View Full Version : Shouldn't CBS RENAME the Price is Right Game show since there will be a new host?

I don't know if the title "THE NEW PRICE IS RIGHT" would work but wouldn't it make sense to change the title along with the new host? I think everything should be different, the new host should not come through TWO DOORS, and the name should be changes simply because we are entering a new era of the show so it's no need for it to be similar to the wa it was when BOB was the host. Anyone agree? Shouldn't the goal for CBS be to make you FORGET about the OLD PRICE IS RIGHT when watching the new one?

No problem Irene, I have a feeling it will still be referred to as the price is right but almost everything about season 36 is up in the air. Until the new host is named they can't do a thing. That will not happen until at the very earliest the middle of June.

I don't want to forget the old price is right. We have to accustom ourselves to the fact that people don't work forever and they don't live forever. Bob wanted to leave and that was something we knew would occur eventually. I wanted to answer that question because I realized you asked that question and I didn't answer it.

Let me use an example. I loved The Tonight show with Johnny Carson. It was sad to see him leave. I had always enjoyed Jay Leno when he guest hosted. When he came on to make The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, I will admit it was kinda hard to watch and not miss Johnny. However, I love what Jay has done. He does a monologue just like Johnny did. He has his own band and they too are incorporated into the monologue at times just like Johnny did with Doc. There are similarities but Jay has made it his own show.

I think when the choice is made to find a new host for TPIR, it will be done with the upmost respect for the show and it will be someone who will bring in a new generation of fans to the show. There have been many changes on TPIR with the announcers and the girls, we got over it and we will get over the fact that Bob is gone.

Exactly, Irene! TPIR will carry on with Bob Barker's eventual successor(hopefully Todd Newton). We'll be thankful for Bob's years hosting the show, but even as he retires, it will be in good hands, because the next host in line will host the show his way and have fun doing it without attempting to be Bob. After all, the host being himself happens to be the same kind of advice Bob Barker passed along to Wink Martindale(in 1972) and other game show hosts, back when Bob started on TPIR. Bob's advice works and other hosts really need to host their respective game shows in their own special way and not try to be someone else. His successor will know to just be himself and have fun hosting and entertaining the audience, if you know what I'm getting at.

A name change is not a slight change.

A name change would only make sense if the game show or the format were changed. TPIR has had other hosts when it was a nighttime game show and nothing changed.

A name change would only be needed if there were a year mentioned in the title...such as Match Game 77. When the new year came along it was Match Game 78 and so on. When it was a night game it was Match Game PM.

The games will remain the same. Look at Family Fued. Same game, different hosts. Those contestants kissed the host (forgot his name, the one who died) and no one raised an eyebrow or made a fuss abt that being Richard Dawson's "thing".

The only "times that are changing" on TPIR is the host. Game shows have changed hosts before, this is nothing new.

This is basically why I feel a name change is not needed. Not to mention the fact that the show has been such a mainstay. It could make some viewers think that the show is radically more different than it is. They shouldn't change a thing else except get a new competent host, IMO. At least not now. That will just alienate folks. And like Irene said, the format isn't being altered.

It's not even worth talking about if all we're going to do is criticize someone's opinion. I think the new host won't last more than 3 years at most. The show is getting old. I know the only reason I watched was to see Bob Barker, and I'm not the only one. JUmping into the new era of telelvision, the show will probably be cancelled soon. They're probably going to make a new set, get new music and everything, and that will hurt the show and viewership. Plus, eeveryone's going to turn over to The View to see Hasselbeck argue with someone else (isn't that sad!)

I agree with you. Its sad but probably true. Most of the people I know that watch it , do it because of Bob. I asked my Dad who watches it quite regularly if he'll still watch it after Bob leaves and he says he won't. About the only game show I liked after the original host left was Family Feud and that was when Ray Combs hosted it but since he left I haven't bothered,. They go from host to host now with each one worst than the last.

It's a true classic. You've hit the nail on the head as far as the next host avoiding being Bob Barker's copycat. The next host should just be himself, have fun hosting the show, make the show all his own, do what he does best as far as entertaining the contestants is concerned and basically, host the show his way. TPIR will do just fine with Bob Barker's successor, just as long as he hosts the show by just being himself. This doesn't exactly sound simple, but if you're going to succeed in the game show industry, just be yourself-that's the way it is. Think about Jay Leno when he succeeded Johnny Carson-he's made The Tonight Show all his own. The Price is Right's next host should follow that example and make that show all his own. BTW, I don't care about The View, so I prefer not to watch that show.

Meredith Viera wouldn't have time to handle three shows at once-she's busy with both NBC's Today and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? As for Ashton Kutcher, he's likely going into feature films.
