View Full Version : Would you agree that this are the Worst Type of Episodes on ANY SITCOM?
TVFactFan 02-22-2007, 07:53 PM "Dream Sequence Episodes? I hated these type of eps on all my favorites shows and always just lost interest in watching the rest of the ep. Who else hates Dream Sequence Eps?
BTW: I created this thread because I was trying to watch Hangin with Mr. Cooper and there was a DREM SEQUENCE ep and I turned the channel

Now flashbacks eps are the ones I love-lol Never had a problem with them.

I hate them because all they do is make me want to see the episode again IN FULL. Also, any episode with a "twin" or look-a-like, like in A Different World. So stupid!

Well I can say that Good Times or sanford and son never had any flashback eps

They had other episodes that made them suck at times. Judith Cohen anyone?

Dream sequences or clip shows are the worst and just show the laziness of the writers.
Ireneparalegal 02-22-2007, 08:15 PM I read somewhere that clip shows were created so that the fans of the show could "re-live" those episodes without having to actually show the entire episode...or show the BEST OF each episode, which is really what they should be called.
Now, whether that is true or not, I tend to think that it is both, pure laziness and the fact they THINK WE WANT TO SEE THOSE SHOWS.

I agree, watching George and Louise in a Bind mademe want to see all those eps again-lol
catlover79 02-22-2007, 08:43 PM I don't mind if they have a retrospective (like right before the finales of shows like Cheers, ELR or Seinfeld) special, but as a regular episode, it's just lazy. Case in point: the finale of Full House was dedicated to flashbacks of Michelle. puke: Enough said!!
Ireneparalegal 02-22-2007, 09:09 PM I loved the two-episode that Cheers did with that gentleman, what's his name???? Anyways, that was good because they had the cast sitting in chairs on stage and had them talking abt the show while they showed snippets of different episodes. Now THAT was a good retrospective aka clip show aka best of show.

I agree somewhat. The Cosby show had some stupid!!! dream sequence episodes. That's kinda what made me had dreaming episodes. I also do hate flashback episodes.
BensonFan 02-22-2007, 09:52 PM Clip shows, flashbacks and dream episodes are thee worst.
I pretty much agree with this also. Remember Lucille Ball hosting a special 2-part clip show of Three's Company? Nothing against her, but I turn that one off everytime. Yuck!
Dream episodes...oh yeah, I absolutely HATE those. 99% of the time they are really off the wall (not unlike real dreams, I suppose, but I still hate these episodes). They never make a lasting impression with me.
Flashbacks, in my opinion, do tend to scream lack of creativity on the part of the writers. I guess writing new episodes gets difficult and stressful sometimes so this gives them a good excuse to take some time off, I guess. It's one thing if it's a quick flashback, which isn't so bad, but if the entire show is a flashback, forget it. Laziness. Next!
I also hate when characters reminisce (I'm not sure if this is technically considered a "flashback" if the footage wasn't shown on a previous episode). For example, on Benson, four of the characters sit around the kitchen table telling stories of the most influential person in their lives. As much as I love that show, that episode sucked flat out. I never watch it.
MikeLutton 02-22-2007, 10:35 PM Family Matters anyone they use dream sequences all chance they get and doll role person playing 2 people at once enough said.and Happy days fonzie dreaming he lost his cool turned in2 potsie need i saymore
friendsfan77 02-22-2007, 11:08 PM Dream sequences... for me it depends on the dream, though a lot of these I haven't found to be that satisfactory.
Clip shows... depends on how the show handles them.
Yooch 02-22-2007, 11:12 PM I hate to say it, but dream sequences, flashbacks, a character's twin, an old west motif--in many cases (not all, of course) can be an indication the show's about to 'jump the shark'.
Brian Damage 02-22-2007, 11:18 PM Family Ties are the reigning champs of retrospectives and clip shows. lol
Janice 02-23-2007, 12:42 AM I never cared for dream or clip shows. Flashback shows, if done right, can be enjoyable to me. Two examples -- Wings; when they show how Joe met Fay on an airplane. Another one is Becker; when we see the day that Becker met Margaret.
TVFactFan 02-23-2007, 02:06 AM The Flashback eps on Fresh Prince were not that Good
I have to agree, that dream sequence episodes are not very enjoyable. I am thinking about all the shows I watch which had dream sequence episodes and I did not enjoy any of them.
Ant-Lox 03-03-2007, 01:27 PM I like the dream sequences, and the trips down memory lane.
James 03-03-2007, 11:50 PM Clip shows, flashbacks and dream episodes are thee worst.
You couldn't have said it any better, Irene.
When I came on to this thread I immediately thought of those "dream" episodes on two shows: Perfect Strangers in which the cousins look into the future after Balki bought the Chicago Cubs, and Jennifer was the only one not to age, and Laverne and Shirley which also looked into the future--Laverne's sweater had a script "L" that went all the way down to her dress, LOL! On the other hand, the Family Matters episode where Carl dreamed it was 2009 (in real life it was 1994), and Steve and Laura were married with a lot of kids that looked like Urkel himself, was pretty funny.
Perfect Strangers was also a violator of having too many "flashbacks" episodes as well.
The Wonder Years had one episode, "Broken Hearts and Burgers", which was pretty much a clip show after Winnie caught Kevin flirting with the waitress at the burger store. However, the one clip sequence in the episode where they graduated junior high school ("Graduation", I think) wasn't nearly as lame.

Like I said, it is a rarity when a dream sequence is even remotely funny. King of Queens has the best dream sequences. I remember that Laverne and Shirley dream where Laverne dreamed she was FAT.

I remember that Family Matters episode...I think I even still have it on tape somewhere!!
Some of them can be funny. But remember Dallas when they said an entire
season was a dream, now that was really nuts. But that was the only way
they could bring Bobby back from the dead, It was still stupid.
How many clip episodes did Family Ties have? They even lampshaded this when Justine Bateman hosted Saturday Night Live.
Yong Fang 04-13-2013, 09:01 AM I have some stray "I Love Raymond" DVD's with a clip show in it, but they did it in a very classy way, getting celebrities and average people to talk about their favorite episode and which one touched them the most.
I do not usually have an issue with "clip episodes". But it is a cheap way to push out one more episode without any input.
Crusinforabrusin 08-28-2016, 10:08 AM I enjoy flashback and dream sequence episodes. What I don't like is episodes that focus on singing the entire episode or episodes that take place hundreds of years before the Tv show
TVFactFan 08-28-2016, 12:09 PM I enjoy flashback and dream sequence episodes. What I don't like is episodes that focus on singing the entire episode or episodes that take place hundreds of years before the Tv show
Flashback is fine but those Dream sequence eps are DOGSH*T
Torgo 08-28-2016, 01:00 PM Outside of Gilligan's Island I'm not a fan of dream sequence episodes.
Edward216 08-29-2016, 04:01 AM Well with the M.A.S.H. episode all of the characters' dreams were horrifying, sad, or depressing. Everybody hates that one LOL.
Ed.
bmasters9 08-29-2016, 07:07 AM I loved the two-episode that Cheers did with that gentleman, what's his name???? They did the same thing on Barney Miller, with Hal Linden, Max Gail, et al. in chairs on stage at ABC on the 12th Precinct set in remembrance of Nick Yemana, played by the late Jack Soo, who had died in the fifth season (1978-79).
I like dreams sequence for the most part, the Dick van Dyke show for one had some great ones. I also think Family Matters had one or two really good ones. But on the other hand some shows had bad ones like MASH.
tlc38tlc38 08-29-2016, 09:41 AM I'm not too fond of dream sequence episodes especially that horrid fairy tale episode of "The Cosby Show"....and also the 'men are pregnant' episode.
Flashback episodes are ok if done right and if the flashbacks are new, original content we've never seen before.
danderson400 08-29-2016, 09:54 AM personally, i don't like it when one of the characters sings, and that goes for any TV show. McMurphy or Laurette on China Beach was a prime example, so was Marie on Just the Ten of Us
Patty Duke 08-29-2016, 12:00 PM Clip shows, flashbacks and dream episodes are thee worst.
I agree!
Anna Karenina 08-29-2016, 12:57 PM TAXI was the best at varying the show's usual format such as when they all got new jobs and Alex was a security guard and going crazy talking to himself in the monitor, Jim was a vacuum salesman defiling some poor lady's carpet, Louie became successful in the financial world but grossed out everyone working with him. Elaine became a secretary to a poor guy who was trying to stay undercover and not be noticed and she inadvertenly ended up getting him fired. I loved the old guy in that episode, so funny.
Also, I like when the cabbies sang "The Lullaby of Broadway" and I say as a straight woman that Marilu Henner was unbelievably sexy in her mini tuxedo and they all had a lot of fun in that number. Interesting at the end when the fantasy faded out that it became serious again with Louie as the dispatcher calling out the names of the cab drivers.
If it is well executed I don't mind at all when they step out of their current situations and do something a little different here and there. They are just sitcoms after all, how seriously are we supposed to take things?
As for the clip shows, yeah well Family Ties got rightfully parodied on SNL for abusing the privilege and I love how they worked the Jefferson's clip show into the parody. "Do you remember the time, George when we were tied up?":D
I wonder if Gary David Goldberg was mad that they made fun of them like that? At any rate, why did Justine Bateman fall out of favor in show business, she was like the heiress apparent to Valerie Bertinelli. ;)
tvfan25 08-29-2016, 02:05 PM I never liked the Everybody Loves Raymond episode where they had celebrities talk about the show. I skip that one every time it's on. I never liked when they would go into daydream sequences like on That 70's Show or even The Parent 'Hood. I don't really mind flashback episodes (especially The Golden Girls-those are the best!), but I don't care for dream sequences about something stupid that will never happen. I also refuse to watch The Drew Carey Show's live episodes. I tried to watch one. Couldn't watch the rest of it, it was just so stupid!
