-Staying Alive career. Ireneparalegal 06-11-2007, 07:21 PM ;) MMMMMmmmmmm Deeeeeelicious!!!!! Thanx Brian for the pics. God he looks soooo good in that Urban Cowboy pic. ;) :D dandelion wine 06-12-2007, 03:22 PM  Finola Hughes was such a nasty little :censored: in this movie. I didn't think it was too bad and I loved it when he said, "You know what I feel like doing right now?" then struts down the street at the end. But yeah, stick with Saturday Night Fever - that's your best best. As for Urban Cowboy: One look at John Travolta after he shaves off the beard and mustache then leans back against the bar at Gilley's and.. yeah, that's all that needs to be said. Love.. love.. love that movie. Thank you for comin' down here to Houston so you could make this movie, John. Ireneparalegal 06-12-2007, 09:01 PM The soundtrack to Urban Cowboy was great too. I really loved Boz Scaggs song "Love look what you done to me." Awwww, such memories. catlover79 06-13-2007, 01:16 AM The soundtrack to Urban Cowboy was great too. I really loved Boz Scaggs song "Love look what you done to me." Awwww, such memories. That's one of my brother-in-law's all-time favorite movies. I bought him the UC DVD for Christmas one year. So, Irene, have you ever ridden a mechanical bull?? dandelion wine 06-14-2007, 02:16 PM Ok.. I know I got all "Ooooo, John Travolta without beard and mustache up against the bar at Gilley's = HOT!!!" the other day, but I just plain love the movie - all of it. It's a guilty pleasure that I don't feel guilty for having. And the soundtrack, along with Saturday Night Fever's, is one I've listened to countless times. I made a mistake once, saying that it was based on a Texas Monthly article - actually, it was taken from a 1978 article in Esquire magazine. I'm not sure if anybody's interested out there, but here's a little somethin' - Urban Cowboy (http://www.texasmonthly.com/ranch/texcin/urban.php). TripperFan 06-14-2007, 02:48 PM :LOL Oh yeah, Stayin' Alive should have died! It was a joke - almost as bad as Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club (with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton - poor guys for gettng talked into doing that one too). That bandana was a laugh even in the early 80s - and with Sly involved, it was like he was testing it for his Rambo movies or something! Sorry girls - John is already taken:  Ireneparalegal 06-14-2007, 02:55 PM That's one of my brother-in-law's all-time favorite movies. Dean Winchester 10-14-2007, 04:12 PM I finally saw this movie for the first time on HBO-Family the other night to see if it lived up to it's "reputation". As a lover of bad cinema, how can you hate this movie? It's bloody brilliant! The final "Satan's Lair" sequence that takes up the last third of the movie had me laughing harder than Travolta ever made me laugh on Welcome Back Kotter. And the movie had some of the absolute worst 1980's synth-pop ever. Plus, it had the mom from Charmed in it. How can anyone who enjoys bad cinema hate this movie? LOL!!! Dean Winchester 10-14-2007, 04:18 PM Someone posted the first act of "Satan's Lair" on YouTube, please tell me that this is not comic gold http://youtube.com/watch?v=u9sTxEuuyVU Ireneparalegal 10-14-2007, 05:01 PM :brent Thank you for sharing that with us. Dean Winchester 10-14-2007, 05:09 PM :brent Thank you for sharing that with us. thank god Stallone never went into the Andrew Lloyd Webber type of vein, if this is his idea of a good play. Another funny point someone mentioned on YouTube is that in reality, that play would close on opening night, instead of all the applause it receives at the end. I love Stallone for bringing us the Rocky movies (preferably 1-3)...have yet to see Rocky Balboa. However, he was at that time, such a phenom, that his ego got the best of him and he thought he could bring some "magic" to making a sequel of SNF. My God, there should not have been a sequel to SNF unless all of the principal players were going to be in it and SURELY NOT WITH STALLONE AS THE DIRECTOR! What was my man John Travolta thinking????? He wasn't thinking, that's for sure.  catlover79 10-14-2007, 11:18 PM I love Stallone for bringing us the Rocky movies (preferably 1-3)...have yet to see Rocky Balboa.
