View Full Version : Best actors/actresses at playing drunk??
catlover79 03-26-2007, 10:02 PM As far as actresses, I think Lucy tops this category: from the infamous Vitameatavegamin (or however you spell it) commercial to her drunk scene in Yours, Mine, and Ours, she actually looked tanked!!
For actors, I have to pick Dick Wilson. While he is best known as "Mr. Whipple" in the Charmin ads, he was always playing a drunk in Bewitched episodes. He had the drunk walk and speech down to a science!! Years later, he appeared in an episode of Tabitha as - what else - a drunk.
I think that is one sign you can do comedy - if you can play a good drunk scene. Yes, I know I'm weird.
Foster Brooks made a career out of playing a drunk on tons of TV shows in his career. He was hysterical.
The cast of "M*A*S*H" had some actors who played great drunks. Maclean Stevenson, Loretta Switt, Gary Berghoff, Harry Morgan, David Ogden Stires...
On a early episode of Happy Days, Ritchie & Potsie go to a bachelor party &
get drunk, they played the part very well and it was pretty funny.

kambreesuncle 03-26-2007, 10:38 PM LUCY IS THE WINNER. Whenever I hear abt drunk actresses/actors, Lucy always comes to mind. :D
Lucy's hilarious role stands out as the best. My 2nd choice goes to Marla Gibbs in the ep. of "The Jeffersons" when Florence thinks everyone forgot her birthday. She and Mr. Bentley were just funny drunk.
Zoneboy 03-26-2007, 10:40 PM Hal Smith - Otis Campbell from The Andy Griffith Show
catlover79 03-26-2007, 10:47 PM Hal Smith - Otis Campbell from The Andy Griffith Show
Ah, good old Otis...how could I forget him??
Dr. Jazz 03-26-2007, 11:17 PM That guy that played Ned the wino on Good Times and Uncle Woody on Sanford & Son. He portrayed a wino very accurately lol
Zoneboy 03-26-2007, 11:38 PM That guy that played Ned the wino on Good Times and Uncle Woody on Sanford & Son. He portrayed a wino very accurately lol
Raymond Allen
treky 03-27-2007, 12:07 AM My picks would be the cast of MASH-mostly Lorreta Swit and Gary Burghoff; but the others were good too. Like Harry Morgan and Gary Burghoff in the scene from the episode with Donalds bachelor party.
Radar: "CO. POTTER! PERMISSION TO GO OUTSIDE AND GET SICK"?
And later, when Potter's leaving, he sees Radar on the ground passed out-
Potter" Come on Radar, get up. You-you'll get dirt in your nose".
Radar: "OK Uncle Ed, but what are all these tents doing in our yard"?
comedyfreak 03-27-2007, 05:34 AM Lucy
Dick Wilson (Mr. Whipple)
Raymond Allen (Ned The wino and Woodrow Anderson)
Hal Smith (Otis Campbell)
sunshinefizzy 03-27-2007, 07:29 AM Richard Kline (Larry Dallas) from 3's company gets my vote. Don Knotts was pretty good as well.
Ralph while drunk: Jack has such a great sense of humor! Everytime he sees me he laughs!!!
On Bewitched, I think there were a couple of times when Darrin played the drunk too.
catlover79 03-27-2007, 08:49 PM On Bewitched, I think there were a couple of times when Darrin played the drunk too.
You're right, Darrin was drunk a few times. It was hysterical when Sam yelled at him, "Go back to your friendly bartender with your mouth full of olives!" and he was zapped right back to the bar, with his mouth stuffed with olives. It was a  moment.
comedyfreak 03-27-2007, 10:09 PM I remember that one!! :)
mrs.gingerhinkley 03-28-2007, 05:41 PM Do we even need to discuss this?! LUCILLE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!! that woman was HYSTERICAl at playing drunk!
I live for scenes were she does that!!!!
Vitameatavegimin- can i say good times?!
Buffyboy323 03-29-2007, 12:38 AM I LOVED when Archie got drunk, on All In The Family. Everyone went away, and he got locked in the basement, and found that bottle of (I think it was) Vodka! It`s one of my favorite episodes. Carol O`Connor was funny as H*** as a drunk.

That was funny. He thought he was talking to god and it was a black fellow
delivering their heating fuel.
Rosslover 03-31-2007, 06:11 PM How could you forget one of the best modern ones. Watching David Schwimmer drunk on FRIENDS is hysterical.. I dare anyone to not laugh at the Vegas episode..and also Jen, Courtney, as well.
catlover79 04-10-2007, 10:38 PM Bob Newhart is hysterical while playing drunk. Check out the famous Thanksgiving ep from the Bob Newhart Show that aired in Season 4 (available on DVD with commentary from Newhart and Jack Riley!) called "Over the River and Through the Woods". It made the Top 10 of TV Guide's greatest episodes of all time, and rightly so.
Scoobiedoo30 04-12-2007, 01:40 AM Hal Smith Otis Campbell The Andy Griffith Show
andress_jade 04-12-2007, 07:19 PM How about the actor that played Otis on The Andy Griffith Show? He did a great job as a drunk. It was so believeable.:)
I have to agree about Lucy! She was a riot!
There also was an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show when Rob was hypnotized and he thought he was drunk. Dick Van Dyke did a great job!:D
On an episode of I Dream of Jeannie, Jeannie was looking for Tony and Roger after their ship crashed. It crashed and a bunch of hillbillys found and thought Tony and Roger were aliens and held them captive in the barn. Jeannie found them and eventually rescued them but she was hit on the head and Tony and Roger found what they thought was water and gave it to Jeannie and it turns out it was moonshine. The things Jeannie did when she was drunk was funny!
Jerlene 04-12-2007, 10:00 PM The mom on The O.C. It's the most realistic.

And, that episode of TDVDS was called "My husband is not a drunk". And; I agree. Dick WAS funny at playing drunk!!!
Did anyone ever see a movie he did in 1969 called "The Comic"? He's drunk in a couple scenes in there, too.
Madame X 04-13-2007, 09:57 AM Me too!! How much alcohol was in that bottle, anyway??
Vitameatavegimin was 23% alcohol! Compare that to straight wine, which is about 12-15%!
Lucy was also drunk in the Cuban jail with Susie MacNamara in the first Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour episode, "Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana." Ann Sothern plays a great drunk as Susie.
Madame X 04-25-2007, 05:20 PM Jackie Harris on Roseanne had a great drunk scene on Roseanne in "Little Sister." Roseanne criticizes Jackie for wanting to become a cop and Darlene spends the night with her.
benjamoon 04-26-2007, 06:37 PM Lucille Ball of course
Dick Van Dyke and Bob Newhart didn't do it very often but were masters at it
Kristen 04-27-2007, 02:49 PM I can't believe no one's mentioned Ed Asner in the first ep. of Mary Tyler Moore. I love that scene where he's writing a letter to his wife. LOL I also have to agree about Dick Van Dyke, that was incredible. But then Dick always had a gift for physical comedy.
Zebra 3 04-27-2007, 05:42 PM My favourites are Foster Brooks and Dean Martin.
Marvo301 04-28-2007, 03:30 AM My favorite is a scene from the Dick Van Dyke Show. Rob was performing a skit at one of Alan Brady's parties. He played a man who came home falling down drunk and as soon as his wife comes in the room he becomes completely sober. Then she steps out of the room and he is falling down drunk again. Then she returns and he is instantly sober again. A brilliant performance by Dick Van Dyke!!!!
treky 04-28-2007, 11:55 PM yea; that's the pilot, "SICK BOY & THE SITTER". I also liked his drunk performance in the episode MY HUSBAND IS NOT A DRUNK (that's the one where Rob gets hypnotized into acting drunk whenever a bell rings)
Carol Kester on The Bob Newhart got smashed drinking egg-nog on a christmas episode.
James 05-09-2007, 02:13 AM My choice is Staci Keanan on Step By Step.
On one episode of Step By Step Cody gave Dana some medication, and she was doing two things (not at once, mind you!): (1) playing "I've got the blues" on an electric guitar, and (2) saying "It's time to limbo!" in sunglasses and a tie-dye shirt. It was one of the episodes in which JT got in some sort of trouble. She was so funny!!!
 :rotflmao:

In that episode, Dana was whacked out on medication because she'd just had her wisdom teeth taken out. I still have that ep on tape somewhere.
Chain Gang Member 05-09-2007, 11:32 AM My vote goes to John Ritter and Carol O'Conner
andress_jade 05-09-2007, 06:46 PM I thought of a few more.
On an episode of The Cosby Show Vanessa was at her friends house and they played the alphabet game. The person or people who got the wrong answer had to take a shot, and Vanessa got plastered and had Denise come pick her up. Denise tried to hide it from Cliff and Clair but they eventually found out.
On an episode of Full House DJ and Kimmy went to a party and Kimmy got drunk. DJ brought her home and Kimmy was mean to her until DJ explained that her mom died because of a drunk driver. It was sad and insightful.
On an episode of Roseanne, Becky and her friend make tornadoes and get plastered. Becky gets busted big time.
On an episode of Fresh Prince Will gives Hilary the wrong kind of cold medicine and she acts strangely and then passes out.
On an episode of Home Improvement, Jill is sick and Wilson gives Jill a hot toddy and she gets drunk from it.
tanquant 05-10-2007, 04:36 PM The first person that came to my mind was Otis Campbell. The funny thing about that is that on E! True Hollywood Story Andy Griffith said that Hal Smith never had a drink in his life! What a great actor:)
dakert 05-14-2007, 12:01 PM Larry Storch from Car 54, Where Are You?
catlover79 12-12-2008, 01:53 PM Carol Kester on The Bob Newhart got smashed drinking egg-nog on a christmas episode.
Plus she came back from her lunch break "swacked" a few times.
catlover79 12-12-2008, 01:54 PM I can't believe no one's mentioned Ed Asner in the first ep. of Mary Tyler Moore. I love that scene where he's writing a letter to his wife. LOL I also have to agree about Dick Van Dyke, that was incredible. But then Dick always had a gift for physical comedy.
"All...my...love...LOU!" Yes, very funny.
littlebelle 12-12-2008, 04:36 PM Valerie Bertinelli was actually really good at playing drunk on an episode of ODAAT. Don't know if anyone knows which one I'm talking about...

I think that was in the first season when Ann was away and had David Kane chaperone a party the girls were having. I forget the episode title.

No problemo, Monika. I think the part of my brain where geometry was suppose to go, episode titles went instead!
catlover79 12-12-2008, 11:21 PM No problemo, Monika. I think the part of my brain where geometry was suppose to go, episode titles went instead!
That's the story of my life.
70s show watcher 12-13-2008, 12:17 AM heres an obscure one will hunt who appered as winos on sitcoms like hello larry and gimmie a break if a tv producer in the late 70s and early 80s was looking for someone to play drunk and they couldnt get foster brooks than will hunt was next on the list
mstewart 12-13-2008, 04:12 AM Steve Howey of Reba. The episode when Van got drunk during one of Reba's parties was a scream. Van's dimwittedness came out more in that episode.

Gosh, I don't remember him - probably because I've never seen Hello, Larry and haven't seen Gimme a Break since I was very little.
janet42 12-14-2008, 09:46 AM Otis Campbell. :)
Chocoholic 12-14-2008, 01:23 PM The cast of MASH was great at playing drunk. I also love the two times on Wings when Lowell got high on toadstools and NyQuil.
wkomorow 12-14-2008, 03:36 PM carol o'conner - shuebootie
My favorite drunk is:
Father Jack Hackett from Father Ted -drink, drink, drink
catlover79 12-14-2008, 03:41 PM Steve Buscemi's drunken best man in The Wedding Singer never fails to crack me up - "Why can't you be more like your brother? Harold would never beat up his landlord!!"
