The scripts of sanford and son being similar to Amos and Andy. He wanted a little more input in the scripts and was tired of the bufoonery that was in the Scripts. Wow, that was news to me yesterday

Amos and Andy? Wow. I have never seen Amos and Andy so I can't see the comparison.

Yeah Amos and Andy was a black show the NAACP was not happy about at all

What exactly did he want? Fred to be in more dramatic stuff?

that I know. I am aware of the hatred towards that show. But, I have never seen it so that I can understand what Redd means by his comment. Is Redd saying this: "I feel Sanford and Son is just like Amos and Andy because it demeans black people" "It is racist" "it stereotypes", etc.

He said the scripts of Sanford and Son and it's characters were similar to the scripts of the Amos and Andy show and it's Characters

What the hell did he expect? It was a sitcom abt a man and his son who own and live in a junkyard. Did he not read the scripts? Or did he merely see $$$$$? I can see if it was a DRAMA abt a man who lived and owned a junkyard.

I remember vaguely abt Redd and his so-called fued with the show and its producers.

That's what happens with a lot of "stars" of sitcoms. They get a big head and all of a sudden want to take control of everything.

So damn true.
He sure took control of his last show, Royal Family (is that what is what called?)...he had a heart attack on the set and there went the show.

Looking at the episodes following his return (The Masquerade Party, Greatest Show in Watts, etc.) it would appear to me Redd lost that fight.

Honestly, this show became more cartoonish as time went on, so if Redd Foxx was claiming that the show was stereotypical before he left, what was it after? The earlier episodes had more of a sense or realism to them and the acting was better - to me after Redd Foxx quit, the show became more about the jokes than the character interactions.

I agree. The first 2-3 seasons were the best. Producer/Director Aaron Ruben (who also wrote and directed The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, CPO Sharkey and others) left after season 3, and that hurt the series as well.

Seasons 2 to 5 belongs in the comedy hall of fame, now season 1 and 6 that's a completely different story

most people would say that season 1 wasn't very good for these simple reasons....
NO ESTHER
NO JULIO
NO BUBBA
Most of season 1 was just Fred and Lamont....

It's true---they turned out to be the best supporting characters, especially Aunt Esther, IMO. When the show originally aired, though, no one knew what they were missing. :) But in retrospect, those characters are sorely missed.

Although, The Copper Caper is one of my all time favorite episodes. And there were still some great scenes in those episodes. Like when Lamont got stood up at the altar and all the relatives came back to the house and took their gifts back. It was hysterical when Fred wrapped all the food up in the table cloth and threw it outside at all the guests..."And don't say we didn't feed you!"

Plus Lamont seemed kind of mean and impatient with Fred.

That's true, I think its only those who watched the show in syndication feel that season 1 was not that fun to watch. If you came along during that time you wouldn't have known about Esther or Rollo so u would have just watched the show as it was at that time

I have to disagree about season 1, it is one of my favorites (even without Esther and Rollo). The episodes are really funny ("Coffins for Sale", "We Were Robbed", "The Suitcase Case"). It is probably my second favorite season, tied with season 3. Season 2, to me, is probably the best (same with Good Times). There were still funny episodes in 4-6, but season 6 has some really bad ones, most notably "The Will" and Fred's Church episode. "The Oddfather" was one of the worst, but I can't remember if that's from s. 5 or 6.

Agreed!! The Odd Father and the Hawaii trilogy were absolutely awful. Worst eps of the entire 6 seasons. Especially the Odd Father--it was unwatchable.

To me, Seasons 2-4 were the funniest and strongest. Season 2 introduced Aunt Esther, and of course, my favorite, Julio Fuentes (Gregory Sierra). :eyes:  :eyes: My two all-time favorite episodes: "Pops N Pals" and "The Merger". I was  at those!

I agree that the show became more "cartoonish" after Foxx returned from his holdout. Plenty of episodes that left your scratching your head wondering how in the world did they put this on TV.

The season when Redd came back the show was still good but not quite same comedy edge that it was getting the previous two seasons. Season 3 hits its peak with the supporting characters in play. Lamont rubbed me the wrong way in the first season where he would talk to Fred like a child and he began to somewhat act more as a parent and Fred the child. Season five it was beginning to go downhill and season six was the worse. It was more of a cartoon especially the Hawaii episodes. I did like the episode where Esther and Woody was adopting when Fred made his speech about the importance of a child having a healthy home environment. If we saw more episodes like that it would not have been as cartoonish as it was getting at the end.

I know things were different in the 70's, and I can't recall the details of this whole dispute issue, but I am wondering, was Redd threatened with breach of contract? I mean, he signed to do a show, you sign a contract, that is breach of contract if you don't show up to work.

yes he was.
they talked about it in the Norman Lear book. they Tell you a good amount of The dispute between Redd foxx and the producers and how it originated and how Demond Wilson Got Sued.
this is one of the few books(or if only Book) that talked about what when on Behind The scenes of Sanford And Son.
