View Full Version : Funniest facial expressions on TV
catlover79 05-15-2007, 07:40 PM Bewitched had some of the funniest faces on TV! Dick York especially had the big eyes that would bug out and with his rubbery face could make people laugh without saying a word. Alice Pearce and Marion Lorne also had funny facial expressions and killer timing. I read a review that likened all three actors to "human cartoon characters", in a positive way!!
Over at Barney Miller, Hal Linden had very funny double takes and expressions as he was reacting to other characters on the show. Abe Vigoda and Jack Soo were the definition of deadpan, and so is David Hyde Pierce of Frasier.
Those are all the ones that I can think of at the moment. Who did I miss?
TripperFan 05-15-2007, 08:35 PM I loved Jack Soo also.
Carroll O'Connor was a classic as was "Ross" and "Chandler" on Friends. ;)
Zoneboy 05-15-2007, 08:40 PM Fred Sanford when he got a good look at Esther.
Kramer from Seinfeld had some pretty funny facial expressions.
comedyfreak 05-16-2007, 05:17 PM Aunt Esther on Sanford and Son also had some good facial expressions of her own.
Lucy Ricardo
Samantha Stephens
Jack Tripper (John Ritter) had some very funny facial expressions on 3's Company.
Kristen 05-18-2007, 01:51 AM I would have to say Bea Arthur. Have you seen some of the looks Dorothy gives Rose on The Golden Girls?! They're perfect, and a lot of times, she doesn't even have to say a word! I'm also surprised no one's mentioned Dick Van Dyke, he had some great physical comedy as well as facial expressions.

Bea Arthur had some pretty funny facial expressions on Maude as well. She could deliver a put down without even having to say a word!!
Marvo301 05-19-2007, 02:17 AM Jon Volstead and Tony Papenfuss (Darryl and Darryl ) on "Newhart" who never spoke a word until the final episode were absolute masters at communicating through facial expressions and hand gestures!
Yooch 05-19-2007, 03:31 AM Nick Yamana, Archie Bunker, Edith Bunker, Al Bundy, Mike Stivic, Maude, Dorothy Potrillo, Howard Cunningham, George Lopez, Brian Hackett, Lucy Ricardo, Rob Petrie, Jethro Bodine, Ginger Grant, Lamont Sanford.....to name some.
The characters I've named--they are way different from each other, but one thing they all have in common is how expressive they are in their facial features, escpecially their reactions to what they see and hear.
I'd also like to add: Ralph Kramden, Jack Tripper, Chandler Bing and Cosmo Kramer
88survivor 05-19-2007, 10:30 AM I always thought Scott Baio had very funny expressions...when his eyes are wide and his face goes blank when he is upset(CIC, Happy Days). I always laugh when he laughs, too, not to mention his goofy smile...it is just so funny. Looks exactly like an anime...I tell you.
James 05-19-2007, 01:53 PM I'll have to nominate Larry Appleton on Perfect Strangers. He was HILARIOUS when he was uptight! :rotflmao:
GoldenGirlsFan92 05-19-2007, 03:13 PM I would have to say Bea Arthur. Have you seen some of the looks Dorothy gives Rose on The Golden Girls?! They're perfect, and a lot of times, she doesn't even have to say a word! I'm also surprised no one's mentioned Dick Van Dyke, he had some great physical comedy as well as facial expressions.
I agree. She had Great expressions.

Larry! I can't believe I forgot to put him on my list. I remember the look on his face, and Balki's for that matter, whenever Larry announced that he 'had a plan'. The looks on both their faces forbode a non-verbal 'Oh oh, look out!'
catlover79 02-23-2009, 09:52 PM Larry! I can't believe I forgot to put him on my list. I remember the look on his face, and Balki's for that matter, whenever Larry announced that he 'had a plan'. The looks on both their faces forbode a non-verbal 'Oh oh, look out!'
 Whether he was going after a promotion, a raise, or Jennifer, nothing stood in his way!!
andress_jade 02-24-2009, 05:14 PM I can't believe nobody has mentioned Larry Hagman as Tony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie, he gave some of the funniest expressions after Jeannie did something or said something she wasn't supposed to.
Larry had great comedic timing and well as being a great physical comedian.
So did Bill Daily, he had some of the funniest expressions and gestures as Roger Healey, he was a character!
Don Knotts was the same way as Barney Fife. He had some of the funniest expressions and gestures. Even when he played Ralph Furley on Three's Company he had some hilarious expressions. :D
I also think Brad Garrett as Robert Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond had some great expressions. He had that face that no matter what he did, you would get a laugh. He was just that funny. Brad Garrett has always called himself a combination of Greg Brady and Herman Munster and with some of his expressions, I have to agree! :)
TripperFan 02-24-2009, 06:47 PM .
80sTrivia 02-24-2009, 07:13 PM I would have to say Bea Arthur. Have you seen some of the looks Dorothy gives Rose on The Golden Girls?! They're perfect, and a lot of times, she doesn't even have to say a word!
Exactly what I was going to say! Bea could say more with one raised eyebrow than most actresses could convey with an entire script of dialogue!
steevo 02-24-2009, 07:44 PM On Three's Company, I always loved the facial expressions of the roommates when they would overhear a conversation and jump to the wrong conclusion about it. Janet was always the best one at it.
On Home Improvement, Jill Taylor's gaping mouth expression after Tim's misadventure with the dishwasher in season one was priceless.
catlover79 02-24-2009, 09:26 PM I'll have to nominate Larry Appleton on Perfect Strangers. He was HILARIOUS when he was uptight! :rotflmao:
Those angry faces he made were absolutely priceless. He always looked like he was about to explode. You could almost see the smoke coming out of his ears!

Al Bundy
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 02-24-2009, 10:08 PM Mr. Furley would get some funny faces when he was misunderstanding something, or scared. Also, Mr. Roper's face after he made a joke about Helen and turned to the camera. :p
comedyfreak 02-26-2009, 10:34 AM Elizabeth Montgomery had great facial expressions. I read that she would stand in front of the camera making different faces and they would pick and use the ones they wanted.

Good call!
I just could picture his eyes gauging out ready to kill Balki!

She did indeed. Some of her icy stares at Darrin whenever she was mad at him cracked me up.
comedyfreak 02-28-2009, 09:40 AM She did indeed. Some of her icy stares at Darrin whenever she was mad at him cracked me up.
I knew that would get your attention, LOL. I loved her expressions, Marlo Thomas was another actress great at facial expressions.
ekkostar 02-28-2009, 09:54 AM Cliff Huxtable. Was there ever a time where he wasn't trying to be exaggeratedly smooth only to come off as completely goofy?
wkomorow 02-28-2009, 01:35 PM Mr. Granger when he said I refuse
Dick Solomon when he declared I have a plan
Fraser Crane was a master of the eye brow lift
Ricky Ricardo's bulging eyes were also classic
mrsmatthewperry 02-28-2009, 08:08 PM Well I agree with Chandler and Ross
Did Mama from Mama's Family have facial exspressions?
Harry and Dan had some on Night Court and so did Bull!!
McGillicuddy 03-01-2009, 12:10 PM Lucy, her eyes would widen, when she came up with an outrageous idea to get out of a jam!
Lucy, her eyes would widen, when she came up with an outrageous idea to get out of a jam!
Even better than that, when her ideas were about to fail and Ricky would give her some bad news that she wasn't expecting, her face would turn sour and her lip would curl up and she would say, "Eeeewwwwww!" The writers would call that her 'spider face'. They loved it so much that they would put it in the script and she would use it once per episode.
catlover79 11-06-2009, 10:26 PM Rewatching Perfect Strangers, I have to say I think Mark Linn-Baker had the funniest facial expressions on TV this side of Dick York (Bewitched). Heeeeeeeeeeere's Larry!!!!!

Those are great pics! If you want to see more Mark Linn Baker facial expressions you should watch the movie "My Favorite Year".

You know, I've never seen that movie. I probably should.
Marvo301 11-06-2009, 10:48 PM You know, I've never seen that movie. I probably should.
Yes you should! This is a great movie. Peter O'Toole was spectacular as a drunken matinee idol set to guest star on a TV variety show. Mark Linn Baker was great as a junior writer of the variety show assigned to babysit O'Toole's character and keep him sober until showtime. Bill Macey from "Maude" also does some good work in this movie in a supporting role as one of the other writers.

You're welcome!
big bertha 11-07-2009, 02:55 AM Carol Burnett had some of the funniest looks on tv! She was great. How about Don Adams from Get Smart? Or how about Frank Sutton from Gomer Pyle when Gomer would do something stupid and he would roll his eyes at Gomer. Pretty funny.

:yeahthat
Fred Mertz's facial expressions on I Love Lucy when something goes wrong, usually due to Lucy's scheming, was an all-time laughfest. William Frawley was an underrated comedic actor.
Will and Grace Fanatic 11-14-2009, 06:16 PM Lucy of course but also Debra messing as Grace Adler on "will and Grace" has some great ones.
Retro4Life 11-14-2009, 08:25 PM You can't leave good old Archie Bunker out of this list. That guy had the greatest reactions expressions I've ever seen! :)

Sid Caesar (esp. when he was doing those crazy dialects)
Dayton Allen (his "Whyyyy not?" character on Steve Allen's show)
Danny Thomas
Granny (Irene Ryan on The Beverly Hillbillies)
McGillicuddy 11-18-2009, 09:44 PM Well I agree with Chandler and Ross
