...she always seemed to have the weekend off. When she worked at Central Perk, Rachel always seemed to be planning a weekend getaway or a trip for the Thanksgiving Day weekend, etc.

In real life, I would think she would have to work at least one weekend day. Some waitresses work both. Yes, I know, it's only a show and it's not reality, but you never heard her complain about having to work the weekend.

Hell, I work a Monday-Friday job and even I have to work an occasional Saturday!

"Friends" seemed to focus more on the groups after work life.

Monica was a chef for a number of seasons, yet she seemed to have oodles of free time.

I know a few people who are chefs, and they work nonstop.

I am not a Friends fan at all. I seen one episode. It was ok. However, I have read enough abt the show to know that the apartments/flats/whatever you call them are quite expensive and no waitress job alone could pay the rent, plus all the fine clothes, plus all the weekends off, etc.

Rachel was the least convincing waitress in the history of TV. Enough said.

And yet she inspired a whole generation of girls to come to New York City and wait tables and screw up my order.

Well it was explained on the show, that Monica grandmother gave Monica the apartment and it was rent controlled so that's how she and Rachel were able to afford the apartment. Also there was a episode where the landlord found out that Monica was living there instead of her grandmother.

True, I never thought about that.

Now, as for Joey and Phoebe, they worked in professions where employment was erratic, so I never questioned why they were always around. And Chandler changed jobs a few times, which explained some of his being around.

I know, it's not reality, but it's fun to pick your favorite shows apart sometimes. Just fer fun.

True, but I think the thing that we're forgetting is that Rachel had never worked a day before in her LIFE. She was supposed to be a terrible waitress. Then, after she had learned everything she needed to know, she was STILL a terrible waitress because she just didn't care that much.

At least she admitted it.

Well, she's a waitress, so she probably gets to pick her availability and just says she's not available on weekends. She can still work a 40 hour week to be full-time. That's 8 hours a day M-F and she hangs with her friends because they hangout in the coffee shop a little too much.

well her boss (gunther) was in love with her so i'd imagine she'd be able to get out of weekend work pretty easily based on how gunther acts around rachel.

I always thought that in the final episode, Rachel should have just run off with Gunther. The poor guy loved her from afar all those years - it was the least she could have done for him.;)

Rachel was not a very good waitress anyway. And I am sure Gunther would have given her any day off whenever she asked for one.

I know asking questions like "Rachel is a waitress, but..." are inherently ridiculous because after all, it is "just a show" and we all know that TV sitcom characters don't live in the real world, but asking questions like that is what this board is all about.

And oh yes, Gunther would have given Rachel anything. I still say she should have run off with him in the finale. I was sick of Ross and Rachel over the last few seasons the way the writers handled them.

Yeah, that was one thing that bugged me about this show is that the whole gang, not just Rachel, were always able to take time off work at a moments notice. Yes, I know it was just a show but at every job I've ever worked they wanted you to give a few weeks notice!!
