I think that an Advice thread might be a good idea. People can certainly still make their own personal threads asking for advice, but others might feel more comfortable posting in this thread.

Here's my dilemma. One of my closest friends keeps talking about these people that I don't even know. She knew this family years ago, and a few month's ago, she got back in touch with them.

At first, it was kind of interesting as this family is sort of wild, but I've had my fill of hearing about them. My friend will say to me, "I have the biggest scoop about "Jessica"!...then she goes on and on.

My friend is busy with kids and a job, so we don't get to spend much time together. The other night, we talked on the phone for an hour. At least half that time was spent talking about the people I've never even met.

I've tried changing the subject, but she goes right back to that boring topic. She really thinks that I'm interested. My husband told me that I should just lay it on the line to my friend, and tell her that her new "old" friends are monopolizing our conversations...and that I'm not interested in them. I don't know if I could do that. She doesn't have e:mail. If she did, that might be easier.

well there's this girl at school her name is samantha and she's really cute and nice. She's got a lot of friends. We used to talk in 8th grade but now she just knows who I am and she probably doesen't remember the 8th grade all too much. But now I can't keep my eyes off her. Whenever I look at her I just feel like coming up and talking to her or just kissing her. Sometimes she looks back at me. I make jokes in this class I have her for out lound everyone laughs ever her which makes me feel good. I really love & care about her but it's really hard to talk to her. She's a quiet mysterious girl. Even outside of class she's like that. I know it sounds really stupid but someone please tell me what to do. It's really hard to talk to a girl like her usually it ain't a problem for me. but there's just something about her.....

It is so much easier for others to say what they would do in a certain situation, but really, I feel you need to be "curt" with her and just say, "oh well, sounds like you don't like them. Can't change how you feel. So, what are your plans this weekend?"

The 8th grade was, what, 1? 2? years ago for you (going by the DOB in yer profile). Most people usually can remember a couple years back minimum. Heck, the other day someone recognized me, and they hadn't seen me since I was in the 4th grade - and they were in the 1st.

Perhaps you can just approach her as you would any other girl. Try to think of a reason to talk to her, a homework assignment or something like that. You'll be nervous, but it won't last too long. She may surprise you and be interested in you back. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. :)

One day after I moved back here (I moved back here in mid-2003, and this occurred in late 2003, when I'd been 18 for a while), I was at the mall with my mom. We were just walking down the corridor to go to Suncoast, minding our own business. I passed this lady sitting on the bench that was in the middle of the corridor, and she looked really familiar. She saw me too and started looking at me.

All of a sudden, it clicked. "Hey, Margo!"

Margo was the name of the first teacher I EVER had. I started preschool in 1987, and she stopped working with me in May of 1988. I never saw her after that, until that fateful day in November of 2003, over 15 1/2 years later. So it was pretty amazing for me to just randomly do that.

I wish I had some good advice for you Janice. I think that you might want to let her know what you think. Let her know that you feel that she's monopolizing the conversation about friends of hers that you don't know. It's hard to sometimes tell people things because by doing so the person might be hurt or get upset. It's not fair to you though that she spends so much time talking about them to you. I had a friend that used to (years ago) put me on hold for periods of time like 5 or 10 minutes. I finally had to nicely explain that I didn't feel that I should be on the phone if I'm just going to be put on hold constantly for minutes at a time. I know that's not the same thing, but that's the best example I can come up with at the moment.
Thanks Jen, and yeah, being put on hold is very annoying. I don't wait long now before I hang up. They can call me back. Sometimes, I don't answer just for payback.
As for my friend, I guess I'm going to have to tell her. It's just so hard at this point. Part of the problem is that I let it go on this long, so she REALLY thinks I'm interested, lol. In the beginning, I was, but now I dread it when she starts in. I wonder if she's bending their ears about me.

How do you get through to someone who is hard headed?

There is this lady that comes here once every 2 to 3 weeks to do a cleaning. We clean on a daily basis, but have a 'thorough' cleaning when she comes. Her English isn't very good. She is constantly saying that she will come on a Tuesday, because that's her best day to come here. Half the time though she calls that same day and says she can't come. For awhile she wasn't even calling she would just not show up at all. I did my best to explain to her that I needed her to call if she's not going to come. She's gotten better about calling, but it's still at the last minute. I've asked her to please call a day in advance if she's not going to come so that if I have plans I don't have to cancel them thinking that she's going to come when she's not going to. I was going to go to the store today and buy my mother a Mother's day card, but I canceled it thinking the lady was going to come. I even called her last night to make sure she was coming. Because I canceled my trip I can't uncancel it. My transportation has to be set up a day in advance, unless I want to take a cab which is even less reliable than the other transportation. I'm frustrated because it seems like she's taking her job for granted. I tried talking to my mother about it, but she doesn't want to fire the lady. It's not that I dislike the lady, it just bothers me that she only sometimes comes as planned. She's also tried claiming that she will come later in the week such as on a Friday and then doesn't show up either. :wallbang
Just fire her. It'll be hard, but you've tryed talking to her and she's not listening.

The best way to handle that is to be honest. Why suffer through a phone call when you don't have to? Besides, you are in no position to be talking for hours on a phone young lady! Get bed rest!!!

Tough one. I agree with Courtnee, she deserves to be fired. The only thing is that is appears to be your mother's decision. I think you have to convince your mother somehow that this is really an inconvenience to you and a huge pain in your butt. I think if your mother has a real clear picture of what this woman is putting you through, she may reconsider her stance.
The woman must be quite the cleaner to get away with such unprofessional behavior. What a shame, what she's putting you through Jenny. :(

But try taking out the battery and putting it back in.

I don't get it! I drink a lot of water, I avoid sugary sodas, I work out, and my body fat is getting to be a lower number everytime. However, I need advice on how to get rid of the stomach/ab flab I have. :( Only very few people have told me I have lost weight, so it is obviously NOT very obvious or is only so minimal that it's not noticeable. HELP!!! Anymore ideas? I want to realistically get rid of this stomach flab. Any ideas other than what I mentioned above??

You are what my Step Aerobics instructors refers to as a "skinny-fat person." You're thin, but if you don't work out, you have more fat than muscle in you.

Maybe its just excess skin that hasn't readjusted to your new body. If you lose weight at a exceedingly fast rate, the skin is going to hang. Then it could take year(s) for your skin to snap back. That's why its best to do it slow, a pound or two a week, etc.
And you shouldn't rely on comments from people on your weight loss. Some people may think that's a touchy subject and not want to even acknowledge it. See, they may think by mentioning your weight loss then they are also saying you had a weight problem. And what if you weren't trying to lose weight? That person would feel embarrassed for even bringing it up.
So The important thing is that you keep up what you are doing and not get discouraged.

That's the thing I mentioned in my post - I am not losing weight at an exceedingly fast rate. I workout, but I also tend to eat a lot of sugary desserts. That is probably contributing to my slow metabolism.

And you shouldn't rely on comments from people on your weight loss. Some people may think that's a touchy subject and not want to even acknowledge it. See, they may think by mentioning your weight loss then they are also saying you had a weight problem. And what if you weren't trying to lose weight? I am not solely relying on others' comments. The portion where I do rely on them is because then I can see if it's at a degree where it's noticeable around people I see often. I talked about this with my sister in December, and she even told me, "You are? I can't tell."

So The important thing is that you keep up what you are doing and not get discouraged.
I suppose so.

Now, back to my advice-seeking question - I heard to drink a lot of water and workout is good to have a good physical body, so why isn't this working too much?

Loosing weight, does not happen over night; you have to really work hard at it. I started walking 7 days a week for over an hour a day..and I gradually lost the weight, but it did not happen quickly; it took me nearly a year to reach my ideal.
But....this isn't overnight. This has been the situation since January 2006...not 2007. Over a year ago. *sigh*

I see about the daily walking. There are times, especially last summer, where I walked daily, but I gotta make it a priority on that, I suppose.

This may sound strange, but I didn't think it worthy of a thread of its own. Anyway, oh gosh, 10 years ago (eek...that long??), I shut my finger in my car door, split it open, and got stitches. There's a scar on the tip (well, the pad more than the tip).

With this job of mine, I do TONS of cutting. This never happened before until I started doing mass cutting...my finger goes numb. It's my pointer finger on my right hand, so it's in the scissors all the time. And it doesn't just go numb and then comes back; it goes numb for daaaaays. It feels almost like what it feels like to touch a swollen body part...you can feel the touch, but it's very dulled and sensitive. But it's not swollen, I just really can't feel anything. Is it nerve damage? And did any of this even make sense? lol

It's really bugging me.

Ok, I don't normally ask advice about guys or anything, but I feel kinda stuck.

There's a guy I work with that I really like. He's funny, nice, sarcastic, smart as hell, and soooo cute. I mean, this guy is basically my type. He has the best sense of humor and isn't afraid to say random stuff to get a laugh--I LOVE that. Plus, well...he's cute! There's a bit of an age difference, though (he's 18, I'm 24...is that weird? I honestly don't mind it because he seems a lot older than he is).

Anyway, I heard on the grape vine that he's not working there for long--he's planning on saving up enough money to go to Europe (he wants to live there, I guess). So, he's probably not going to stick around. Not to mention, he probably doesn't like me any way (he knows I have a crush on him, though).

Do you think I should just drop this crush before I get my heart broken? :( It feels like it might amount to nothing, but at the same time he's such an interesting guy that I wouldn't mind pursuing him at all.

I don't think that age difference is too far from each other. Now, if you were in your late 20s, I think that would be rather odd. However, a six-year difference from your mid-20s isn't that far in age. I had an old roommate who was a childhood friend. When she was 23, she was dating this 17-18-year-old guy because he was quite mature. I would say to go by the maturity factor rather than the age factor. :)

Anyway, I heard on the grape vine that he's not working there for long--he's planning on saving up enough money to go to Europe (he wants to live there, I guess). So, he's probably not going to stick around.
I say if you enjoy his company, Kristel, then he might be worth dating.

Not to mention, he probably doesn't like me any way (he knows I have a crush on him, though).
Well, how do you know that without him telling you? Do you have any valid proof that he has actually said he is not interested interested in you? If your answers to these questions are "no," then I would say to just go for it! Try asking him out to coffee and see what happens from there. :D

Do you think I should just drop this crush before I get my heart broken? :( It feels like it might amount to nothing, but at the same time he's such an interesting guy that I wouldn't mind pursuing him at all.
Well, the heartbroken scenario is always going to be a toughie. It's always going to be a risk. I say it's better to find out than sit and think about "unknown," don't you think?

I don't know...I have to think of something to say! He was mentioning he still hasn't seen the Spiderman movie yet and that he wanted to see it (and he also quickly asked me if I've seen it yet  Is he dropping a hint?!) I'm so bad at this guy stuff

Thanks again for your words, Mona...means a lot to me! :bighug:
Just ask him if he wants to go with you!

I was going to ask earlier in the week, but with computer problems I didn't really get a chance.

My sister was invited to a birthday party. She has very few friends. The friend who invited her to the party lives in the complex. My sister was invited and then basically 'uninvited'. The way it was done was pretty cold, not to mention it's not right, imo, to invite someone and then uninvite them.

My sister's friend has been talking about her party since last Dec. her birthday was at the end of May. She didn't celebrate on her actual birthday though. My sister was invited ahead of time. My sister was told more than once that she could go to the party. Her friend even came over a week before to make sure my sister bought her a gift for her birthday party.

Well, the day before the party, my sister went over to the girl's house. My sister was given an invitation. Everything 'appeared' to be ok. Then I get a phone call saying that there is a stipulation. The girl's mother informed me that the only way my sister could go to the party (which was being held on a Friday) is if my mother went with my sister and stayed with her.

The girl's mother claimed that it wasn't just my sister. She said that any child that showed up would have to have a parent present. When I told my mother that she found that very hard to believe. My mother thinks that the lady was just using that as an excuse to not have to be responsible for my sister or have her around.

I told my mother about the situation when she called when she was leaving work to come home when work was over with. My sister was given an invitation to the party. Nowhere on the invitation did it indicate that a parent must be present. Infact, it stated the drop off time. That would lead most people to believe that they could drop their child off.

When my sister got home after I spoke with her friend's mother my sister became really upset. She went over to talk to her friend and her friend's mother. I told her not to, but she didn't listen. So a few minutes after my sister went outside I received a phone call from the mother saying that my sister was over there throwing a fit, screaming, yelling, and crying. She said she was sending my sister home. When my sister got home she was hysterical. She was in tears.

Her friend's mother knew that my mother had to work the next day (the day of the party) and that there was no way she could take off for that. This isn't the first year that my sister hasn't been included in birthday plans and other things for the girl, but it is the first time she was invited and then uninvited.

My mother helped the girl's mother out during spring break back in March. She needed someone to look after her daughter during that week. A couple of days that week my mother had off so she watched her. The lady wasn't grateful. Instead of letting my sister go to the birthday party without a parent she chose to really hurt my sister's feelings. I'm sure the lady will expect different things from us in the future. It just doesn't seem right.

How do you deal with people like this? Alienating them isn't a good idea because my sister doesn't want to lose her friend. At the same time it doesn't seem right that the lady treats my sister differently from the way she treats the girl's other friends.
So this lady doesn't want to be responsible for your sister. Well, #1, she should know about your sister's issues and make appropriate plans if she seems to think your sister needs watched every single minute. And #2, if you can't make those arrangments ahead of time, you don't invite. You certainly don't become an indian giver. As for now though, she made her bed, so she has to lie in it. Your sister should go and this woman should have to deal with it. Your sister obviously wants to go.

But....this isn't overnight. This has been the situation since January 2006...not 2007. Over a year ago. *sigh*

I see about the daily walking. There are times, especially last summer, where I walked daily, but I gotta make it a priority on that, I suppose.

Mona, you are being way too hard on yourself. I've seen pictures of you and you are a beautiful lady.

What sites are best to try and find concert tickets?

I've tried looking on Ticketmaster.com, but the Nickelback concert isn't listed. I'm not sure why. My mother wants to go to it and I thought it would be nice to get her a ticket for her birthday next month. She said the concert will be sometime in August.

If the concert isn't listed on Ticketmaster does that mean it's sold out?
Not necessarily. Check the venue's website. Maybe the tickets are sold there, or it will say where they are sold.

Here: Woodlands or Frisco. Is one of those close? http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/710632

Ok, another site says that The Woodlands Pavilion is in Houston.

Is it right to pick certain family members over others? I don't think it's right.
No Jenny, it's not right, but I see so much favoritism in families, and it's so unfair and hurtful. I can't believe your brother's attitude towards his own mother, and siblings. That's disgraceful. He can't shell out a lousy 50 bucks for his own mother's birthday. Shame on him.

I don't give to receive, but I've personally had it with people who don't reciprocate at all. The last year or so, I've become good at forgetting birthdays myself. I know I'm shocking the hell out of a few people, but I'm not playing the chump anymore.

If I were you, I'd give to his kids and that's it. They don't sound very appreciative anyway. The world is full of users and takers. People just p*ss me off, lol.

A good friend of mine has been cheating on her husband. I am actually friends with both of them, that is why this is such a sticky situation. She has been going hot and heavy with a co worker. At times, I feel obligated to tell the husband, but another side of me doesn't want to get involved. There is a child involved in all of this too, so I don't know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

What would you want to have happen Brian, if it was you who was being cheated on? Ask yourself what you would want and that should help you to decide what to do. I know what you mean abt not wanting to get involved. You may get the wrath. But, we also live in a world where HIV and AIDS is running rampant and he needs to be aware and be careful.

That is very true. If I was being cheated on (Which I have been) I would want to know. It sucks that I know what I know.

I know you would want to know. I think we all would want to know if that were occurring behind our backs. Sure the initial jolt will be shocking, he will be hurt, p*ssed, etc. but in the end, he will thank you for informing him. He may be mad at you if you NEVER said anything and he found out you knew.

That's a tough one Brian, especially where your friends with BOTH of them. There's no happy ending for this one, and if you tell, you're bound to lose the friendship of one, possibly even both of them. Often times, people end up hating the messenger.

I was in a similar situation once. A friend of mine was in a hot and heavy cyber-affair with someone I knew -- in e:mails, AIM, and although she never told me outright, I have good reason to believe that they hooked up. It was very tricky because I was friendly with his girlfriend. I didn't like it, but my friend told me that it wasn't hurting anyone, and that it would end, which I assume it did, but it went on for a couple of years.

She used to forward me the e:mails, etc, and they were steamy, lol. I don't know why, but I saved them and still have them today. The ironic thing about it is that his wife was always going on about how he was so great, and that he would NEVER cheat on her. I'd be thinking to myself, if she only knew what a horndog she had on her hands.

I'm sorry I trailed off there Brian. As for your problem, I agree with Irene, in that the husband has a right to know, but it's so hard to get involved in other people's affairs (pun intended). I need to think more about it.

Pretty much. It's an awful situation to be in. It also happened another time, over 20 years ago, with my best friend. Someone told me her boyfriend was having a fling. I did tell my friend. He hated me for a while, but they worked it out. They've been married for 25 years now, with three kids.

Brian, I wanted to add one more thing. Janice is right that you may have to deal with one or both friends being mad at you, but in the long run, the person who cheats and does so right out in the open and isn't very discreet, deserves to be caught. You owe that girl nothing. She should know better and if she is having an affair, she is adult enough to know the consequences and to hell with her. If she gets mad at you, so be it. She is the one in the wrong. People like that who get caught don't own up to their mistakes.

well there's this girl at school her name is samantha and she's really cute and nice.
Update: Samantha hooked up with one of my friends what should I do now?? I really don't know how to feel about this....

There's really not much you can do. The best thing to do is just accept it. I had crushes on girls who wound up going with friends and it hurt, but there was nothing I could do.
