View Full Version : This is why Alice was a boring lead character

She needs $600 for Tommy's teeth, $40,000 turns up in the diner and she wants to turn it in to the police. At least Mel, Flo, Tommy and even Vera was down for keeping the money. She even tried to call the police to turn it in. Alice is a goody-two shoes, just like she mentioned in this episode.

That's what made her great, she was a polar opposite from everybody else on the show.

She was different. She reminds me of Flo on Good Times. Miss Goody-Two shoes. I would have been down for the money too.

What is wrong with being a goody-two shoes?? I would have done the same thing Alice did and turn in the money.

I'm sorry, but $40,000 would be talking to me. There is nothing wrong with being a goody-two shoes. I wouldn't have told that old lady that I found a paper bag with money in it either.

Yeah, but aren't you the same person who admitted that if a cashier gave you too much change, you would run out of the store?

That's because, there are a lot of dishonest people out there. I do know of plenty who WOULD turn around though.

There's a later episode where Flo says something to the effect of "You and your sickening integrity" to Alice :)

Yup, I said that. Call me a crook, but it's a cut-throat world out there. You didn't steal anything it fell into place. There is a difference.

That is wrong to think like that, if you knowingly take something and not return it, you are a thief.

In my case it was different. The lady that gave me an extra 10 dollar bill was talking to another customer while she was ringing me up. She should have been paying attention. Her mind wasn't focused on me anyway. She annoyed me because she didn't pay me attention. When I looked after she gave me change, that's when I noticed she gave me extra. I looked at it as she should have been paying attention, she wouldn't have short-changed me. That's her bad.

Solomon, you just don't get it. If you take something that isn't rightfully yours, it is stealing.

Back to point. I think Alice Hyatt in the early seasons was boring because they were trying to make her another Mary Richards where she would react to all antics that was going on around her. That did not work. Plus the character was recently widowed, trying to raise a child on her own plus raising herself, moved into a state without knowing anyone, working a lower class job to make ends meet and pursuing a dream of being a singer. The first couple of seasons they were dealing with all that so that's what made Alice Hyatt boring but when the third season rolled around Alice did loosen up quite a bit. At the same time Linda Lavin became difficult to work with because she wanted to be her show and not an ensemble show with her as the star.
