Carol was kinda messed up, in general, despite her progressiveness.

She was around my age when she was dating guys old enough to be her father or even grandfather. When women her age start going out with men old enough to be father they has some serious daddy issues. I think Carol might of been a gold digger because guys around her age back then and now don't have a lot of money to spend. They're paying off their college loans and ton of bills.

I keep reading about how "nasty" it was for Carol to date her mom's ex. But actually, it's no bigger a deal than having sex with any other consenting adult. By it's very nature, sex is indeed NASTY. So it's not any less nasty if he had never been Maude's boyfriend before he became Carol's. Sex is gonna be physically NASTY no matter who it's between. Period.

Carol was engaged on AITF, had a fairly grown son by the time she was on Maude and separated from her husband, so she wasn't that young and naive.

Carol was a pretty girl. And she was built nice too! ;) I always noticed though, all her boyfriends in the show never were really good looking. I always thought she could get a better looking guy! :confused:

Well, technically Carol was the two best things.

I know I'm late to the party, but I just recently saw this one.

I agree that Carol had daddy issues. I think she was also looking for stability for her and Philip, and to get out of Maude's house. She's like her mother in that she's opinionated and very vocal, and it did cost her at least one job. And in those days, single moms were really looked down upon (unless they were widows). So while she was a feminist, she also knew her prospects were limited.

She was also pig-headed enough to dig her heels in hard when Maude started in on her about it. I don't know that she was gold-digging per se, but I think it was more of a situation in that she felt she would eventually grow fond of him and it would work out in the end. In reality, I know a few people who married someone who was old enough to be a parent (or close to it). I only know one couple that worked out long-term, and she passed away before they could get to the next phase in life (he is younger than she was). My brother in law is dating a woman who could be his mother, age wise, but they'll never marry, and I believe the relationship is largely "platonic" if you know what I mean (I think she has medical issues).
