View Full Version : The Ropers had to go in the third season.
TJAMES03 05-27-2007, 07:00 AM While this is just my opinion, after seeing the entire run of "TC" many times, I have to say that (though I loved them to death) the Ropers had to go by the end of the thrid season. At first I thought that they may have had a season more left in them, but the Ropers were really becoming repetitive in their jokes. As a matter of fact, a lot of "TC" eps. were becoming repetitive in the third season. You could almost set your watch to certain scenes/taglines.
Believe it or not, while it was not as good as it was, Chrissy leaving was almost something that had to happen too. She was also becoming boring by the end of her run.
What do you think?
sunshinefizzy 05-27-2007, 09:03 AM I see where you come from. Sometimes when I watch one of the later ones, I wonder what wuold happen if nothing changed but you have to think about what good came of the later seasons with cast changes. I think Don Knotts was great as the little-boy-inside-a-man landlord also it gave Jenilee Harrison a jump start in her career and in a way, it did the same with Priscilla even though she had more credits to her name then Jenilee did.
Carrie 05-29-2007, 03:27 PM I see what you mean. The Ropers ongoing battle with intimacy started to get a little old after a while. Mrs. Roper should have just accepted the fact that he wasn't going to change and move onto something else in their relationship. I'm sorry to say that Chrissy started to annoy me during her last year or so. Up until then, I really liked her character. That's not to say that I didn't like some of her later episodes though.
TVFactFan 05-29-2007, 03:47 PM Your Reasoning for why they had to go after season 3 is why they were not allowed to return once their spinoff failed. I'm sure the producers spinned off the Ropers characters because they felt it was time for a CHANGE, not because they felt they deserved their own show

I agree...Mr. Furley brought something fresh to the show. I also liked the addion of Cindy Snow, she brought out the best in John and I feel the show peaked in season 5.
Janice 05-31-2007, 12:12 PM I agree. I've been watching a lot of TC with the Ropers lately, and that 'no sex' routine got very old. How many times can a person laugh at the same joke told a different way.

Mr. Furley was a 52 year old loser-lol

You are exactly right. Chrissy was becoming boring because her stupid act was getting old and wasn't really funny anymore. The Ropers were getting stale too and Don Knotts was definitely funnier!
Terri and Cindy were both better roomates than Chrissy but Cindy had the same problem and Chrissy since Cindy's goofy bumbling ways got old quick too but Terri was the best roomate since she was funny and pretty and the best actor of the blondes!
The show could've gone on longer with Terri! Too bad it didn't!
Laike 08-09-2007, 07:24 AM Even though I like to see actors and actresses stay through out the entire run of a series, sometimes it is best to get new characters in there. It keeps things fresh. Don Knotts kind of revived the show a little bit. He was incredible. I think back to early Chrissy, though, before they made her too stupid, and I think that character would have been good until the very end.
I Love John Ritter 08-10-2007, 05:24 PM I loved the Ropers, but I do agree that their jokes got old after a while. I loved the addition of Furley. He's my favorite of the landlords. As far as Chrissy goes, I thought she was funniest towards the end. Though I do think that if she had lasted longer she would have continued to get dumber an dumber and it would eventually no longer be funny.

Mr. Roper personality never got OLD, only his gay jokes toward jack

that MAY have had something to do with it..after all, the American series went about 5 times as long as the original British Man About the House series , however, I suspect that more than anything, the Producers were trying to duplicate the success of the British "The Ropers" spinoff ( The US show pretty much copied the Brit version, script for script, btw. ), in the same way that they tried to copy the Man About the House sequel ( Robin's Nest ) with "Jack's Place"

I never said his personality got old, I said the Ropers' jokes got old.
Mr. Television 08-11-2007, 12:42 AM " Not tonight Helen I have a headache"
Mikado 08-11-2007, 12:56 AM At least it was believeable that Stanley didnt want Helen.....what was weird was AL Bundy saying the same kind of thing to his HOT wife Peggy! ;)

The reason for the Ropers being spun off was greed and nothing else. The seventies was when the spinoff craze really began. When a show (insert your favorite top 10 show here) became a smash, the networks wanted to duplicate its success by spinning off supporting characters into their own shows so they could grab more market share and ratings.
Some spinoffs were successful, some weren't, and some never got past the pilot stage. I believe Norman Fell didn't even want to do the spinoff, but was either contractually obligated to do so or was forced into it by the producers.
And weren't the landlord characters from Man About The House spun off into their own series, George And Mildred?? I seem to remember such a credit being run during the end credits of The Ropers.

They certainly WERE, and, as I remarked earlier on this thread, the scripts from the British show were used almost word-for-word on "The Ropers"
Skywalker 08-11-2007, 08:06 PM The one good thing about the Ropers leaving is it gave Jack, Janet and Chrissy more screen time. The Ropers had a lot of scenes together and most of the time they were by themselves in their apt and to me that took away from the main characters on the show. When Furley was on the show, he always had scenes with the main characters.
