View Full Version : Best sitcom boss?
catlover79 02-19-2007, 07:04 PM Hands down, Barney Miller. Level headed, compassionate, caring and polite, he was the perfect boss. However, he didn't put up with any crap from his cops and wasn't afraid to get in their faces when need be. He had their respect though, and Wojo especially really looked up to Barney.

That reminds me of Dr. Bob Hartley and Dick Louden, both played by the great Bob Newhart. Both characters were pretty wimpy and let their employees walk all over them. In Bob's case, the therapy group walked all over him too. A case of the inmates running the asylum. It would be fun to work for those characters to see what I could get away with!! Poor guys. ;)

I agree. There have been several good bosses on TV, but Barney Miller was the best, having great leadership qualities--for the reasons you stated. Even Inspector Luggar regarded him as a mentor! You're absolutely correct.
I'd also like to put in honorable mentions for Andy Taylor, Andy Travis (WKRP), Howard Cunningham, Julia Sugarbaker and Sherman T. Potter--all of whom I thought were good bosses.
KurtfromPitts 02-21-2007, 03:03 PM Mel Cooley on "Dick Van Dyke". Liked the interactions between him and Morey Amsterdam. [Yecch!]
catlover79 04-07-2007, 03:11 PM Yes, Andy Travis of WKRP was a good boss too, plus he was CUTE!! :eyes:  I wouldn't mind going to work every day if I had a boss who looked like him. ;)
