I think cable television has been one of the worst things period. It is overpriced, the same programs are played a thousand times, there are hundreds of channels offered but only a handful seem to have any redeeming programs. It is ridiculous. MTV was once a great channel, too, but now it seems to be a pawn for BET (Black Entertainment Television). Rap music is not the only music out there (thank God!) That is, if you consider smut & gibberish music. TV Land owes its viewers an explanation if they plan on changing the format. The "subtle" changes they have been slipping in on us over the last few years is getting old. They aren't fooling anyone. It goes to show no one in TV today knows what Classic TV really is. noveel 06-10-2007, 01:22 AM TV Land owes its viewers an explanation if they plan on changing the format. Today's kids will be calling Nick crappy in ten years. clj2 06-10-2007, 07:49 AM I predict this 'baby boomer' thing to fail. 'Research' isn't everything, they need to listen to the actual viewers themselves like they claim to. Seems like it's becoming a hodgepodge of a bunch of shows that are related in NO way. That's a turn-off to me. Now they're showing movies that don't even fit with most of the shows. Now where's this Elvis Presley thing coming from??? Um? I say do a 'classic' network (TV Land 2) and 'baby boomer' network (TV Land 1) so everyone can be pleased. DSfan 06-10-2007, 09:53 AM I agree. Seems since 2000 that everything is starting to MASSIVELY suck. Nick @ Nite used to have marathons of I Love Lucy, Diff'rent Strokes, ALF, Bewitched, Gilligan's Island... Now its all newer shows which wouldn't be so bad if they just managed it properly... that does not seem likely of happening any time soon. Please Will Smith don't get shot or anything because they couldn't air anymore Fresh Prince episodes as a tribute... has he been shot and we dont even know?... anyways those shows I mentioned should be on TV Land and Nick@ Nite just has to fix up the sched. Also, channels seem to putting more commercials now.. too much to say, ill just stop Tubehead 06-10-2007, 11:31 AM Only hope I have is that Ion will start showing old tv shows. they been showing tv show like amen and alice. their also showing the wonder years. their hadn't put too many old show yet. but I hope they do. There's currently talk of a la carte cable TV, which the cable providers are obviously opposedd to....saying junk like it restricts feedom of choice, etc. greenlaser5555 06-10-2007, 08:18 PM Today's kids will be calling Nick crappy in ten years. Yeah greenlaser5555 06-10-2007, 08:20 PM No surprise, I also forgot CMT, it doesn't even play much country music any more, just shows aimed at a rural audience like Dukes of Hazard reruns. I know. In the late 90s, CMT used to play country music non-stop. My Mom was obsessed with this channel since she was a huge fan of country music, now she doesn't even watch it anymore. Making sure that MTV plays music video and music oriented programming, TV Land shows classic television and nothing but classic television, and so on. If TV Land would be classic television, I'd make Nick at Nite show "Classic Nick" programming all night, such as Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts and so on, since those shows don't seem to be rerun anywhere else. Remember in 1986 when MTV aired a 22 hour marathon of "The Monkees"? Okay, I don't, but I heard about it and that's what made The Monkees popular again, and the guys went on tour and made some new songs. What are the chances of MTV airing even one episode of "The Monkees" now? Or anything with music in it, lol. I'd be fine if there was a channel devoted to Reality programming. I don't like it, but it's obviously popular. So Reality can have it's own channel and stay off the other channels. I have no intentions of getting cable when I move out on my own. I'll stick to my DVDs. The only show I watch on cable is "Monk" and those come out on DVD after every season is complete. Television needs saving right NOW! (Tho 3 of the 4 CBS Radio stations here in Hartford are decent). The way they run Nick-At-Nite, you'd think Will Smith was a major stock holder of Viacom. Always with these week-long marathons of Fresh Prince. You know I like Full House, Roseanne, and to a lesser extent The Cosby Show - how bout showing week-long marathons of those shows once in a while. When I get a chance I'll post what line-up I'd program TV Land/Nick-At-Nite with. That has no place on TV Land, as far as I'm concerned. I really miss "classic" television...:( icecream 06-12-2007, 09:06 PM At least Extreme Home Makeover is better than Scrubs and Just Shoot Me. But that's not saying much. Jude The Obscure 06-14-2007, 12:35 AM Man, I'll just keeping buying TV DVD sets and eventually shut off the cable! LOL BensonFan 06-15-2007, 10:43 PM Man, I'll just keeping buying TV DVD sets and eventually shut off the cable! LOL Me too....I'm closing in on having everything I need and once I do, I don't really give a damn what's shown on TV. On that note, I have to wonder if the release of TV shows on DVD has had an impact on TV viewership. It would be difficult to quantify, but I have to believe it has. bencasey 06-17-2007, 01:49 AM Me too....I'm closing in on having everything I need and once I do, I don't really give a damn what's shown on TV. On that note, I have to wonder if the release of TV shows on DVD has had an impact on TV viewership. It would be difficult to quantify, but I have to believe it has. Why watch shows with 3-4 minutes missing when you can watch them on DVD complete? TV isn't the only game in town anymore and now that shows are available to the masses (as opposed to those of us who collected films and tapes 25 years ago), no one needs to watch the same shows cut when they are available complete. Maybe if they ran shows that aren't on DVD they might have an audience but they'll never do that. Jack1000 06-17-2007, 11:06 PM See my post in the August TV Land schedule thread for my rant on this topic! One thing to add, If TV Land wants to so appeal to the "Younger MTV generation", why are they screwing around with this Elvis crap? Jack Tubehead 06-18-2007, 12:34 AM I don't watch tv land any more. I used to watch it for sandford and son. Their turing into nick at nite. they keep showing mondern tv show. they need to show black and white show like I love lucy or my three son I heard that their going to show just shoot me and scrubs in 2008. I can't stand tv land any more. I hope they put the old shows on dvd. Zoneboy 06-18-2007, 04:44 AM Tv Land Acronyms: Original way of thinking: Television Variety Lives and Never Dies. :) Current way of thinking: The Viewers Love a New Direction. :( LittleMissGenius 06-18-2007, 05:49 AM Wow! I'm so glad I found this forum. I thought I was the only person who hates the direction that so called specialty channels are going. I can understand MTV changing (ie pandering) to the kids because that is their core audience but, why TV Land & Nick At Nite? I'm only 29 but, I vividly remember watching the 'good' version of Nick At Nite and loving every minute of it. I don't even think I didn't like a show that was in their lineup back then! My parents worked nights when I was a kid and I would stay up watching Nick At Nite so, in a (slightly sad! ) way, it was my babysitter and really one of my fondest memories. I honestly don't see the point in TV Land & Nick airing shows like Full House, Growing Pains & The Cosby Show. They're all good shows and yeah, some are over 20 years old but, they don't qualify as classics in my book. Besides, they can be seen in syndication on other networks so what exactly is the appeal in having them on channels that are suppose to be geared for classic TV lovers? Now TV Land has taken to showing movies like Parenthood. Give me a break! What do movies have to do with TV Land? Don't even get me started on Chasing Farrah. I loathe reality shows to begin with but that hot mess was a waste of time. I honestly wonder why every network has to air a reality show. Surely I'm not the only person who can live without them. I'd love to see the what kind of research Viacom or whoever owns these stations do. Who are they supposedly catering to? Cable/DirectTV is getting to be a bad/expensive joke. On a slightly unrelated note, does anyone else remember a show Nick At Nite aired called "Mad Movies"? My memory is kinda fuzzy but I recall it being a group of comedians who dubbed voices over old movies (like The Little Princess). I seem to remember the cast wearing these shiny, satin-y jackets or something. I'd probably think it was lame now but back then, it was the cat's pajamas! Anyhow, rant over. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks TV has gone downhill. I was beginning to think I was getting old & crotchety. I probably am but whatever. treky 06-20-2007, 04:25 PM I remember MAD MOVIES; but it wasn't on N@N. It used to air in first-run sydnication. I remember Mad Movies coming on Nick At Nite for some reason. I happened to Google it and it was actually called "Mad Movies with the L.A. Connection". They're supposedly going to release a dvd of the shows but, that's been 2 years in the making. I certainly do remember Nick's old lineup. It was the best! There weren't many shows on there I didn't like at the time. They even had really funny promo commercials for the shows. Too bad they've decided to target a more youthful audience. I think more people would watch if they went back to the old format. noveel 06-21-2007, 02:49 AM I certainly do remember Nick's old lineup. It was the best! More people does not mean more advertising dollars. treky 06-21-2007, 03:02 AM I remember, in my city MAD MOVIES used to come on right before SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. But, about N@N. I heard that when they first started, they also used to show ROUTE 66, and they showed a few episodes of MY MOTHER THE CAR which has been called one of the WORST sitcoms ever made. But they showed it simply because some people requested it. And remember those satires they used to have of the major networks news breaks? They called them "GLOBAL VILLAGE NEWS". Unfortunetaly; we'll never see that lineup on there again. I remember once, for St. Patricks day, they showed 4 episodes of MY 3 SONS that focused on "Bub" (their grandfather/housekeeper played by William Frawley) that they called "My wild irish Bub" and they were tinted green! Also; when they took off MY 3 SONS thet showed a weekend marathon of it called "NIGHT OF THE SETTING SONS". comedyfreak 06-21-2007, 05:06 AM I miss the old Summer Block Party lineup. I loved the old N@N until they started showing the new crap which are not classics. I'm enjoying my Bewitched, Flying Nun, and That Girl dvd's along with The munsters. I don't watch N@N or Tvland anymore it's my own personal boycott. treky 06-22-2007, 02:14 AM I don't watch N@N at all anymore. And I'll just watch TV LAND every now and then for BONANZA and GUNSMOKE. Those are the only 2 shows I don't mind watching. I used to watch Andy Griffith (only the black and white, Barney Fife ones) but it's been on so long now; I'm tired of it. And what the **** are they showing MOVIES for!!! And they're just comedies from the 80s and 90s that are on other cable stations!!! And now they're repeating them during the week!! Jamey Greek 04-03-2008, 02:34 PM I know it's been a while but come to think of it I am thinking about writing a parody for TV Land and calling it "TV Wasteland" It's a parody of The Who's Baba O'Riley (Teenage Wasteland) I remember when TV Land had an annual game show called the Ultimate Fan Search which was hosted by Chuck Woolery. I miss that and I also miss the wonders of TV Land where they would air short lived sitcoms from the 1970s and 1980s. bencasey 04-04-2008, 11:23 AM The are doing to TV Land what they did to MTV, making it a channel targeted at an age group (MTV-teenagers, TV Land-Baby Boomers). I expect to see The Real World: Leisure World next. Exactly how is TV Land targeting Baby Boomers? The Baby Boom is considered to be from 1946 to 1964, which means the oldest boomers are 62 and the youngest now 44. The majority of the boomers grew up watching shows in the 50s and 60s and that's what they want to see. How much of that do they show? I was born in 1957 and did the majority of my TV viewing between 1964 and 1973. Again, how are they scheduling what I want? That idea is false. American Life is more of a Boomer network than TV Sham. I gave up my cable connection over three years ago for some of these very same reasons. I live in a rural area, so antenna television is right out, and will be even moreso after next February! Reality garbage, not giving quality shows a chance to build an audience, rerun after rerun after rerun on cable stations (now with 48 hours A DAY of Law & Order!) I don't mind seeing classic television from any era, but I don't want to see the same show six or eight times a DAY. And I'd like to see some things that were cool and maybe not as well known. I decided that my 55 bucks a month could be better spent buying a TV season of my favorite shows on DVD, then on a month of cable with nothing I want to watch. So that's where my money goes now, in DVDs. bencasey 04-13-2008, 12:30 AM There are still many shows I would love to get more of, mostly short run 60s and 70s programs, but for the most part I have about 90% of the shows that are important to me. I don't really give a damn what anyone shows anymore as I have enough on tape and DVD to watch for the rest of my life. I spent 25+ years building my collection and now I can enjoy it. So TV Sham, run whatever crap you want, I don't care because seeing shows cut up like they run them is worthless anyway. RockinChair 04-17-2008, 10:20 PM Think about that show for a moment. One of the "contestants" was fat slob looking geek that, I think, eventually won the contest. If I am not sadly mistaken I saw that "geek contestant" in some type of promo for TVLand a while back (cleaned up to as normal as he can get) and he is actually an executive on staff. I would say there may be smell to this. Remember the $64.000 Question deal? TVLand is basically finished. To me, classics are those from the beginning to 1980, if even that recent. storrs19 04-23-2008, 09:18 AM All television is garbage these days except for a few select channels (History International, Science, Biography, and Turner Classic Movies). I watch alot of sports and that is about it. So many channels used to be great and now they suck wind. I have gotten used to it by now though and don't even bother tuning them in. I just watch alot of dvd's now. rodwayne 04-23-2008, 10:55 AM One question:Does any of the so-called "Baby Boomers" gives a rat's :cuss: about the Big 4-0,or Extream Makeover,or High School Reunion,or any of the other farces they claim us so-called baby boomers like?!I know I'm not quite a "Baby Boomer",but I'm old enough to like classic T.V. shows from the 50s-60s(Actually watching them in re-run of course)and don't like much of anything passed 1990!! |
