In the episode, One Night to Remember, they cut out the entire scene where Alice and Flo make over a dreary Vera. I have to admit, Vera didn't look half bad.

That was an important scene. Didn't they show it at the end when the credits were being shown?

If they cut out those long ass commercials, it wouldn't be necessary to chop out those scenes. I timed one episode and it was an average 22 mins. or so. Back in the days, it seemed to run that long, so why do they cut out so much?

Yeah, LOL why show the closing credits with scenes that you cut out??? It is almost as if I am watching a half of a show.

As I watch each episode, I don't blame Solomon for NOT WANTING to record it. If I was recording this program, I would be pissed because I wouldn't know when to hit PAUSE. Those commercials come on at the weirdest moments.

Yeah I know, you see something like Mel talking in the kitchen and in mid sentence, it goes to a commercial and when the show comes back, they are usually at Alice's apartment.

Exactly! And the funny thing is, they cut out a big part of the show that leads up to why they are back at the apartment.

If I was a new viewer to Alice, I would be soooooo damn confused. I would be looking at the credits and saying, "What the hell IS THAT SCENE?"

That's exactly what I am doing now. lol I use to watch this show years ago, but I forgot about half of the episodes. Now, I look forward to watching the closing credits to see what scene I missed. LOL

Well, when a show that originally ran 25 minutes now runs 22 minutes, something's gotta give ;) It happens on other shows too. Sometimes a guests only scene will be removed, but they'll still be on the closing credits. (I'm not speaking specifically for Alice...I know of at least two other shows I've seen this happen on). One (Friends) even had replacement credits for the end, rather than the closing scene, and credited an actress that only was on the removed closing scene...you'd think they would have caught that one.

I hear ya Bri - it's getting ridiculous!

TVLand Canada runs Mary Tyler Moore daily, and I can't believe how chopped up it is. They'll be right in the middle of scene - mid-sentence and WHAM - chop to next scene. You can't tell me these are "damaged" tapes where they've had to edit.

Or they'll chop scenes and go to commercials where its the same damned commerical for the fourth time in a half hour period. We GET it already guys - just leave our classic shows intact!!!!

Yea,

Years ago, I read that Canadian TV did not censor their material. It's gotten almost as bad as in the States.

Well I think we are still a little more liberal than in the U.S., (the only time I see something censored is when it comes from a network feed) but moreso in radio than television - hell, you can get away with just about ANYTHING on radio up here.

I don't think it's so much as censorship, but just chopping syndicated shows to work in a few more commercials. We're bombarded enough - especially the internet - leave our t.v.'s alone! ;)

I don't know why everyone is so up in arms over ION trimming these episodes? I don't think any syndicated shows have ever been shown without having material cut from them (unless the show was produced after about 1996).

When Alice originally ran in syndication in the early 80s, the shows were chopped.

It's not the Editing that we have a problem with it's the SLOPPY EDITING that is annoying. Like a few said in this thread, ION cuts to a commercial while someone is talking at Mel's Diner and then when the show comes back on they are not even at Mel's. So that's why I decided not to record the eps anymore because the Editing is too sloppy. N@N edits their eps but not in a SLOPPY way

I understand shows have to be cut in syndication, but it really seems that ION cuts out huge chunks.

Exactly. Solomon and Brian are totally correct. Back in the days when I saw ALICE in syndication, those episodes were great, compared to now on ION. My God, the commercial interruptions came on WHEN THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO, not during a conversation.

My only guess is that this is a new network and they desperately need the ad dollars.

bellbm

Correct, and now most stations program in a "seamless program" way. Back in the day, a typical time clock for a station might look like this

top of the hour- start show
:01-:03 commercial
:03-:13 segment 1
;13-;15 commercial
;15-:26 segment 2
:28-:28:30- closing credits
28:30-30:00 commercials
30:00 start new show

Now, stations want one show to run into another, so they have to add the commercials into the show in areas that they weren't necessarily intended to be.

Which probably explains why they have so many paid programming in their schedule.

Even when Alice was shown in syndication on TNN and other channels, it was NEVER edited this bad. It was like watching the show almost exactly like it was back when it originally aired.

Me too. The episodes I have recorded are from E! and TNN and the commercial breaks make a helluva lot more sense.

I miss TNN also.

The editing of 70's syndicated shows during the 80's and 90's was soooo much better.

I'm glad you enjoy the shows Irene!;) I wish they were editing like they were back in the 80s. I never even noticed that shows were cut back then. They at least had SOME respect for the episodes/story continuity. I guess in the future, re-runs of shows are going to be like 10 minutes long. More like previews of coming attractions at the movies than like an episode-lol.

I will admit the editing is a bit rough on Ion, I watched "The Second Time Around" on Ion, and also streamed the episode on IN2TV. Ion cut out two critical scenes of Flo talking with Alice and Vera in the storeroom about her ex husband. It was about 4 minutes of material (cumulative).

Ion seems to cut entire scenes, whereas syndication cuts in the good old days (the 80s) would edit out lines here and there, but hardly ever an entire critical scene.

I didn't like TNN, they time copressed. That looks worse than anything.

In tonight's episode abt Alice moonlighting, Ion actually cut when they were supposed to. After Alice walked out of the diner, the audience applauded and it went to commercial.

They cut Tommy's scene completely on last nights episode (where he's pretending he's someone at the bar, requesting songs...pretty funny scene). I think they cut a scene early too, after the first commecial break. I don't remember seeing the scene where the girls were all lined up (they showed it on the closing credits).
Also, did anyone notice the guy hitting on Flo and Vera, was the guy who played Flo's first husband Big Daddy Dawson (Norm Alden). Another thing, I think that episode might have been the first time Mel told someone to "Stow it" (don't remember seeing it before last nights episode, unless it was cut out in a previous episode)

In tonight's "Single Belles," ION cut out a whole lot of scenes in the singles bar.

Not sure if it was uncut on E! (the bar scene I mean), but comparing it with ION, the first 2 minutes of the bar scene were cut (on E!, Flo, Alice and Vera enter the bar, and they see Andy with an old lady, Flo talks to a really short guy. The part where Flo bumps into the guy intentionally that started the scene on ION was about 2 minutes in). Also a few seconds at the end of the scene, where Mel is sitting at a table with a blond girl (Victoria Carroll). Alice, Flo and Vera see him, and Vera yoo-hoo's to get Mel's attention, and the woman says something like "Rocky, those women seem to know you", then it cut to a break on E!

Apparently he did :) A few more lines were cut at the beginning of the next scene too...started out with Mel, Flo and Alice in the kitchen, Flo jokingly calls him Rocky, asks how he made out with that twinkie last night. Mel says none of your business, Flo says "translation, Mel struck out". Then Flo and Alice walk out in the diner (which is where ION started the scene)
