View Full Version : Reuben didn't seem like he really loved Thelma

She was the agressor, having crushes on him early in the series, he really didn't seem interested. But as time went on, he started dropping hints on how he was going to marry her, even though they did tie the knot. But, it looked like he married her to make her happy, because if you ask me, they didn't seem like a fit couple.

He wasn't attracted to her but she just grew on him over time

I don't think anyone could grow on me if they repeatedly threw themselves on me like that.

I think Reuben always loved Thelma, just that he was too shy & bashful to admit it until later.

Thelma was not the most attractive thing either, lol. I always thought she was way too old to carry on the way she did. I could see a young, fat girl chasing after some cute guy.

You can say that again. What got on my nerves is how she whined all the time instead of talking.

At least the guy in the Army tried to break her out of doing that. Other than that, it was whine, whine, whine.

I wasn't wild about them as a couple either. I agree that Thelma was a champion whiner who complained about everything at the top of her lungs.

One thing was hysterical about her wedding day. Thelma is in her robe, hair still up in curlers waiting for her dress to arrive from the bridal shop. Every time the doorbell rings, it is the photographer, the caterer, and the florist but not the delivery man from the bridal shop. She gets more and more agitated by the minute. Finally the delivery man shows up with the dress. Casietta and Amelia tell Deacon a few minutes later from the stairwell about a catastrophe.

Thelma stalks down the stairs in a too-small tutu like wedding dress. The steamed look on her face as she marched over to the phone was priceless!

I always that said that her "daddy" paid the Rev to marry his hosebeast of a daughter. He was waaaaaay to good-looking to even give her the time of day.

Yup, and he was played by Shaft himself, Richard Roundtree!!

I will say this in defense of the Thelma Frye character - she was well into her 30s, was stuck living at home with her father, had trouble finding a job, and despaired of ever finding true love. Trust me, I can relate, as I'm going through the same thing right now!!!

My issue is that she had more than one opportunity to succeed at her jobs and she just quit. One was real estate the other was the high paying position where she was matching swimsuit models for some magazine for her company. I realize her integrity came into play but at least go look for something else. She was a good cook for a while when she was in the army but then was back to being a bad cook. I thought Thelma was okay looking especially in season four when she wore the crimp style in the front of her hair.

I have to disagree! Maybe in the beginning that might of been the case but if you go back to the episode "Thelma's reunion" and to the scene where Thelma comes down the stairway in a sparkly royal blue dress all dolled up,look at the reverend's look on his face. From that point on his feelings changed for her and over the season those feelings grew. Also if he wasn't attracted to her then why was he always the one initiating all those kissing scenes? What about when another guy would come into play, like in those episodes "Thelma's Handyman", "MatchMaker MatchMaker" and "Sergeant in Arms" ? Reuben was always getting jealous when another man was interested in Thelma. When the day finally came and he married her.....He looked like a groom very much in love and eager to be with his new bride!

Maybe he settled because he wasn't getting any younger?

No, I don't think so. I think it's just hard for some fans to get past what a person looks like on the outside rather than what is going on inside. If you REALLY watch the show, you can clearly see the passion between both characters, especially season 4.

She was a good person, that's why he married her. He probably had no luck finding someone nice and wanted to marry someone nice but wasn't ready to settle down or date anyone during the time he met Thelma.

If you guys didn't like Reuben and Thelma together, then why are you in this thread? Amen was mostly about their relationship, much like Diane/Sam on Cheers. That was really the draw of the show. Maybe you watched it for Hemsley, but he really wasn't the driving force of the show. Anyway, I think it's rude to put Anna Maria Horsford's looks down. Why not just skip the thread?

Exactly! "Thelma's Reunion" started the mutual attraction between those two. I thought they were AMAZING and had amazing chemistry. Some people just didn't have an understanding of how these two connected. A shame. Because I believe their relationship was what made this show so popular. I personally watched it for them...I couldn't wait each week to watch their relationship grow.

Please! Reuben could have gotten anybody he wanted. Remember when his ex fiancé came back, BEGGING for sex (all the women threw themselves at him...not just Thelma)? He absolutely wouldn't have sex with her, or give her any chance. He said he loved his new fiancé Thelma. He loved her!!!!

I don't think that's the case. The Reverend was a pretty good looking guy. He could have had his pick of a lot of ladies, but he chose Thelma because he did love her.
