View Full Version : Will Blue Ray and HD DVD''s phase out your regular DVDS? eddie146 05-22-2007, 12:25 PM Will all the regular dvds u bought in the last 10 years go the way of video cassettes? eventually this has to happen??? I see so many regular DVD prices plummeting. BuddyHinton 05-23-2007, 02:35 AM The difference here is that standard dvds play in my HD player but video cassettes didn't play in my DVD player. I've picked up a few titles here and there on HD; my "must own movies" (like the Last Samurai) but in general I think the HD/Blu releases have been mediocre at best. How can you try and infuse a new medium with movies like "The Mummy" instead of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is comical at best. Where's Jurassic Park and Back to the Future? Nah, we really wanted Scooby Doo and the Scorpion King. Ant-Lox 05-23-2007, 01:01 PM I don't see Blu ray's taking over DVD ever, unless the price of the players and discs come down. DVD is sort of in the same boat as VHS, but DVD is more versitile that VHS ever could be, and it's cheaper. I think DVD will be the choice format for many years to come. dakert 05-25-2007, 11:52 PM I still dont know what Blu Ray is and as long as the dvds come in clear. I am a happy camper sigmapi30 05-30-2007, 09:30 PM i am there with ya, i dont know what BluRay is either. ive seen them in stores but just figured they were like mini dvds. I wouldn't be to sure about that. When I started collecting movies on VHS back in the late 80's early 90's I was told that the VHS would last me a lifetime....nothing was better. Well DVDs came out and now they expect me to start over my collection. I don't know if Blue Ray will replace regular DVDs but I gurantee you something will eventually and it always happens sooner than you think. Would you mind explaining what Blue Ray is? eddie146 05-30-2007, 11:31 PM http://g-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QSWM8EeLL._SS500_.jpg eddie146 05-30-2007, 11:34 PM http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51mn75SmfJL._SS500_.jpg they are coming to eventually wipe your current dvd collection. TVFactFan 05-31-2007, 01:07 AM http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51mn75SmfJL._SS500_.jpg they are coming to eventually wipe your current dvd collection. Do you mind explaining why HD DVD and Blue TV will wpe out my DVD collection? Ireneparalegal 05-31-2007, 01:11 AM Anyone remember laser discs? SBTB Geek 05-31-2007, 02:46 AM I'm waiting for the day a TV series is released on Blu-ray. If I had to guess, 24, Lost, or one of those HBO shows will be one of the first ones. Heck, even some classics like I Love Lucy and [modern] classics like Seinfeld might one day be released in HD since they were shot on film, unfortunately though on 4x3 versus 16x9. eddie146 05-31-2007, 08:35 AM Do you mind explaining why HD DVD and Blue TV will wpe out my DVD collection? because eventually high definition will replace everything, you know in 2 years all stores will only sell hd dvds and then in the next 7 to 10 years your non hd dvds will be dated. technology prevails. eddie146 05-31-2007, 08:39 AM it wasn't too long ago, when there was one aisle of dvds and 8 rows of vhs tapes and people were saying dvds won't overcome vhs tapes. history will repeat itself. cds over records dvds over vhs hd dvd or blu ray disc over regular dvds eddie146 05-31-2007, 08:43 AM Would you mind explaining what Blue Ray is? Blu-ray is a new, high-capacity disc format for DVD capable of storing and playing high-definition content images in your home theatre setup. Using advanced, blue laser technology, a Blu-ray disc is densely layered and read by a thinner laser than conventional standard DVDs. This means that a Blu-ray disc can store over five times the amount of data that a standard DVD can, resulting in unsurpassed picture and audio quality in the home. If you've ever seen a high-definition TV broadcast on an HDTV, then you know that an HD picture is more vivid and incredibly sharp. This stunning level of detail and resolution is impossible to reproduce on a standard DVD, which has a maximum resolution of 480p (or 480 lines). In contrast, Blu-ray goes beyond even HDTV broadcasts 720p capabilities and has the capacity to store all of the data needed for high-definition video, so it is able to reproduce the high-definition images at a resolution of 1080p. The result is that Blu-ray brings your favorite home entertainment to life with more clarity and higher quality than ever before. In addition, the extra disc space means there's room for significantly more content and special features. When you buy a DVD movie, you're usually not just getting the movie--you're also getting the extra features that come along with it, like director's commentary and making-of documentaries (depending on the disc, of course). With Blu-ray, there's the possibility for previously unheard-of special features. Imagine, for example, interactive content, like a director on the screen explaining the shooting of a scene while the scene is playing in the background, or the ability to dynamically deliver new content to your Blu-ray player using the internet, a feature called BD-Live, such as new movie trailers or additional language tracks. Thanks to the greatly enhanced audio/video quality and additional content capability, Blu-ray is a huge step forward in the DVD home theatre viewing experience. http://www.perfecthidef.com/images/pic_blurayvs.jpg this from amazon. i did not write this. eddie146 05-31-2007, 08:49 AM also from amazon. What Does This Mean for My Current DVD Collection? The Blu-ray players coming out will be backward compatible and should play your current discs. The bottom line is, you can probably upgrade to a Blu-ray player and still enjoy your current DVDs. But you should double-check the particular model you are considering, just to be certain that it will play standard DVDs. eddie146 05-31-2007, 08:56 AM remember the hd dvds and blu ray discs won't do their thing unless you have a hd dvd player or hd tv. but eventually in due time we will all own hd players and tvs. once the prices come down!! as much as I hate this, you know in a couple of years down the road a full hd takeover will take an effect. eddie146 05-31-2007, 09:09 AM http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/518HDEPDCRL._SS500_.jpg eddie146 05-31-2007, 10:12 AM http://www.supermanhomepage.com/images/smallville6/s5-hddvd.jpg eddie146 05-31-2007, 03:09 PM Anyone remember laser discs? yes true about laser disc, but the laser discs were too large and over priced and the laser disc system player was non adaptable. Todays upgraded blu discs and hd dvds are becoming more affordable and suited and compatable for hd tv. as laser disc world offered no suffiency. coffield3 06-01-2007, 06:39 AM Exactly like when we had vhs then dvd came out i got rid of most of my vhs videos for space.Gee they are always bringing new and cooler things out arent they! well i wont be getting rid of my now dvds as i have tons but then again ill want my favorite movies on blue ray!! oh geez!  eddie146 06-01-2007, 02:14 PM xbox 360 also play hd-dvds. another big reason for the takeover, and ps3 are giving free sample blu ray discs movies to play on their system. hd revoltution is coming fast! kramer 06-20-2007, 09:17 AM Yes eventually Blue ray and/or hd dvd (depends who wins the format war) will replace regular dvds, just like dvd replaced vhs. The prices are high now but they will come down. When dvd's first came out they were a lot more expensive than vhs. People are comparing the format war blue ray and hd dvd to the old vhs vs beta in the 80's. There is a player that will play both blue ray and hd compusa.com (www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=344302&Pn=LG_Super_Multi_Blue_HD_Player) |
