Sleep drug killed Anna, 2 mags say

Anna Nicole Smith died of a lethal level of a potent sleep medication, but she had a raging blood infection that could have killed her had she not overdosed, an exclusive report revealed yesterday.

Smith took the speedy sleep-inducer chloral hydrate, which is sometimes used in "date rape" drugs, the night of Feb. 7 and never woke up, according to a joint investigation by sister publications the National Enquirer and the Star.

In its most stunning disclosure, the report says Smith's life might have been saved had she simply gone to a hospital rather than treating her severe fever, nausea and other infection symptoms on her own.

Smith's lawyer pal Howard K. Stern, a bodyguard and a nurse were with her in the days and hours leading up to her death.

The magazines' report comes days before Broward County Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper is set to reveal his official findings about what killed the 39-year-old ex-model, who died Feb. 8 at a Florida hotel.

Smith's infection, which drove her temperature to a staggering 105 degrees, was caused by an injection in her left buttock with a needle that apparently was not properly sterilized, according to the report, posted on the Enquirer and Star Web sites.

Tests did not reveal what substance had been injected into Smith three days before she died, but a painful abscess developed, the report said.

I just heard this on Inside Edition.

They're going to announce Monday at 10:30 how she died..If that is true its a shame her nurse wouldn't do more to make her go to the hospital. and i'm pretty surpised there were no other drugs in her system. I never thought it'd be sleeping pills

Catherine Crier did an entire show on this on Court TV earlier. If this is all true, and I believe it is, I think those who were with Anna are to blame. Anna was deathly sick, vomiting, diarrhea with a 105 temperature. She was in no condition to make decisions. The abscess on her rear was terrible. They had no business treating her with over-the-counter meds and an ice bath. She had a raging infection in her body. She needed to be in a hospital. They didn't want the bad publicity.

Just like the R&B Singer Gerald Levert. They initially said a heart attack killed him. Later, it was learned he had pneumonia and was treating it with over the counter meds along with the other prescriptions he was taking, it was a deadly combination. Official cause of death: drug overdose.

Since those two deaths, I have been deathly afraid of mixing any medications. My boyfriend has been prescribed some new meds to treat high blood pressure and cholesterol. He needed some over the counter pain killler to help with some pain the other night, but was so afraid, so he didn't.

I'm afraid to mix meds too. I too am wondering about the people with Anna. If she was that ill, they should've gotten her to a hospital, pronto. That's why this whole situation is very fishy to me.

Mr. Stefani

I just dont understand what kind of nurse wouldn't take someone to the hospital in those conditions.

You're absolutely right. My mother is a retired nurse, and she has been following this story closely. She says she would've driven Anna to the hospital herself in that situation, immediately. I think they are trying to cover up something, for sure.

Janice

If this report is true, Anna didn't die from mixing medications. She died from a lethal overdose of the sleep medication, chloral hydrate.

The woman was deathly sick for three days. It's getting harder and harder for the Stern defenders. There's no excuse for this. My husband would have called 911 the first day if I was that ill, and I'd do the same for him. What happened to Anna is disgraceful. I'd like to know where she got the chloral hydrate. I'd also like to know where Danielle got the methadone.

Stern is in a house that's not his, with a child that's most likely not his. I'm hating this creep more and more as the facts emerge. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but no more.

I can't help but think of Elvis Presley when I read abt Anna's life. Elvis didn't go to doctors or hospitals, THEY WENT TO HIM. Some celebs tend to live in this "bubble" existence.

Very true. But in Anna's case, as Janice said, she was dangerously ill for several days and no one took her to a doctor or a hospital. Her life could have been spared. Very scary situation. If my suspicions about Stern are true, losing custody of the baby is the LEAST of his problems.

What I can't fathom, is if she was so damn sick, why was she out and abt buying a boat in Florida? What the hell was going on there?

Mr. Stefani
03-23-2007, 11:26 PM
She was always in and out of hospitals. I guess the people around her figured it was another one of her episodes but the nurse of all people shouldve known better. I really thought her death was going to be methadone related.

She probably didnt get ill until they were in Florida. Her bodyguard said that since she was sick she sent Howard and him out to do the paperwork for the boat.

I heard on a news show that Gerald took like 3 kinds of pain killers and that's what killed him.

I seen the nurse on one of those shows and frankly, she kinda scared me. She didn't seem to know what she SHOULD HAVE DONE. No CPR, not calling 911, she called STERN INSTEAD????

What I mean about feeling fishy is that she died of drug-related causes like Daniel did. Stern was with both of them at the times they died. Just seems suspicious to me.

Anna was sick when they arrived in Florida that Monday. Deathly sick. For three days, she had a terrible infection/abscess on her rear, 105 temp. She died three days later. She suffered for three days. It wasn't the nurse's responsibility to get her to a hospital. It was HER SO-CALLED HUSBAND'S RESPONSIBILITY, but that creep was out looking at boats. Good Lord, that man is going straight to hell.

Personally, I don't suspect foul play in the sense of murder or anything like that. Stern had nothing to gain by their deaths, and everything to lose by Anna's death. I do suspect Stern had something to do with obtaining the drugs for both Danielle and Anna.

I take comfort in the fact that Stern will be handing that baby over to her real father, and he'll be booted out of the house where he's living and refuses to leave, the loser that he is. Then, he'll have nobody and will have to actually work for a living. His meal ticket died. He failed Anna miserably.

I don't believe those stories either abt Stern "causing" their deaths or the suspicions surrounding the fact that he was with both of them. Of course he was, HE WAS ALWAYS WITH THEM, HE WAS ALWAYS AROUND THEM. When wasn't he with them????

On the Court TV show, I watched earlier, one of the guests said that everyone had strict orders from Stern, that if anything happened with Anna, they were to call him, and nobody else. When she died, they called Stern first. The nurse's hands were tied the entire time. Ultimately, Anna was Stern's responsibilty. She was so deathly sick. Just that 105 temp alone....

m not really pro-howard or anything, but I think he was an enabler..Anna's former assistant said that she did the drugs that she wanted regardless of what they said and that her and Howard were always trying to get her off of them but she wouldn't have it. She even said that she and Howard were always sent to pick up her "prescriptions". I think it's a weird situation but Howard and Anna did love each other, and the reason I don't like Larry is because he used Anna. He was a former papz who was infatuated with the life she lived and did anything to stay in it(this according to her friends). Howard on the other hand had been with her for years and gave up his practice for her. He had one of the most successful practices in LA, he clearly couldve survived on his own. Obviously theres a lot more than we know, so...

It's more like 3 painkillers, one anti-anxiety drug and 2 over the counter medications he was using to treat his pneumonia. SIX DIFFERENT MEDS IN HIS BLOODSTREAM!!!!  He may not have thought he had pneumonia, but he had the $$$, he could have gone to a doctor and been treated correctly.

See I really don't believe any of that. I watched the Anna Nicole show season 1 recently(weird to watch now) and Anna walked all over Stern, it was her way or the highway for him. Everyone in her life was like that, she controlled everything.

When the nurse found her unconcious, she called her husband(the bodyguard) first. She said she did it because he was the last person called on her cell phone so she thought it'd be the best thing to do. I think the nurse is more suspicious than Howard.

I didn't mean that he directly caused their deaths...I wasn't accusing him or anything. But he seemed like such a parasite...and a leech. He seems to love the limelight, or did. I still think he's creepy, but he's also a lawyer. *ducks from Irene* Sorry, Irene, I couldn't resist getting in a swipe at a lawyer!

You are right. She did say she called her husband first. I forgot abt that.

Howard was an enabler. Anna was addicted. But she decided what she wanted and unfortunately, whatever Anna wanted, is what Anna got.

I think it's off the wall that you're blaming the nurse and not Stern. I saw the bodyguard himself on tv say that they were instructed to call Stern first. The bodyguard wasn't even working for Anna in Florida, as he had in the past. He and his wife were friendly with Anna, and were with her just for the vacation, and they weren't getting paid. His wife wasn't Anna's hired nurse. She just happened to be a nurse.

If your wife, mother, sister, any loved one....was deathly ill, with a 105 temp, an oozing abscess, diareah, vomiting, in and out of consciousness....do you think you'd call 911? Everyone who was with her and trying home remedies is to blame, but Stern....it was his call to make.

 I take swipes at lawyers every chance I get! LOL

I can't imagine why he would live off of Anna instead of being a man and continue to make a living as a lawyer, even if he sold his practice, he could still do work, outside of helping Anna (or enabling Anna).

I do think he was just as at fault, but I think it's fishy that a trained professional and supposed friend would allow this to go on. In the end it was Anna's call, as sick as she was. I think it was shady that Howard listened to her when she said she didn't want to go to the hospital. It's a shame. I guess we have to wait til Monday to find out if any of this is true(its a tabloid after all). But one thing is for sure, that baby should go to Brad and Angelina, no one in her life should be near that child.

...I would have physically taken someone in that condition to the hopsital. I would also never allow any of my loved ones to get to the point that she was at. Thats what I dont get about all the people in her life. I dont understand how you can sit around and watch someone you supposedly love ruin their life over drugs.

I don't think Anna was in any shape to make any decisions. Supposedly, she and Stern considered themselves married, so it was HIS call to make. He should have called 911. Just pick up the phone and call 911. It's really as simple as that.

LOL at the baby going to Brad and Angelina. That baby needs to be with her natural father, whomever that may be.

As for watching those you love ruin their lives over drugs...it's hard, they don't listen. I lost two sisters to drugs and alcohol. My family had interventions, I talked and cried to them until I was blue in the face. I fought with them, begged them....they don't listen.

Too true...My brothers have been addicted to hardcore drugs, and no matter how much they desire to get off of them, they just can't. Pleading with them hardly works...sadly, sometimes it takes a near-death experience to wake them up, and even then it might not work.

I know the feeling all too well of dealing with this :(

So true Janice. We have had a few conversations discussing this very topic.

One thing is for sure, until a person who is addicted WANTS HELP AND ADMITS THEY HAVE A PROBLEM, you really can't do anything. You can scream, yell, beg, plead, bribe, threaten, etc. IT DOESN'T WORK. Drugs/alcohol are the devil's doing and I have nothing but sympathy for those addicted. I am glad to know that I learned something from what I went through for 16 years rather than come away from that situation NOT HAVING LEARNED A DAMN THING. I am currently helping my boyfriend's best friend who is right now in a situation where he needs understanding. But until he admits he has a problem, we can only offer him our help when he is ready to make that decision.

So true. It makes me think of Andy Gibb: how he wasted his life and talent on drugs and died at 30. He went through a failed marriage, going broke and chemical dependency by the time he was 27 -- my age now!! His family begged him time and time again to get help, and by the time he did, the damage was done. Same goes for Karen Carpenter and her eating disorder: by the time she began eating again and put on weight, her internal organs couldn't take anymore, and it was too late. So so sad. :(

I'm sorry that you're going through this. It's heartbreaking watching our loved ones destroy their lives, and to feel so powerless to help them. I know what you're going through. It used to tear me up something terrible. All those years of worrying, and now a lifetime of grieving.
