Hopefully someone with a cat like mine can answer this.

Whenever I feed my cat and give her fresh water, she smells whats inside and then scratches at the floor as if to cover the food and water. She does this for about a minute then she leaves. Eventually she goes and eats but what I want to know is what's up with the scratching?

Whenever my cat does that, it means he finds whatever he's trying to 'bury' repulsive smelling/looking and won't eat it.

You do realize that they are trying to take over the world, right?

 I have two cats, and one of them does the scratching thing near the water dish as well. I have no idea what it means either

We have 3 cats, and whenever they don't like what is in the water/food dish, they mess up the towel that is underneath the dishes so everything is in disarray. We lowly humans bow to our cats. ;)

I've owned probably about 86 cats in my lifetime (currently have 5). My brown tabby will do that sometimes, and I had a Maine Coon that did it all the time.

That's why ya gotta love 'em - to me, it's basically saying, "I ain't gonna eat this sh*t!"

Cats, unlike dogs are much more particular about their food. A dog will eat anything - including rotting things. Cats won't. If you're ever not sure about leftovers - let the cat sniff a bit. If he goes to eat it, it's o.k, if not - or if they do the "litterbox cover up" routine, it's time to toss it! ;)

My current Maine Coon does the scraping by the water dish (never the food dish tho) and I've never figured that one out myself. He also always has a coughing fit after drinking water. I've asked my vet about it and he's stumped too. Ahhh the mysteries of feline life...

My Maine Coon would also drink from the toilet, but before he'd go into the bowl, he'd wet his front paws with the water, scrape the sides of the bowl and then drink.

Odd little characters aren't they?

My cat does that too sometimes, and one of my friends told me that she does that when she's eaten enough for the time being.

My cat does that every once in a while, its usually when I give him a certian flavor of canned cat food, so I try to remember not to buy that flavor. He doesn't do it with his dry cat food. I've ended up giving our little beagle, the cats rejects. That dog thinks he part cat anyway so he usually eats it.

I have two cats, and one of them does the scratching thing sometimes. Other times, he'll come in the living room with the fur on his chin dripping wet. I'll ask him if he's been swimming in his water dish again, lol.

If the scratching means that my cat doesn't like that paticular food..oh well! She's going to be scratching for a while. I really don't have the time to be in the market forever wondering which type she likes. Even though I love my baby....she's going to have to get used to it. :) I give her Meow Mix Indoor Formula and an occasional treat which is usually wet food(Sheba, 9 lives, Fancy Feast)and all she does is lick the juice from the meat. When I get back the food is still there and it's all dry.

Also, my cat likes to dip her paw in the water dish and lick her paw. Wtf?! Talk about picky! But like I said, that's ma baby!

 One of our cats, Jasmine, has been caught more than once perched up on the ironing board. My mom keeps a little cup for the water to use in the iron. We kept catching Jazz dipping her paw in the water and drinking it. Thank goodness, the iron was off and unplugged when she did it.

;) Thanks. I do help the local SPCA as much as I can also. I have a lot of friends who are huge animal lovers. One girlfriend rescues rottis and boxers.

If I had my way, I'd also have some ducks, a miniature horse, pygmy goats and alpacas. It's a good thing we never bought a farm, but if I ever hit the lottery.....watch out!

lol - I know what you mean, one of mine drinks differently from any cat I've seen. Since he was a kitten, when he drinks, he soaks the floor on the other side of the water dish and his entire face. I can always tell after he's had a drink - it looks like he stood out in the rain looking up!

Mine do that too - or they'll "test" a food with their paw and lick it.

I had one calico that used to fish the ice cubes out of your drink. Funniest thing I ever saw, was one night an old boyfriend was sleeping over. I had just happened to open my eyes to roll over when I see this cat standing on the nighttable, fishing the ice out of the glass of water he kept on the stand.

Never said a word to him....it was a secret between me and the cat! ;)

Needless to say, the boyfriend didn't last!

well, since we're on the topic of cats, I'm going to be getting my first cat pretty soon and I had a question: How long does it take to teach them to use the litterbox (and how do you teach them)? Thanks! I'm getting a Siamese kitten for my birthday!

Congrats on getting a new baby first of all!

As for litter box training, it doesn't take long at all. When I got my first cat she was 4 weeks old. Yes she was young but her mother was dying so we had to take them. Anyways, whenever I noticed that she was getting ready to go pee or poop(they usually back up and start to squat arching their back), I would put her in the litter box and she got the hang of it in one day. She'd scratch away and play in the litter box and I'd let her so she could get the use of the litter box and she did. It's not hard at all! Just be consistant.

Siamese cats are wonderful....very smart, playful and really vocal. We have a Himalayan which is half Siamese and half Persian. She's a handful, but what a joy!

Thanks! I'm used to dogs, and even my old border collie who was really smart took a good month to get trained to go outside, but everyone always said cats were easier.

I want to get her now, but I thought it'd be better to wait until school was out so I could be home with her more often, so when I get her in a few weeks, I'm sure I'll have more questions :)

it could be the chlorine smell. Do you have well water or city water? if you have well water, then it's not the chlorine. if you have city water, try a new bowl with bottled water for a couple of days and see if it stops.

No problem. You can ask away any time! And yes that's a good idea to take her in after schools out. It's good to be there for your kitty. :)

My kitten loves running water. Even though I put out fresh drinking water for her every day, she prefers to drink from the bathroom sink. She follows me into the bathroom, then jumps up into the sink and starts digging furiously at the porcelin until I turn on the water. She bats at the stream of water, then she drinks from it. Strange cat! I kind of figured, by trying to dig, she was trying to turn the water on.

Yes my cat does that too he will even put his front paws in the water while he drinks.

Actually you normally don't need to train a cat at all. It's a natural instinct for them to use sand, dirt (or in the case of today's pet, a litterbox with clay). It always cracks me up when I see an ad saying the kittens are litter trained - of course they are!

The only problem I've ever had was trying to litter train a rabbit. Apparently they can be trained fairly easily to use a litterbox, but when you've got 4 cats along with it, it's nearly impossible! I'd put a separate smaller litterbox out for the rabbit, and the cats would use it putting the rabbit right off of it.

I ended up training her to use a certain blanket that I would just wash daily. Wasn't the best, but better than nothing.
