And I HATE the name she's chosen. What do you do? I'm trying to be polite, but I really don't like it and she keeps asking what I think. I'm thinking I have 3 months to talk her out of it.

What should I do? I've always noticed that people feel really protective over the names they've picked, and get offended if you don't like them. Any advice?

There's nothing really you can do. It is their child and it's him or her that will have to live with it.

It can't be that bad...

Just tell her you don't like it if she asks, it can't be that big of a deal. Maybe it'll offend her a little, but she asked. I'm sure she'll get over it quickly anyway.

What is it, by the way? Just curious. :p

Ahh, people hate the baby girl's name I have chosen for when I have children, but I'm set on it anyway. I mean, it's nothing like Apple or anything, so I don't know why it's hated so much

What's the name your friend chose?

I like the name Persephone Marie [from the greek myth] or Adrienne Marie.

 I know I am too!

Tara and Courtnee, I love the names you've chosen. Very unique and pretty. I've chosen Sophie. I've always liked that name, but my whole family hates it. Not like that's going to stop me though lol.

I'm a believer in white lies to spare someone's feelings. You could just say something along the lines of, "It's not a name I would choose, but you and Henry like it, and that's all that matters." Naming a child is a very personal decision between a couple, and I doubt you can talk her out of it. If you go that route -- telling her you hate the name and trying to talk her out of it...all that will really be accomplished is that she knows you hate her child's name.

I went through this with my nephew and his wife. She's one of my best friends. If they had a boy, they were going to name him Bryce. I guess it's a real popular name these day. I hate the name. I just told her that I wasn't crazy over it, but I'm sure it would grow on me, once I grew to love him. Luckily, they had a girl, Emma. :)

Hmm.. touchy subject. I live in Springfield, MA, where I have heard everything from Shaniqua to Nirvani to Teshawn to LaQuindia to Uniquea to... Sarah. So I've basically heard at all. Chances are, it's not that bad. It won't be that bad if it's a popular name. If it's not, well.... what is it anyway?

I've liked that name ever since reading the Spooksville series when I was 8/9. Bryce was my favourite character.

Tara, good choice for Jordana Michelle! Especially the Michelle part, seeing as that's my name. :)

You may have to suck this one up. Naming a child is really nobody's business but the parents, no offense.

Xaria Amor. I think it's really pretentious. It also sounds terrible with her last name (but I'm not going to type that one, with my luck, she'll find it). She's trying to tell me that Xaria means 'princess' in Hebrew. Suri Cruise anyone?

I think you guys are right though. I'm probably just gonna have to suck it in. At least we found out it's a girl. If it was a boy she was gonna call it Thor.

None taken. She just asked my opinion - but I think when expectant parents say that, they don't really want an honest opinion - they want people to like it.

It's really not your place to tell someone, anyone, that the name they chose for their child is something you hate. Imagine the feelings that may cause between you? Is it worth it? Besides, some people choose family members name to name their child or they choose a name that they thought of when they were younger and they are bent on having that as a name.

The only people this issue regards is the soon-to-be mother and the soon-to-be father, not you or anyone else. Sorry. This is one of those situations where the words BUTT OUT needs to be said.

I am sure Julia Roberts and her director husband would not have wanted any one telling them how stupid and ******** their son's name would be. PHINNEUS anyone?

I actually like it, yes, it is different, but very pretty, especially the name Zaira, spelled with an X...:)

I agree, Xaria isn't that bad - but it's quite a mouthful with her last name. She's decided to use her maiden name which is about 20 letters long and I can't even spell it. Her fiance's name is one syllable - it'd sound a lot better. But she's determined that her maiden name should live on...

That's exactly why I've kept my mouth shut for 6 months already. I'd never tell her I hate the name, just wondered if I should say something.

The only thing you want to say is that she should think of another name...so what is the "something" that you should say?

Huh?

I was asking for advice, since she did ask for my opinion. If there was some polite way of hinting that it's not my favorite name in the world - or just keep my mouth shut. So far, I've kept my mouth shut.

That's the best thing to do. If she keeps poking and prodding, then stick with a small lie and just say something you would want to hear if it was you asking your friend abt the name you chose for your baby.

that's always a good thing, to have a unique name. they need to come up with new names because the amount of Ryan's and Emily's there are in my classes is insane. last semester 4 out of 14 people in my Studio class were named Ryan. that was fun whenever my TA was like "Ryan?" and four people turned around. and there's always a bunch of Emily/Emmas. kinda makes me glad my parents named me Chris, common, but too many people I know with it.

Hey, hey, hey, Emily is a fine name!

Don't you remember who you're talking too? :o ;)

I agree though, there are way too many of us Emilys out there. But there are plenty of good names out there that are real, established ones and aren't as popular.

I think Phinneus and Hazel are lovely names. There was a girl at my school called Hazel.

I also liked the name "Suri" too. It's different, but I don't think it's a bad name. I think it sounds very pretty.

Hazel reminds me of old ladies or that housekeeper on that old sitcom show HAZEL. :p

I think Hazel is okay, it is actually kinda of cute, but I would never name my daughter that; actually, I was seriously thinking about this topic the other day, and if I were to have a daughter, her name would be Alexandra Michelle; my family would never allow me to name her Jordana; and, another thing, I think she would go through life, having people pronouncing her name incorrectly, and I went through that, with people calling me, Terra, my whole life!!!

I hate the name Hazel, but that's mostly because it's what we named our dopey cat who lives under the shed

I love the name Alexandra!
