View Full Version : New Spinoff Debate, Is Archie Bunker's Place a Spinoff or a continuation?

TVFactFan

I say that it's a continuation since the Main Character, is still on the show in the same house. It's just that the title of the show was changed and the situation was a little diferent. I still say Continuation kind of like Three's a Crowd

What do you think?

Brieannas21
04-10-2007, 07:56 PM
Yes it's a Spinoff of All in the Family, the show had a different cast, theme song, it didn't seem like a family style show. If it's wasn't a spinoff then they would have left the show as "All in the Family," and they wouldn't have changed it.

I think Archie Bunkers Place is a continuation. I've never seen the show before, but I know all the main characters from the last season of AITF stayed on the show when it became ABP, so IMO it's a continuation.

And I have the Complete Directory to Prime Time Network TV Shows book and theres a section that lists all the spinoffs and Archie Bunker's Place isn't listed. In fact, they even mention All in the Family in the spinoff section "The all-time spinoff champion is All in the Family, which has spawned no fewer than 5 other series, three of them highly successful and two of them spin-offs from spin-offs (Gloria, Maude, The Jeffersons, Good Times, and Checking In)" They don't say anything about ABP.

Here's an excerpt from a 1981 Norman Lear interview conducted by Bill Moyers in which Mr. Lear refers to Archie Bunker's Place as an extension.

NL: I was pleased to see it conclude, because we had all exercised our abilities those nine or ten years - and Carroll wanted to do something different with the extension, called "Archie Bunker's Place." But had we all wished to continue, we could have gone another ten years...

The entire interview can be found here:

It may be considered a Spin-Off, that's why it's not syndicated with All in the Family, but in my mind it's definately a Continuation.

Here's how I see it. After eight seasons, Mike and Gloria left "All in the Family." The following season, they brought in Stephanie. The next season, the title was changed to "Archie Bunker's Place" but it still had Edith and Stephanie and the house setting and the bar setting, which was called Archie Bunker's Place in the previous season, I believe. So it was just a title change. They paid more attention to the bar, obviously, but it was still the same show. I mean it definately changed from the original format, so they changed the title, but I don't see it as a whole seperate series. It's just "The Later Years" to All in the Family.

And I also consider Mayberry R.F.D. to be a Continuation of Andy Griffith. Because I believe that if the show was originally titled "The Mayberry Show" back in 1960, when Griffith left in 1968, it would have continued as "The Mayberry Show" and been syndicated with the other eight seasons. It's just because the title had Griffith's name in it that they had to change the name of the show and get a new leading actor.

Three's a Crowd could go either way. It was a continuation because it followed the star of Three's Company, Jack Tripper after the girls moved on and he moved in with his girlfriend.

Oh and that Complete Directory book doesn't list it as a spin-off because in the section about "All in the Family" it combines both shows as one. It says the show started in 1971 and ended in 1983, listing all the cast changes and mentioning the name change, but considering it to be the same show. And I agree with it.

A TV Guide book I have lists it as two different shows, but describes it this way:

Under "All in the Family" it says, "The series premiered on CBS on Jan. 12, 1971, changed it's title to 'Archie Bunker's Place' in 1979 and ran on the network until 1983.

Under "Archie Bunker's Place" it says, "'All in the Family' evolved into this series in 1979, with Archie now a widower and the proprietor of his own neighborhood bar."

It is a great book but their are some mistakes in it. For example it does state that The Lucy Show ran 12 years. It counts The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy as one series which it clearly is not.

As for ABP I consider it a spin-off mainly because it's syndicated as a different package. Back when the show originally aired though I thought of it as a continuation. I don't remember a lot of hype saying it was a brand new show.

See that's what I never understood, why is it not connected in syndication if it's the same show that carried on after the 1978-79 season. You would think that ABP would start right up in syndication and show Archie being in a different situation

Before I had ever seen the show (All in the Family) and I heard it was coming to TV Land, I was excited to see the episode where Edith died. I was so ticked off when after the ninth season, they went back to the beginning. That's when I learned it was syndicated as two different shows (released on DVD as two different shows, also). But in my mind, it's all the same series, just a change in format. And once I get all of the series on DVD, I'll watch it from the beginning, in order for all thirteen seasons, treating it as one show.

I've never heard anyone say that Archie Bunkers Place WAS a spin-off. No web pages, no sources, nothing. Solomon might not go by books and websites when people say that Good Times is a spin-off of Maude, but he actually had a reliable source about Good Times not being a spinoff of Maude, so it's understandable. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with him, that's a different topic for a different time and from what I understand, a worn out topic too.

Continuation, the last season of All in the Family is about Archie and his bar, what is the difference? Plus Stephanie was on both shows. She is a completly different character than Meathead and Gloria, but she was already a regular when Bunkers place began. The series was also in the same time slot as All in the Family's last season. Same network, same time, same everything.

Adamantium

I guess AfterMash too

I don't know about that one. To me, a Continuation can have both shows in syndication, airing together as one show. AfterMash, to me, doesn't go that easily together with M*A*S*H as one show.

I believe the main reason they split All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place in syndication is because there's thirteen seasons. And they figure most people just want to watch the classic Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers seasons, so they figured the tenth season would be the place to cut it off since it had a new title and theme.

And while I'm trying to stay on topic, I'm surprised that What's Happening!! and What's Happening Now!! are considered two different shows in syndication. I've always thought of "Now" as just seasons 4, 5 and 6 but they happened to be made seven years later. If a cartoon does that, it goes with the first run in reruns (The Jetsons, Family Guy, soon Futurama).

Yes, it's a Spinoff of All in the Family, the show had a different cast, theme song, it didn't seem like a family style show. If it's wasn't a spinoff then they would have left the show as "All in the Family," and they wouldn't have changed it.

The theme song was the same as All In The Family, with the difference being that it was done as an instrumental instead of having lyrics sung by Archie and Edith.

The only change to the cast was the addition of Martin Balsam as Murray Klein. The core cast remained the same from the previous season, including recurring and supporting characters.

This show was a continuation, not a spinoff

If the character of Archie had been put into a new setting or locale, with new supporting characters, then I would say it's a spinoff.

It's a 100% continuation. The only differences were that Edith eventually was written off and there were more scenes at the bar. But he lived at the same house with Stephanie and had the same friends and barflies surrounding him.

It's a continuation - DEAL WITH IT!!:happyface

I don't remember the name of the website, if someone here does, maybe they could post a link. But it lists shows that are spin-offs and shows that are continuations. They list Archie Bunker's Place as a continuation. Not that that makes it official, I just thought it was worth mentioning in this thread.

"Joey" is a spin-off. It took Joey Tribbianni from "Friends" and set him in a new locale, a new cast and made him the star.

"Rhoda" is a spin-off. It took Rhoda Morgenstern from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", gave her a new setting, a new cast and made her the star.

"Frasier" is a spin-off. It took Frasier Crane from "Cheers" gave him a new locale, a new cast and made him the star.

"Archie Bunker's Place" is a continuation. It continued over from "All in the Family" with the same cast, just paid more attention to the bar.

"Mayberry, R.F.D." is a continuation. It continued with the town of Mayberry, just losing Andy, Opie and Helen and adding Sam Jones.

"Three's a Crowd" is confusing to me. The producers making it, considered a spin-off, I believe. They ended "Three's Company" when they did, just so they could make the new show. They were copying off of the British version of "Robin's Nest." It's a continuation of Jack's life, but since he's the ONLY character from "Three's Company" to do "Three's a Crowd" it makes me kind of consider it a spin-off. It's just funny the idea of giving the STAR of a show, their own show. They already had their own show, lol.

Consider this: a continuation is simply one type of spin-off and thus Archie Bunker's Place can be considered both a spin-off and a continuation. However, not every spin-off would be a continuation, but every continuation would be a spin-off.

I think I posted this in another thread but in 1986 Too Close For Comfort was transformed into The Ted Knight Show. It was considered a spin-off even though Ted Knight was the star. The daughters were the only ones that left the show. Then Ted Knight died and the show ended. When TCFC went into syndication the TKS episodes were syndicated with it under the TCFC Banner. Now I can see that if ABP had been canceled after one season it could have been syndicated with AITF . It could have even had Archie and Edith still singing the song because nothing had changed in that season except they were at the bar most of the time.

It is my understanding that the characters Ozzie and Harriet Nelson played in Ozzie's Girls were supposed to be the same characters they had played in The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet. Now that I think about it, though, if they were playing the same characters that would make Ozzie's Girls a continuation of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, with Ozzie and Harriet taking in two coeds after their sons leave home. Also, if a main character from Series A is transplanted to Series B and according to Solomon, Series B cannot properly be called a spin-off because it focuses on a main character from Series A, how do we explain Friends and Joey? I am sure we can all agree that there was no main character in Friends, meaning all six characters were main characters, and Joey focused on the character of Joey from Friends. So would Joey be a spin-off of Friends or a continuation?

To me, a continuation is if it continues from the season before it. "All in the Family" evolved into "Archie Bunker's Place." They are the same show, but the focus changed. "The Andy Griffith Show" evolved into "Mayberry R.F.D." They are the same show, but without Andy Griffith. It continued the lives of the citizens of Mayberry, even having Andy Taylor show up for a few early episodes.

There's obviously a very fine line between calling it a Continuation or a Spin-Off. In the case of All in the Family, I wouldn't feel like having the complete series on DVD unless I had all 13 seasons (AITF/ABP). The same goes for The Andy Griffith Show. I don't feel like it's complete without "Mayberry R.F.D." And to an extent, mostly because the finale of "Three's Company" made a big deal about the new season, I don't feel my TC collection is complete without "Three's a Crowd." Yet, I feel like I have the complete "Friends" collection without having "Joey" on DVD. To me, it's that. Whether I feel a show is complete without it's "Spin-Off" or "Continuation" series. And in the end, it doesn't matter what we call it. But I admit, this debate is fun.

Also, what about "Saved by the Bell" and "Saved by the Bell: The College Years". Spin-Off or Continuation? And what about "The New Class"? It's the very next season after Zack and the gang graduate. It follows Bayside high and Mr. Belding, so is it a spin-off or continuation?

Nice Post!

One series I count as a spinoff and not a continuation is the New Leave it to Beaver. It has the same characters, but follows a movie and was made 20 years after the series ended. Archies Bunkers Place was made after a summer hiatus. Just a new season of the show.

Another one because of time is Get Smart 95. It was made 25 years after the series ended. Again same charcters (Max and 99) but there was a huge break between the series.
