View Full Version : No wonder Lucy was always in trouble with finances...
Ireneparalegal 03-03-2007, 10:47 PM Ok here I go, as some of us stated in another thread, Lucy would buy props for bets, etc. such as the time Lucy and Ethel wanted to be in the society league, they went and bought things to churn butter, Lucy bought a bathtub, and other items just for the bet they made with the boys abt how their grandmothers didn't need modern appliances and so forth.
What other "useless" items did Lucy buy?
-In the episode "Be a Pal" Lucy decorated the living room to give it that Cuban feel, such as a mule...where on earth did Lucy rent that animal from and how much do you think that cost????
The five little boys that were supposed to represent Ricky's five brothers...did Lucy go to "rent-a-kid" or something? Hmmmm...
The outfit she wore to lip-synch to that Carmen Miranda song.
And all that miscellaneous stuff...
-In the Hollywood episode regarding John Wayne's footprints, they had to buy that big metal tub, the hammer, the bucket, the cement, etc.
Kazza 03-04-2007, 12:01 AM Also the baby elephant , renting Superman for her son's b-day and getting all the costumes for the snobby women club they applied for.
Ireneparalegal 03-04-2007, 12:04 AM In the Men Are Messy episode, she has to make the apt. look a mess, so she got all that junk.
Madame X 03-05-2007, 04:22 PM She also got stuff for "Lucy Hires a Maid," "The Kleptomaniac," "Ricky Thinks He's Going Bald" and all those kids' toys in "The Ricardos Change Apartments."
She was able to get a reducing machine, rivet gun, wheelchair, film splicing machine, 100 pound tuna, a set of golf clubs, crystal ball, etc.
What about the plays she wrote: "Lucy Writes a Play," "Home Movies"
and "The Operetta." Where did she get all that stuff?
If you added up the cost of her costumes and disguises alone, the Ricardos would be bankrupt.
Ireneparalegal 03-05-2007, 06:31 PM Let's not forget the outfits the four of them bought/rented when the girls went to charm school. First the girls had those dresses, then the boys had those costumes.
Lodee 03-05-2007, 10:40 PM What about all those kids in the episode where that grocer liked her and came over for dinner? Or the stroller in the Freezer episode?
Oh, in the Operetta she got the stuff by writing a bad check. LOL
NOVARick 03-08-2007, 12:17 PM What about all those kids in the episode where that grocer liked her and came over for dinner? Or the stroller in the Freezer episode?
Oh, in the Operetta she got the stuff by writing a bad check. LOL
What about all those kids she had hanging out in her bedroom in "Lucy Plays Cupid"? What did she do to induce them to come to her apartment and wait in her bedroom that whole time she was having dinner? In "Men Are Messy," as mentioned above, where did she get all that junk? And what about the chickens? The last time I was in New York City, I didn't notice any chickens anywhere.
Ireneparalegal 03-08-2007, 08:37 PM What about all those kids she had hanging out in her bedroom in "Lucy Plays Cupid"? Ok, we have a mule, chickens and a baby elephant...in NEW YORK CITY???  And no animal poop??? hard to believe...
As for the kids you mentioned in Lucy Plays Cupid are they the same kids she "borrowed" in the post that I mentioned above? (the episode where Lucy is trying to make Ricky feel like he is in Cuba)
When Lucy and Ricky fought and she pretended that she was hit by a bus...those bandages, all the items she threw out the window, those Henna bottles must have cost a pretty penny to just "throw out".
The episode when Lucy was trying to convince Ricky they needed a bigger apartment, she had a house full of toys. And that huge slide, how did she get it into her house? My God.
Madame X 03-09-2007, 02:21 AM The episode when Lucy was trying to convince Ricky they needed a bigger apartment, she had a house full of toys. And that huge slide, how did she get it into her house? My God.
And if they were so broke, how and why did she buy a 2-wheel bike, a tricycle, a scooter, bow and arrow set, electric train, teeter-totter and chinese checkers when the kid can't even stand up yet?
drewfussclass101 03-11-2007, 07:08 PM Lucy did not rent superman for little rickys party. If you remember Ricky knew "superman" George Reeves from out in hollywood so he did it as a favor for Ricky
Ireneparalegal 03-11-2007, 07:15 PM And if they were so broke, how and why did she buy a 2-wheel bike, a tricycle, a scooter, bow and arrow set, electric train, teeter-totter and chinese checkers when the kid can't even stand up yet?
Exactly. Ricky is telling her we can't afford it, yet she can buy all that crap?
NOVARick 03-12-2007, 01:41 AM Ok, we have a mule, chickens and a baby elephant...in NEW YORK CITY???  And no animal poop??? hard to believe...
Speaking of animal poop, did you ever see that "Carol Burnett Show" blooper where Carol was singing with a horse in the background, and the horse started pooping? The audience started busting up laughing and poor Carol looked so nervous and confused, with no idea what was going on behind her . . . until she turned around, then she burst out laughing.
As for the kids you mentioned in Lucy Plays Cupid are they the same kids she "borrowed" in the post that I mentioned above? (the episode where Lucy is trying to make Ricky feel like he is in Cuba)
Good question, but I'm wondering what Mrs. Trumble had to say about that. She had enough trouble putting up with one baby. I'm surprised she didn't throw a fit at the Mertzes when all those kids came walking into the building.
When Lucy and Ricky fought and she pretended that she was hit by a bus...those bandages, all the items she threw out the window, those Henna bottles must have cost a pretty penny to just "throw out"..
Not to mention the fines she might have had to pay for littering, or the jail time she might have needed to serve for killing someone on the street below who got knocked in the head by a henna bottle
Yeah, all the fines, plus jail time Lucy and the others would have had, including when they were actually in jail when they thought the actor tenants were going to blow up the capital (plus shooting off guns, destroying a door, et al), and Lucy would have faced a charge of abduction for tying up the dancer in the broom closet when she was trying to lose weight to fit into the costume, and all the debris and noise when they were trying to make the Mertzes let them out of their lease... I don't think the cops at their precinct would have mistaken Lucy and Ethel for Stickyfingers Sal and Pickpocket Pearl-- they should have had a familiarity already with Licentious Lucy and Eavesropping Everpresent Ethel.
Ireneparalegal 03-14-2007, 07:50 PM tdr & NOVARick, those are great observations. I too wonder abt the stuff Lucy threw out the window like the henna bottles. She fell onto an awning which explains why she wasn't hurt, however, the items she threw out obviously landed on the ground.
As for the comment abt the Carol Burnett show, YES! I RECALL THAT ONE! That was hilarious! Ahhhhh, memories of great television.
As far as the tenants who Lucy thought were spies really must have cost a pretty penny since Fred told Lucy that she would have to pay for all the damages and the loss of the tenants' since they moved out because of what Lucy had assumed. Poor Ricky, he was really in the poor house.
Remember when Ricky was buying that house in Connecticut and Lucy didn't want to move so she and the Mertzes scared the hell outta that couple, remember how the man raised the price of the deposit on the house PLUS "punitive damages" for the hell that Lucy put them through?
NOVARick 03-14-2007, 08:53 PM I think we ought to start a new thread about all the reasons Lucy Ricardo should be in prison. Lucy once feared Ricky was going to murder her, but if Ricky really wanted her out of his life, all he'd have to do is call the police and have her arrested: Lucy has a bigger rap sheet than Sticky Fingers Sal herself. Think about it: theft, assuming false identities (and identities of other people), disturbing the peace, trespassing, spying. I'm sure this could be a very long list. And I'd like to understand why are we so much in love with this person who has so little regard for the law?

:brent
Because she could "get away with it". ;)
Brieannas21 03-14-2007, 09:50 PM I'm coming to Lucy's defense
Maybe Lucy got some of her items from friends who were in show business. Also Ethel and Fred were in vaudeville, so they could have had friends who had lots of props on hand. Also she could have bought some of those things and then returned them when she was finished.
Just throwing out some ideas.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Should we be ashamed of ourselves? ;)
NOVARick 03-15-2007, 01:34 AM I'm coming to Lucy's defense
You know you could get in a lot of trouble for that.
Ireneparalegal 03-16-2007, 12:58 PM You know you could get in a lot of trouble for that.
Ireneparalegal 03-21-2007, 02:37 PM In the Lucky Buck episode, we see Ricky telling Fred and Ethel what amount of money needs to be paid back for the damages to the laundry mat, not including the amount for the taxi fare, the ticket the cab driver received for speeding and whatever amount of money Ricky paid for using an employees' uniform so he could get onto the laundry mat property.
Ireneparalegal 03-23-2007, 11:06 PM What about all those kids in the episode where that grocer liked her and came over for dinner? Or the stroller in the Freezer episode?
Oh, in the Operetta she got the stuff by writing a bad check. LOL
Also abt the Freezer episode, all that meat they bought! The bill was over $400! Not to mention the $50 for hauling that freezer to the apt building basement.
mrs.gingerhinkley 03-24-2007, 05:08 PM "The Million Dollar Idea"-
Lucy and Ethel loose a bunch on all that salade dressing!
Coffeecup 03-27-2007, 01:22 PM The Handy dandy vegetable slicer, the vacuum cleaner, the ? refrigerator, Fred bought the Washing Machine. One thing I noticed it took no time getting the washing machine and refrigerater bought and installed within the two hours Ethel and Lucy were gone.
Ireneparalegal 04-09-2007, 04:56 PM In the episode when Lucy buys new furniture, Ricky takes the furniture to the Tropicana office and keeps it there til Lucy can buy it back from him. So, Lucy tries doing her own perms, makes her own dress, etc. to save money.
It surely cost a pretty penny to fix the damage she did to her hair, not to mention the cost of fixing that carpet she damaged by cutting out the pattern on it.
In the episode where Lucy and Ricky are going to be photographed and interviewed for the fan magazine, the day before that occurs, Lucy offers Ricky bacon OR eggs. A conversation ensues where Lucy has gone over her budget, etc. However, for the next day when the interviewer comes over at breakfast time, Lucy has a wonderful array of breakfast dishes to offer. I guess her budget went out the window at dinner time as well since she had made shrimp cocktail, steaks, and some other expensive things for dinner. Something that Ricky mentions to Lucy when the interviewer leaves to go to the bathroom.
Ireneparalegal 04-10-2007, 08:39 PM The girls buy Hansen's Dress Shop. $3000 it cost. $1500 of that was Lucy's money. The check bounced. Enough said.
In purchasing Hansen's Dress Shop, I thought Mrs. Hansen said she had heard 10% was a standard down payment, after she put on her act and asked, "...and how do you want to handle the down payment?" So Lucy's check should have been for $150-- or did Ethel say she couldn't come through with her share then, and maybe Lucy said she would cover the $300 and Ethel would owe her $150; I don't remember. Regardless, Lucy and Ethel both thought they would clear a lot more than that on their first day

I think you are right. :D But like you said, they thought they were going to be instant millionaires! No matter, Lucy had no business spending even 10 percent, considering her check bounced!
Ireneparalegal 06-27-2008, 12:19 PM In the HOME MOVIES episode, that somewhat elaborate western set. Not to mention the western costumes.
Those oversized hats in the Texas oil deal episode, not to mention the fur. I guess those could have been purchased with credit though since we never see that fur again.
Lodee 06-28-2008, 09:09 AM Maybe the costumes were from Fred's old vaudeville days like the trunk of costumes he had in the raise episode.
Ireneparalegal 06-30-2008, 05:58 PM  I knew someone would say that. ^^^ I thought of that too but how many costumes of such variety could the Mertzes actually have? I would think when they toured vaudeville, they used the same costumes for every show and it would be a minimum of styles since the show would be the same one they performed night after night. Much like how musicians today put on a concert on a tour, they have several wardrobe changes, but only limited since they have to be worn on a nightly basis.
I remember when Ethel had to ask for help with some costumes when she and Lucy were dressing up like other women in the BLACK WIG episode. No mention of the Mertzes' costumes.
Lodee 07-01-2008, 10:00 AM I remember when Ethel had to ask for help with some costumes when she and Lucy were dressing up like other women in the BLACK WIG episode. No mention of the Mertzes' costumes.
Good catch! And where did the costumes come from in Lucy's Swan Song?
Ireneparalegal 07-15-2008, 10:12 PM Good catch! And where did the costumes come from in Lucy's Swan Song?
I think she may have had a small trunk of costumes herself. Or they were really Ricky's trunk of costumes. But still, funny how when a costume is needed...THERE IT IS! She didn't need to rent one or buy one. The only time Lucy or Ethel did NOT have access to a costume was in the BLACK WIG episode but even then, Ethel didn't have to look very far to find someone else who had a "trunk of costumes."
Haunted_Armoire 07-15-2008, 10:24 PM I think she may have had a small trunk of costumes herself. Or they were really Ricky's trunk of costumes. :
I would pay good money to see an act with Ricky Ricardo dressed up in a Little Bo Peep hoop skirt and lamb chop panties. :happyface
Ireneparalegal 07-15-2008, 10:26 PM I would pay good money to see an act with Ricky Ricardo dressed up in a Little Bo Peep hoop skirt and lamb chop panties. :happyface
 Girl, you know what I mean...or don't you? I mean, that Ricky has a trunk of costumes from the Tropicana from previous shows. ;)

You missed my joke. The comments were about "Lucy's Swan Song" and you added:
I think she may have had a small trunk of costumes herself. Or they were really Ricky's trunk of costumes
I took that a step further, envisioning that Ricky had, in his trunk of costumes, the outfit Lucy wore in that ep. Like he was a tranny? Get it?
Ireneparalegal 07-17-2008, 10:19 PM ^^^Yes, I did get it. I knew you were playing on the fact that I had stated it was Ricky's costumes, hence, it was his little bo peep costume.
schoolmom 07-20-2008, 10:17 PM We can add SEVERAL acts of forgery, as well. In an episode
of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, Lucy is trying to win a horse
for Little Ricky. She sends in EVERYBODY'S name & address
that she knows! But what makes it bad is that apparently
she signs their names, as well. Even by her own admission!
And the thing is, she was trying to explain to Fred how the
horse was HERS, when he found out he'd won. She says
something about,"I sent in your name, I signed your name"
Leave it to Lucy, she could find an excuse for EVERYTHING!
Love the show, however.
