Yeah i know this thread is a day early, but I don't care.

Greetings superfans! TJL here.

:starwars

Welcome to the Star Wars 30th Anniversary thread, celebrating all things Star Wars!

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since George Lucas' sci fi adventure masterpiece premiered in theaters across America and became the cultural phenomenon we all know today.

Please feel free to post your thoughts, reflections, and memories of the Star Wars films. Talk about the characters, the toys, the actors, whatever!

I will also post some info about the scheduled events this weekend that are also celebrating this great day.

Happy Anniversary Star Wars!

30. “This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the end of Kenobi, and will soon see the end of the rebellion.”

29. “What a piece of junk!”

28. “Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease.”

27. “I’m Luke Skywalker, I’m here to rescue you.”

26.“Watch your mouth kid, or you’ll find yourself floating home.”

25.“Evacuate in our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances.”

24.“If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador? — Commander, tear this ship apart until you’ve found those plans. And bring me the passengers, I want them alive!”

23.“Look, good against remotes is one thing, good against the living, that’s something else.”

22.“Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?”

21. “What are we going to do? We’ll be sent to the spice mines of Kessel and smashed into who knows what.”

20. “That’s no moon, it’s a space station.”

19. “This is some rescue. You came in here and you didn’t have a plan for getting out?”

18. “He’s the brains, sweetheart!”

17. “You just watch yourself. We’re wanted men. I have the death sentence on 12 systems.”

16. “I’ll be careful.”

15. “You’ll be dead!”

14. “Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”

13. “Into the garbage chute, flyboy!”

12. “This is Red 5, I’m going in.”

11. “Boring conversation anyway. Luke, we’re gonna have company!”

10. “The Force is strong with this one.”

9. “I suggest a new strategy, R2. Let the wookiee win.”

8. “I’m a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan.”

7.“You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor. Take her away!”

6. “You’re all clear, kid! Now let’s blow this thing and go home!”

5. “These blast points — too accurate for sandpeople. Only imperial stormtroopers are so precise.”

4. “I’ve got a very bad feeling about this.”

3. “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? … It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.”

“When I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master.”

“Only a master of evil, Darth.”

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

“Use the Force, Luke.”

“You don’t need to see his identification … These aren’t the droids you’re looking for … He can go about his business … Move along.”

“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.”

“May the Force be with you.”

I was eight years old, and my father on one of his rare saturdays off took my brother my sister who was probably about 5 and myself to see Star Wars.

I remember we had to drive very far to the theater on route 1. This was long before the multiplexes started cropping up in New Jersey, so the twin cinema style theater had to suffice.

I really had no idea what this movie was about, but my Fahter had mentioned that one of his co-workers had seen it.

From the very second the words Star Wars flashed on the screen to John Williams' booming score I was hooked. The action, the spectacle, the good guys and bad guys. I was amazed.

We talked about the movie all the way home, and then we took turns telling Mom everything that had happened onscreen.

I saw Star Wars five more times that summer with either my family or friends.

And as many of you know whenever it comes on I will drop what I am doing and watch it again.

;)

Happy 30th Anniversary Star Wars! In my opinion, it's the greatest movie ever made. I've been a Star Wars fan ever since I was a little kid. I used to have some of the Star Wars action figures, trading cards and a coloring book. I wish I still had some of those action figures, they're probably worth a lot of money now.

In honor of Star Wars turning 30, I plan on watching episodes IV-VI tomorrow night. :)

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian movie fan on his way to pose for a Star Wars 30th anniversary photo shoot was arrested by police after his replica laser pistol was mistaken for a more earthly machine gun, media reported on Friday.

The 32-year-old man, dressed in black and carrying a backpack with a replica laser blaster poking out the side, alarmed diners at a food court in central Melbourne.

"It was a replica gun. We weren't sure what we were dealing with," Senior-Constable Daniel Sage told the Herald Sun newspaper. Photographs showed a gun closely resembling the weapon carried by Star Wars rogue Han Solo in the cinema classic.

The man had been on his way to pose for a community newspaper ahead of the 30th Star Wars movie anniversary when he was surrounded by armed police, forced to the ground and handcuffed.

Police said despite being a harmless replica and a close match to a weapon from a galaxy far, far away, the man would be charged with possessing an unregistered firearm.

Any fan who chooses to dress up like one of the Star Wars characters (especially characters with firearms) should always be careful never to display thier prop weapons in public, since most of the "blaster" type weapons in the Star Wars universe are redressed versions of actual guns.

Han Solo's blaster is based on a German "broom handle" Mauser pistol. The props designers added on a few parts and mounted a scope on top.

Here are a few of my favorite Star Wars websites.

www.starwars.com
The official Star Wars website, which has tons of stuff to look at. Plus links to lots of great Star Wars shopping

Wookieepedia the Star Wars wikipedia (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) I love this site. A comprehensive encyclopedia of all things in the Star Wars universe made by the fans. A must read for any fan.

Vader Maker
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~dewar_s/Vader/Vader.htm
I stumbled across this site a few years back. This is an Australian site for fans who want to learn how to build thier very own Darth Vader costume. Pages and pages of detailed tips and photos of some really neat fan built costumes.

New York Jedi
http://www.nyjedi.com/
Thank God thier are Jedi in New York! I saw these guys at the NY comicon a few months back. They're a group of martial arts enthusiasts who study theater combat and stage mock lightsaber fights. They aslo have a section dedicated to constructing really cool scratch built lightsaber replicas.

eBay!
Of course eBay is on my list. I love looking there for all kinds of Star Wars stuff.

. The Star Wars Holiday Special is epically bad. It's amazingly bad. It's a special kind of bad that one doesn't just come across that often. Barely a year after the original Star Wars opened, the public was clamoring for something, anything, to tide them over until The Empire Strikes Back opened. However, it's safe to say they couldn't have conceived that this is what they'd get.

No doubt they'd like to forget it ever happened, but Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher all appear in this two-hour special, which focuses on Han and Chewbacca trying to get home to Chewbacca's family for the oh so imaginatively titled Wookie holiday, "Life Day." The 1970s were a time of many a variety show, featuring everyone from Sonny & Cher, to the Osmonds, to the Brady Bunch. However, seeing the likes of Art Carney and Harvey Korman do sketch comedy shtick in a Star Wars story is simply baffling. And you know you're through the looking glass when Bea Arthur (!) is playing the bartender at the Star Wars cantina, while singing a song (!!), and at one point dancing with Greedo (!!!).

We haven't even gotten to the part where Chewbacca's father appears to have virtual reality sex with a human woman, who tells him, "I am your fantasy. I am your experience. So experience me. I am your pleasure. Enjoy me." You might think that given all this, the Holiday Special would be a wall-to-wall laugh riot, however unintended most of those laughs are. And to be certain, there are some scenes that are hysterical. However, this special also manages to drag on to an amazing extent - the opening sequence, where Chewie's family speaks to each other in their language might only be a few minutes, but you'll swear it's a month of your life - allowing this special to achieve the distinction of being both ridiculous and tedious all at once.

Still, if nothing else, The Star Wars Holiday Special gave us Boba Fett. That's right, the ever-cool and popular bounty hunter made his first appearance here, about a year and a half before Empire opened. Okay, the animated segment of the special he appears in isn't all that good either, but at least it's an actual Star Wars style adventure, and not another sequence where Chewbacca's wife tries to emulate a cooking show. No, really... She does. All we can say about the Holiday Special is this; it makes Jar-Jar look like a good idea by comparison. Scary, huh?

TOP TEN THINGS I LEARNED FROM STAR WARS

When Darth Vader grabs you by the throat and lifts you off the ground, tell him where the damn Death Star plans are hidden!

Moisture farming sucks.

Everything Jawas sell is probably stolen, so keep the reciept if your droids run off.

When arguing with an old Jedi Knight in a bar, never ever pull your gun. You're just asking to be called "lefty" for the rest of your life.

Let Greedo ramble on and on about how he's going to kill you. It will allow you ample time to order another drink, finish your chicken fingers and then draw your gun quietly under the table and shoot him in his gut.

Holographic Chess rocks!

If you are buying a used space freighter, make sure it has plenty of hidden compartments for you and your crew to hide in. Screw the cupholders.

Stormtroopers can't see a thing because of the dark lenses in their helmets. That's how you can wander around the Death Star undetected and if they do run into you they can't shoot worth a damn.

Blowing up the Death Star with a single shot will totally get you some action!

R2-D2 never dies. Always make sure you have him on your team.

Yes, in early drafts lightsabers were wielded by pretty much everybody, hence some production art with Stormtroopers armed with them. But as the story was developed, Jedis were the only ones who carried that weapon.

1. After decades of banking on marquee names, it proved you could have a blockbuster hit with no stars -- except for the ILM-generated ones. (Guest star Alec Guinness does not qualify, because he was hardly a marquee name by 1977.) The actors were good in their roles (and became indelibly identified with them), but none had ever sold a ticket before. (Or do you recall rushing out to see that new Harrison Ford picture, "The Conversation"?)

Brian Damage
05-26-2007, 04:04 PM
2. It created the modern "franchise picture" -- a series of "event" films (usually with numerals in their titles) that either continued a particular story with some or all of the same characters, or repeated the concept with new characters (so the actors wouldn't have to receive star salaries from the start, unless the pictures became successful). Yes, that pre-"Jaws" blockbuster, "The Godfather," directed by Lucas' pal and "American Graffiti" patron Francis Ford Coppola, had already generated a "Part II" sequel/prequel in 1974 (only two years after the first!) that was superior to the original. But what was exceptional about the "Star Wars" series was that each installment became essential viewing -- unlike, say, "Jaws 2," "Jaws 3-D" and "Jaws: The Revenge" ("This time ... it's personal!"), all of which illustrated the common law of diminishing returns. Each episode of the first "Star Wars" trilogy took in more than $200 million -- astonishing, record-breaking figures in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Brian Damage
05-26-2007, 04:05 PM
3. It created the model for the modern major movie trilogy. From the beginning (or, OK, the middle), Lucas said that he envisioned the "Star Wars" saga as a "nonology," or a trilogy of trilogies, so the sequels didn't just dribble out endlessly -- as would later become the custom with spotty horror series such as "Halloween," "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Today, popular tent-pole pictures tend to come in groups of three: "Back to the Future," "The Matrix," "The Terminator" and "Spider-Man" (well, so far). Franchises such as the "Alien" and "Rambo" movies felt like they'd played themselves out after three installments and were only extended after a gap of five to 20 years as rather desperate afterthoughts. If these later offspring were children, they'd be considered "mistakes." (Although "Alien: Resurrection" wasn't terrible -- at least not compared with "Alien vs. Predator.")

Brian Damage
05-26-2007, 04:05 PM
4. Perhaps most significant of all, "Star Wars" showed that you could make even more from the merchandising rights on a movie than you could from the movie itself. Lucas negotiated a deal with 20th Century Fox that gave him not only final cut and 40 percent of the net but also ownership of all sequels and merchandising. That's what made Lucas a billionaire and built the ILM Empire. By the time of the late 1990s prequels, Lucas made an unprecedented tie-in deal with Pepsico (including Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC and Frito-Lay) estimated to be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 billion -- almost twice the North American domestic gross of Episodes I, II and III combined.

It should be noted that George Lucas and his buddy Brian DePalma ran simultaneous auditions for the movies they were working on (Lucas was doing Star Wars and DePalma was casting for Carrie) which explains why you see Amy Irving and William Katt on that list. In fact, Carrie Fisher almost got the role of Carrie, but she backed out because she didn't want to do the nude scenes required for the role. Sissy Spacek got that part.

Initially C3PO was going to be more of a wisecracking "used car salesman" as Lucas described it kind of character, which is probably why they wanted guys like Mel Blanc and Stan Freberg to do the voice. Luckily Freberg suggested that Lucas give Anthony Daniels the part, which is probably why 3PO became a more proper English droid..

I am probably one of the few people I know that will actually defend The Phantom Menace. Does it have it's flaws? Sure it does. I'm willing to admit that Jar-Jar was a mistake. But the film does a great job of showing how things were during the Old Republic when Jedi Knights were heroes.

I don't think i have met anyone who has hated all three of the "first trilogy" movies. I have met a number of people who were either too young to see epsiodes 4-6 or weren't even born then, so they are basing thier Star Wars experience on the new films.

talk about feeling old; my nephew is starting college in the fall and he wasn't even born yet when the first one came out.

I know what you mean. The other day I was having drinks with a much younger friend (who coicidently shares my date o birth) and when i mentioned the 30th Anniversary, she just looked at me blankly and said "I'm 24 old man."

If she wasn't so darn cute I would have ended the friendship right there.

The History Channel was able to break its own records as it finished in the No. 1 position in cable for May 28, with the premiere of "Star Wars: Legacy Revealed and "The Universe." "Star Wars" finished as the top original telecast in the history of the channel.

The record "Star Wars: Legacy Revealed" achieved was in the 25-54 demo as the NO. 1 original telecast, while in the 18-49 demo, it was the No. 1 show in that category ever. The show drew a strong 3.1 million viewers. For the night, it was No. 1 in the 8-11pm slot among the 25-54.

The Universe: Secrets of the Sun was also the best premiere for the History Channel, as it was top for both the 25-54 and 18-49.

Nancy Dubuc, Executive Vice President and General Manager, The History Channel, said, "We have kicked off the summer in a big way with these two hugely successful premieres. They're part of our plan to create specials and series that make history more active, entertaining and immediate. This is a powerful start."

Cool! "Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed" is a great special. It's a fascinating look at all the mythical elements of the Star Wars universe with lots of scholars, journalists and film makers discussing the movies. Very interesting stuff.

I believe History Channel is showing it again tonight.
