View Full Version : steve In the Early Years Or The Later Years which do you prefer?
USATVFAN 06-06-2007, 11:52 PM do you prefer Steve in the early years or the later years?
i prefer Steve in the later years because he began to mature by season 6.
and the early episodes were hard to watch
GeorgiaboyJeff! 06-09-2007, 02:01 PM I don't know! I found Steve to be really annoying in the first few seasons and he seemed geekier. In the later seasons he mellowed out but he was still a nerd. It was kind of weird watching Jaleel still play a nerd when he was all grown with his voice deepening and everything!
Scoobiedoo30 06-09-2007, 10:23 PM both early and Later Year's
tanquant 06-10-2007, 04:23 PM I would have to say the early years
Dennis Dubois 06-11-2007, 09:28 PM Early years
I started watching as a small child in 1994, so I identified more with the later years of Steve. However, after watching the entire series, the early years suit Steve the most.
Do you agree that in 1993 (between Seasons 4 and 5) Steve grew up real fast?
JAHokie46 06-12-2007, 09:48 AM Later years, without a doubt. His character became deeper and more complex than just the annoying dweeby smart guy breaking stuff. He had complex relationships with Laura and Myra, even more with the Winslows when he moved in, with Eddie and Waldo once they graduated, etc.
He became more of a real person with deeper relationships and true character developments. Last 1/3 of the show was at its best with the middle third somewhat close behind and the first third way behind.
Karen197488 06-18-2007, 10:31 PM I would say the later years. I liked it when they introducted the charcter of Stefan (Jaleel White) Jaleel was so good looking as Stefan!!
Furienna 06-20-2007, 12:13 AM The poll actually has three alternatives, seasons 1-4, seasons 5-7 and seasons 8-9. Well, I chose seasons 5-7. During this time, he had matured, he was with Myra and almost forgot about Laura, and he wasn't about to marry the Laura bitch yet.
blue4t 06-21-2007, 01:39 PM I prefer Steve in the later years with all his inventions. He's still annoying and still a nerd, but he is more liked, and more interesting.
Buffyboy323 06-24-2007, 02:19 AM I prefer Steve in the first 6 seasons (I voted season 1-4 though). When they got older, it was just annoying to see him acting so silly. And his voice got annoying later on too!
Furienna 06-24-2007, 07:45 AM Well, it wasn't Jaleel White's natural voice anymore. His natural voice was only used for the Stefan character.
Buffyboy323 06-24-2007, 11:30 AM Well, it wasn't Jaleel White's natural voice anymore. His natural voice was only used for the Stefan character.
His voice was funny the first few years....When he became an adult, it was just annoying. You could really tell his voice got very deep, and he was forcing Urkel voice.
GSU2004 06-24-2007, 04:46 PM The early years prior to all the crazy inventions, cloning and other unrealistic antics. At least in the earlier years, you can see a child adopting a chimp to save it from animal testing, breaking stuff and chasing after a girl who does not like him like that. As the years when on, I guess they thought newer kids would enjoy the antics while the original fans were growing up.
*ROGER* 06-25-2007, 01:49 AM My Steve vote goes to the earlier seasons. Steve was super annoying, but I found him quite endearing at times....especially in seasons 1 -4. :)

I'm just curious but why don't you like Laura?
Furienna 08-04-2007, 02:31 PM Why should I? Steve kissed the ground she walked on, and she still treated him the dirt on that ground. She was a selfish, shallow, ugly bitch. Nothing to like about her. And having Steve not only love her, but even MARRY her, just doesn't make any sense to me.
tanquant 08-04-2007, 03:24 PM Laura and her family were mean to Steve in the earlier episodes. There is no denying that. All except mother Winslow she knew from the start that Steve was a winner. They should have brought her back in the later seasons just to tell Laura I told you so. I love the episode when Steve was taking Laura to her cheerleading competition and they stayed in the motel and he told her to sleep in the bathtub!!!. I think that was the only time when he stood up for himself.
Furienna 08-04-2007, 03:51 PM Harriet wasn't mean usually either. Neither were Jody and Richie. But Eddy and Laura despised him because he wasn't popular, even though they appreciated what he did sometimes. And Carl should just have had a little more patience with him.
tanquant 08-04-2007, 06:00 PM No Harriet wasn't mean to him he just made her angry at times. It was Eddie and Laura that called him names like geek, dweeb, nerd boy. I know that it had to hurt his feelings but he never stopped being himself and liking himself. Richie loved him. He called him "Uncle Steve". I loved Steve in the early years before the show started to go sci-fi. He was adorable. Carl had a problem with patience. He reminded me of Ralph Kramden. Ralph had zero patience with Norton.
Furienna 08-04-2007, 06:06 PM But at least, they eventually started caring about him, even in front of other people! By 7th season, Steve was even allowed to move in with them, when his parents went to Russia. I still don't think they should have set him up with Laura though.
ThomasE 08-07-2007, 03:18 AM I prefer Steve in the first 6 seasons (I voted season 1-4 though). When they got older, it was just annoying to see him acting so silly. And his voice got annoying later on too!
I agree. I preferred him during the first season and throughout the next few. He just came off to me as some overgrown nerdy kid. However, Jaleel White will always be my childhood hero.
Eddie, Laura and Carl just say they don't want to be bothered with Steve but over time and deep down they cared about him and were his friends. Eddie even admitted in one episode that when he really thinks about it Steve is one of his best friends when that faternity guy told him not to hang out with him anymore. Carl admitted to Steve he was like a son in the 9th season and they even had touching moments before that. Now yes Laura was mean to him at the times, but you can see that their friendship was building, and in my opinion they killed that chemistry by putting them together, they had chemistry as just friends not as a couple.
LincolnHeightsfan 08-16-2007, 06:06 PM When people grow up, they change. Laura grew up and started to realize Steve was a great guy, and started to have feelings for him. Anyways, I voted for Steve in Seasons 5-7. I thought those were Steve's best years on the show. In the early years, he was your typical sitcom geek. Wore a pocket protector, ate weird foods, had weird pets. Then as time went on he became more diverse, and we got to see a lot more of him, and know a lot more about his personal life. Especially when he moved in with the Winslows in Season 7. The last 2 seasons, I didn't like the charachter as much, because #1 he was out of high school, and was starting to seem less like a nerd, but more like a straight up weirdo. and #2 I thought it was ridiculous that he made Stephan a totally seperate person. Also his inventions got wackier and less believeable by then too. In my opinion Family Matters should have ended after the 7th Season.
catlover79 08-16-2007, 06:08 PM Early years - he wasn't nearly as irritating and he wasn't in every scene. He was a supporting character who occasionally took the spotlight - and it should've stayed that way.
Furienna 08-16-2007, 06:24 PM When people grow up, they change. Laura grew up and started to realize Steve was a great guy, and started to have feelings for him.
And still, Laura didn't give Steve a chance before he stopped wearing his suspendors and dropped his voice.
