I know that many fans think that Roseanne had jumped the shark when they won the lottery, but am I the only one that ranks the lottery season as one of my favorites, I think that the it was starting to show its age in season 8, I think the changing the image completely was perfect. And their were many memorable moments in season 9. When Nick@Nite ran the marathons this past summer, I thought, wow, this isn't nearly as bad as its credited for.

Anyone agree.

It had some good episodes, one of my favorites is "Home for the Holidays", and several other episodes are pretty good. But, there are also many episodes I didn't care for, mainly the episodes where they travel to somewhere else in the country. They were mostly just not that funny, especially the episode with Darlene's demon seed baby..

Erm I have enjoyed all of the seasons. A few eps in season 9 were a little over the top but some were good. The way the show ended was brilliant, this for me tops the show/season off. Brilliant and very emotional in a way.

I don't think it was season 9, but one of the last episodes: I guess maybe season 6 or 7.. my favorite was when Roseanne was pregnant & the Lunch Box was having some competition across the street & the new place had a drive thru window & Martin Mull was explaining that to Roseanne & so she takes a toaster and smashes it thru the window. lmao, that was hilarious & the whole way it was done..

anyone else like that one as much as I did?

I'm a fan of Roseanne and I hate to admit, but I loathed Season 9. Every single episode. I can not think of one redeeming quality.

Wait ...... maybe that time ... nope, I have nothing for 'ya.

I LOOOOOOOVE Season 9, it's my favorite season. So quirky, so outrageous, and a type of humor you NEVER see on TV anywhere. It's just so different, I love every episode of it, I can't wait for the DVDs to come out, I hope she does a lot of commentaries so we can find out why she did what she did.

I have to agree about Season 9 being underrated. While it's certainly not the best, it's not BAD by any means. Yeah, the lottery story wasn't the greatest, but I liked that the Conners realized their lives were just as scrwed-up, even though they had money. Also, "The Miracle" is flat-out one of the best episodes of the entire series.

I Would Rather watch Roseanne Season 9 Over the Cosby Show Season 8 And All In The Family Season 9.
I Would Rater Watch The Jeffersons Season 11 And Home Improvemet Season 8 Over Roseanne Season 8
Don''t get me wrong i like Roseanne but some shows have better last seasons then other shows.

I think "The Miracle" would have been better for an hour long episode, they should have done a 2 parter for this one instead of the stupid merger thing, in my opinion.

I love Season 09 too. NICK@NITE plays less and less of those episodes every time the show reaches that point.

I think in season nine, you saw much less of the cast. Really all you saw was Roseanne, Jackie and DJ. Of the recurring cast you saw more of Leon, Bev and Mark. I think I counted that Becky was only in 7 episodes of the season, Dan was in 12, and Darlene was in 14. It didn't really show how the lottery affected the whole family, but only Dan in a bad way, Roseanne and Jackie. I think there were funny episodes in the season, and I did enjoy "Satan Darling" because of ABFAB, and the finale was the perfect way to end it. I do think that there were dumb episodes that season, but I believe every season of every show has its share of stinkers.

I hated some of it, but liked some of it. As a standalone season, it's HILARIOUS and had so many amazing comedic moments, but putting it with Seasons 1-8 ... it can't compare. It just didn't fit.

season 9 is good for what it is, but it's not comparable to the show at it's peak. I think the show had it's moments of camp earlier in the series, but not to the extent that middle America was scared off. Middle America ran like hell from the last season because shows like Ab Fab and the sort are too much for them. I enjoy season 9, but it's almost a totally different series from seasons 1-8.

Season 9 is great, nearly finished watching the season 9 DVD and my favourite episode form that whole series is the one where the networks want to do a story about Roseanne, the random swearing makes it even funnier with the cookoo noises covering it up.

On the video commentary on that episode Roseanne says to Michael Fishman "Did someone know that we were going to insert some of those words" so they must have actually used some swear words.

I finally saw season nine for the first time last month, after hearing the horror stories about how awful it was. And it's... not that bad. Some of the episodes were very touching (Dan's return, Darlene's baby, the finale), and I actually liked the off-the-wall humor. DJ actually acquires a personality in this season, & becomes an interesting character in his own right. And God help me, I laughed at Rosambo. There were some truly awful episodes (that wrestling one, OMG) but it's pretty watchable overall. It doesn't have the brilliance of early Roseanne, but it's still better than most sitcoms out there. And the finale just made up for it all.

I am about 8 episodes into season 9 at the mo. It is quite good but not the same show. The problem withb Roseanne is that the kids grew up. It was funnier when they had boyfriends etc. Later it just got too complicated to come up with stories to involve everyone. There is a lot to like in season 9 though...Ab Fab for starters.

Yeah, I just rewatched some season 9 episodes last night. I think the whole lottery storyline wasn't a bad idea, but it was executed poorly. Stuff like the spa episode, the prince Carlos episodes, Roseambo, combined with Dan missing lead to a rocky first half of the season. The second half of the season was much better. If John Goodman around all season and maybe if there were some better storylines, season 9 could've turned out very well.

I watched about the last 8 episodes of season 9 yesterday. God, I forgot how good it was. I only remembered the early episodes which although not bad were not the show I loved. I think from the Chrsitmas episode onwards the show started to get really good again, in fact better than season 8. And the finale was a great end to the season as well.

The only shame about the dvd sets is ALL of the edits due to music rights. Also, the extras are lacking. Amazing, they interview Roseanne and cut everything down to two 6 minute segments. I bet Roseanne went on for ages but all we get are a few sound bites.

Season 9 felt more like a spin-off than anything else. This is because after season 6, with the great story arc of David living with Darlene, the show began to slowly run out of ideas and storylines. Both season 7 and 8 had enough great episodes to be considered good seasons, even though Roseanne became a bit too mean and sarcastic, and both the writing and ideas declined slightly in quality.

But what happened in season 9, that didn’t happen in seasons 7 and 8, is that it undermined the very core of "Roseanne". The show was admirable for showing real people facing both emotional and financial issues. Yes, the Conner's still faced emotional problems in season 9, and money didn't fix that. But they didn't have financial problems, and that was the other half of what made “Roseanne” the show people loved. Even seeing the house remolded in fancy furniture made it unbearable to watch!

I admire Roseanne’s courage for taking a shot at something fresh, but it didn’t pay off. Aside from undermining the core of “Roseanne”, other problems were that the writing lacked the freshness and humor the early seasons had. The scenes did not seem rehearsed and were poorly executed. Many of the storylines were random, pointless and in some instances crossed over into fantasy. And when the storylines weren’t one of those, they were too melodramatic and depressing. The episodes were on either one extreme or the other, and it didn’t help that the execution and writing of them was of very poor quality. What made "Roseanne" great was it's ability to blend the two extremes perfectly, and it was lacking, 100%, in the final season.

Aside from this, the last episode was a cop out. I loved and adored the relationships created between Darlene and David, and between Becky and Mark, and for that to have been fake really frustrated me. The only touching part was that it was heartbreaking to realize Roseanne was left alone without Dan, and it was nice to see her sitting down and watching TV in the Conner house we grew to love and adore.

Honestly, I love “Roseanne”. It’s my favorite show. That’s why I consider season 9 a spin-off and not really a season of the show.

Season 9 The scenes did not seem rehearsed and were poorly executed.

You are right; the show was about blue coller workers and winning money changed that but I still liked season 9 more than 8 and more than I thought I would. I think in seasons 7 and 8 the show was running out of ideas because the kids grew so they had to cover different ground and everything wasn't contained to the Conner household.

There was one episode in season 9 in the 'new' house in which Roseanne and Jackie were talking at the place where the fireplace used to be (was it the Christmas episode?) and in the picture on the wall I swear you could see someone holding cue cards. Roseanne did say that they wrote some episodes late when John Goodman was available. Perhaps this was one of them.

I just have to bump this thread back up. I just watched the entire last season this weekend pretty much without stopping, just because I haven't touched it since I bought it-LOL, but quite honestly, this season wasn't as bad as I previously thought.

There were like phases to this season, though, which probably made some people turn away from it. I'll agree, winning the lottery wasn't the best idea, and those lottery episodes were bizarre and useless to a Roseanne fan, but overall the season was good. The first episode was great, and the second and third episodes weren't that bad (I loved the Jerry Springer scene in the third episode), but then the show hit rock-bottom with the "Roseambo" episode. It was completely stupid and made no sense - that, and the Satan episode and all the other "lottery vacation" episodes. The only one I could stand was the Martha's Vineyard episode, which kind of seemed like a normal Roseanne episode at heart.

The show definitely picked up though (believe it or not) when we learned that Dan had his affair. It was kind of surreal, but still had okay episodes throughout the plot. I as laughing hard in the episode where Roseanne was driving around town, learning that all her favorite places had changed - the Mother Cluckers Chicken scene was hilarious - as Dan was getting ready to leave.

The last half of the season was by far the best. "The Miracle" mademe cry the first few times I saw it, as it probably did with most hard-core Roseanne fans. The episode before it, where Roseanne and Dan reconcile, was definitely the most normal episode of the season to me. And I don't get what all the hate is towards to finale. I always put it as one of the best series finales ever, and I still feel that way.

Just thought I"d bring this up, because I haven't seen the final season in ages. And WOW, I just realized that I've been writing this thread for 7 minutes  :D

http://uproxx.com/tv/2014/11/the-full-story-behind-the-terribly-weird-final-season-of-roseanne/

By the end of its first season, Roseanne was the second most popular show on television. By season two, it hit number one, beating The Cosby Show by 200,000 viewers. The ABC blue collar sitcom would stay in the top-10 until season eight, when it dropped to #16. That’s when things got weird.

Perhaps if we understood the reasoning in the beginning it would have made more sense.
