Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 03:59 PM Do you think it was that viewers had goten use to seeing Mr. Drummond Single or was it just the women who played the first Maggie was all wrong for the part? I think it really had to do with people use to seeing Mr. D a single man. Both Maggie's were horrible. TVFactFan 05-27-2007, 04:04 PM I think it really had to do with people use to seeing Mr. D a single man. Both Maggie's were horrible. I hated the VOICE of the First Maggie-lol Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 04:05 PM I hated the VOICE of the First Maggie-lol What was wrong with her voice? TVFactFan 05-27-2007, 04:12 PM What was wrong with her voice? Just annoying, reminded me of Flo's voice-lol That's what it is, she was a Classy Flo-lol Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 04:15 PM The second Maggie had the same accent. TVFactFan 05-27-2007, 04:23 PM The second Maggie had the same accent. Well when Comcast adds a new season 8 ep I will see if I can figure out the Difference Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 04:35 PM Well when Comcast adds a new season 8 ep I will see if I can figure out the Difference The main problem with the second Maggie is she was waaaaay over the top. She tried to dang hard to be a dramatic character. TVFactFan 05-27-2007, 04:39 PM The main problem with the second Maggie is she was waaaaay over the top. She tried to dang hard to be a dramatic character. I just found out today that ABC cancelled DS after ep 19 in the last season.-lol So the last season only has 19 eps instead of 24 ThomasE 05-27-2007, 04:52 PM The main problem with the second Maggie is she was waaaaay over the top. She tried to dang hard to be a dramatic character. Maggie #1. I did not have a problem with her voice nor her acting. I loved her southern accent. I love Dixie Carter. It is just that she seemed out of place. She seemed better on "Designing Women". Mary Anne Mobley who is #2 seemed to play better with Conrad Bain as a wife. I loved her in the role. The only thing to mar my happiness with her in the role was the acting from time to time. She needed some work. About five or six years ago, we had a discussion on the boards about this issue with Mary Anne Mobley. She looked the part and I loved her portrayal but she needed some fine tuning with the acting. To me, both Maggies did not have similar accents at all. Ireneparalegal 05-27-2007, 05:01 PM Why was Dixie Carter replaced? Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 05:07 PM Why was Dixie Carter replaced? She went on to star in another show, but that show failed. ThomasE 05-27-2007, 05:07 PM Why was Dixie Carter replaced? Hey Irene, I talked with Shavar Ross (Dudley) six years back and he told me that Gary did not like Dixie and so she was fired 'indirectly' by Gary. The producers let her go and brought in Miss America for the part. So it really wasn't another TV project that brought on her departure, she was let go. Things did not work out. Ireneparalegal 05-27-2007, 05:09 PM I think Dixie fit in waaaay better. She seemed like the type that would marry Drummond. She was likeable. I agree with what was said, Mary Ann was toooo dramatic. Trying tooooo hard. I think Karma kicked Gary in the a$$ for even suggesting someone to be fired. Look where he is at now. We had a big discussion about that. That seemed to be one of the hot topics. The over the top lines were: Sam's Missing "Pleeeaazze. Find my soooon." "Phillip, I don't give a d-mn about those chairs!" From Bulimia Ep: Kimberly: I can stop anytime. Maggie: (very cold look) I don't think so sweethart. We discussed these. TVFactFan 05-27-2007, 05:25 PM What are u talking about? "Bulimia"? The Kidnap ep Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 05:29 PM The Kidnap ep It was horrible just for Maggie alone. ThomasE 05-27-2007, 05:30 PM You need to see that one. It is a good ep IMO and you will get to see what we are talking about when it comes to MaryAnne's skills. Brian Damage 05-27-2007, 05:34 PM and you will get to see what we are talking about when it comes to MaryAnne's skills. ...or lack thereof ;) ThomasE 05-27-2007, 05:40 PM Well Brian, she did try. It is just in retrospect, it looks bad when you are selling the show as a package. catlover79 05-29-2007, 12:45 AM Ever notice that when a star doesn't like a supporting player, it's the supporting player that tends to overshadow the star later on? Dixie Carter went on to a highly successful sitcom of her own (Designing Women), stage work, and even now is well known for a recurring role on Desperate Housewives. Gary Coleman went onto, ummmm, mall security and a failed bid for Governor of California. Enough said. John Amos was disappointed in the quality of Good Times since Jimmie Walker's JJ and his wild and crazy antics took center stage. I don't know if Jimmie Walker had anything to do with John Amos being fired, but who has had the more successful show biz career? John Amos was in Roots, The District, West Wing, and more recently, Men In Trees. Since Good Times ended, Jimmie Walker has basically vanished into obscurity. To get back to Dixie Carter, I heard that she signed with CBS after NBC cancelled Diff'rent Strokes. By the time ABC picked up the show, she was unavailable. That's why they recast her role with Mary Ann Mobley. That's what I've always heard, anyway... Natalie1969 05-31-2011, 09:45 AM I think Maggie was appropriate in saying that Kimberly couldn't just get over her bulimia like it was a cold. I think her reaction was very realistic and you could tell Maggie really cared about Kimberly the way she tried to get help for her and kept on Mr. Drummond about getting help and getting out of denial. |
