When people think New York= NYC. They think NYC is the state or something. I was in Mexico and met this couple from the states that actually told me they "don't know where the state of Long Island is".

Yeah, it's confusing when the city is named after the state too. New York, NY.

I wish more people would do research when they travel elsewhere. I want to smack the next person who tells me Fargo is in Minnesota. :wallbang Oh, really? I've lived in North Dakota for almost 22 years and last time I checked, Fargo was found in ND. These people are thinking of Moorhead, MN. :crazy: (look at a map of ND/MN and you'll understand.)

This one time a woman told me that she didn't know that Oklahoma was a state. I was shocked by her stupidity.

Hm, I haven't gotten much of that, but I ALWAYS get asked if I'm Jewish when I tell people I'm from Long Island (I'm not, but they think I am).

I never got that myself, but I guess it is only natural to equate NY with NYC. The city is what gives the state its identity I think. Thinking Long Island is a state though is just plain dumb.

Yeah, I'm not from New York, but I've noticed a lot of people having to say New York State instead of New York to avoid confusion. :p
