I've been watching the Season 1 set, and it seem like the Ms. Romano character could be very short-fused, angry, bitter, and very unpleasant at the drop of a hat. No wonder she didn't get along with her older daughter. They were too much alike!!

Ann Romano I enjoyed because they wrote her well as being angry, pissed off, insecured and having to take care of herself for the first time in her life without relying on a man to do that as well as raising two teenage daughters.

She is the first divorced mom who is the lead character in a TV series (remember they try to make Mary Tyler Moore's character, Mary Richards' as a divorcee but they did not a show about a divorced woman), not perfect mom and with a temper to boot. I loved the episodes when she got on the warpath. The episode when her ex came by to announced his upcoming marriage and the argument was great. She slammed him good. Also, the first TV mom and daughter where you saw the open conflict.

Hats off to Norman Lear, again, for bringing reality by way of sitcoms.

I think it's good that Ann had two daughters - one the troublemaker and one the good girl. Barbara hardly gave Ann any trouble, but she was often caught in the middle of Ann and Julie's fights. But it was still clear that they all loved each otehr, and that was a good thing. :D

I wonder if she is re watching this time around on Antenna! I wish this person would come back on and post with us. A lot of ODAAT threads were started by this poster years ago. wondering what became of this person?

If you think about it, our dear Ms. Romano kind of coined the phrase " Oh my God"!!!! Except she didn't say it like we do now. Really quickly, dramatic and loud like "OH MY GOD" Or how we type it on the internet OMG!!! She said it calmer and slower Oh - My- God. But still she said it before it became a popular everyday phrase!!!!!

Me too, Bonnie.

I was so in agreement with much of what he/she had to say.

The best way to describe Ann Romano for those who have never seen the show is that she was more than a single mom; she was something of an arrogant feminist.

Oh, she had issues. Norman Lear was brilliant in bringing relatable characters into living rooms across America. Ann Romano was a divorcee with 2 teenage daughters, limited employable skills, (this was 1975 mind you) YEAH she came with a lot of baggage. He focuses on the mother/teenage daughter DRAMA, throws in a male character that is supportive, but Ann is not interested romantically. I can think of at least 4 casual female acquaintances off the top of my head that are in very similar circumstances, one of whom is a widower, with 2 teenage daughters that make Mackenzie look like Rebecca from Sunnybrook farm, she is a little older than Ann Romano, but almost identical looking. There must be millions of viewers that can relate to Ann Romano & her issues, or at least some of them. Brilliant Mr. Lear.

Ann Romano could be extremely annoying a lot of times, but all in all, she was a decent person.
