View Full Version : Best and worst cars owned by TV characters
catlover79 02-18-2007, 11:06 PM Best: I loved the Chevy convertibles driven by Samantha and Darrin Stephens on Bewitched. Since Chevy was one of the show's main sponsors (Quaker Oats being the other), Elizabeth Montgomery and her then-husband, director/producer Bill Asher received cars from them.
Worst: Steve Urkel's BMW Isetta (sp?) on Family Matters. I'm 5'8 and would never, ever fit into a car that small. Forget about driving on the freeway next to the SUVs and big rigs!! No way!!
Best - Mary Richards Mustang, thats also the first car I ever had, mine was
dark blue.
Worst - The Partridge Family Bus, can you imagine trying to park that
monster?
dawsongirl 02-19-2007, 02:22 AM Best- Any of the Vettes that Tod and Buz had on Route 66.
The GTO Tony Nelson had on I Dream of Jeannie was neat too, though a bit too large for my tastes, but still a nice car.
Worst- That old car they were going to drive to California on I Love Lucy. lol
That AMC...Matador I think...that Pete Malloy drove on the last season of Adam-12. That was one of the ugliest things ever made. AMC made some fugly automobiles.
Chocoholic 10-21-2007, 01:36 PM I think the worst sitcom car is the Flintstone's car. You'd really hurt your feet.
88survivor 10-21-2007, 04:23 PM Best: The General Lee
Worst: Pee-wee's motorbike scooter with no seat cushion...who would ride that thing? Referring to Pee-Wee's Playhouse...
Mikado 10-21-2007, 05:28 PM Best
Maxwell Smart's Sunbeam Tiger and the Chief's GT-350 Cobra (Get Smart) also the VW Karmann-Ghia (Although, he only drove that in the credits, never on the show)
The Monkeemobile (The Monkees)
The Futura-based 1960s Batmobile (Batman)
Tony's GTO (I dream of Jeannie)
Richies Ford 'vert (Happy Days)
Worst
Ralph's roadster pick-up Ford (man that thing was ugly, i hate street rods) (Happy Days)
Columbo's butt-ugly 1959 Peugeot 'vert (Columbo)
catlover79 10-21-2007, 05:29 PM The Cunningham's Desoto on Happy Days was one of the worst ones.
One of the best was that little sports car Larry Tate drove on Bewitched.
Oh yes, the DeSoto was pretty ugly. My grandparents had one back in the day.
Mikado 10-21-2007, 05:37 PM Oh yes, the DeSoto was pretty ugly. My grandparents had one back in the day.
on the other hand the 1942 DeSoto had a pretty cool grill with hidden headlamps! :D
Since lots of my faves have ben mentioned, I add a few others ;
Best - B.A.'s Kick ass GMC van from the A-Team
Worst - Gilligan's bamboomobile from Gilligan's Island.
Pedal power? Surely the Professor could have built an internal combustion engine out of something...
;)
comedyfreak 10-21-2007, 07:10 PM Best-The Munster Koach Herman drove.
Worst-The first car Fred bought for the California trip.
Ireneparalegal 10-21-2007, 07:13 PM Worst: Steve Urkel's BMW Isetta (sp?) on Family Matters. I'm 5'8 and would never, ever fit into a car that small. Forget about driving on the freeway next to the SUVs and big rigs!! No way!!

tv star collector 10-21-2007, 07:21 PM Best-The Munster Koach Herman drove.
Worst-The first car Fred bought for the California trip.
I love the Munster Koach! It's my favorite TV car (I even have a toy model replica of it). A close second would be Adam West's Batmobile. Both were
designed by George Barris, who also created the Monkeemobile and cars for
DAKTARI, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, KNIGHT RIDER and THE A-TEAM.

I also have the replica of the Munster Koach too! I also love the Batmobile and wish they would release a replica of it. I do have the Batmobile replica hotwheel it's small but better than nothing.
sunshinefizzy 10-22-2007, 12:42 PM Greg Brady's car was a piece of sh$t.
Uncle Jesse on Full House had a really beautiful red convertible (I think) that I think he named Sally. That being said was it a mustang??? I don't know but it was a very nice car.

also the Clampetts old truck on THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES.
Karen64 10-22-2007, 10:58 PM Coolest, IMO--the Monkeemobile from The Monkees
Worst--the old van that Chico lived in, on Chico and The Man

Yeah, it was a mustang. And a lot cooler than that Taurus Danny drove.
dawsongirl 10-23-2007, 08:58 PM You know, for a group of guys who were supposedly scraping by, the Monkees sure had one expensive car.
catlover79 10-23-2007, 09:01 PM You know, for a group of guys who were supposedly scraping by, the Monkees sure had one expensive car.
:yeahthat  Not to mention gas, oil, upkeep, insurance...we should all have it that bad.
mrs.gingerhinkley 10-25-2007, 07:40 PM The Best - Bo & Luke Duke's General Lee on The Duke's of Hazard
The Worst - Jethro's old truck on The Beverly Hillbillies
that's exactly what I was going to say!!!
while it wasn't the most practical; it was my favorite: the 'car' the Professor must have rigged up from bamboo and palm leaves on Gilligan's Island...
try driving that on the freeway!
Zebra 3 10-26-2007, 01:41 AM Some favourites:
Batmobile - Batman (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=363)
Monkeemobile - The Monkees (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=145)
Torino - Starsky & Hutch (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=556)

Worst: Steve Urkel's BMW Isetta (sp?) on Family Matters. I'm 5'8 and would never, ever fit into a car that small. Forget about driving on the freeway next to the SUVs and big rigs!! No way!!
If you can't fit in a BMW Isetta at 5'8", then I know I can't fit at 5'11 1/2." And I already knew I couldn't fit in a King Midget, and have serious doubts about the MG Midget, and many old Hondas.

The Isetta is such a goofy-looking little car, anyway. My brother has worked at car dealerships the last few years and actually once sat in an Isetta. He said it was the most uncomfortable car he's ever been in, and he's taller than me!!
Skywalker 10-28-2007, 11:26 PM Best:
The General Lee - The Dukes of Hazzard
KITT - Knight Rider
The Batmobile - Batman
The Striped Tomato - Starsky and Hutch
Worst:
The Bluth Company "stair car" - Arrested Development

You can laugh at the Isetta all you want, but, that ugly little "egg" SAVED BMW*!!!
*After WW2, the BMW company , which had made planes for the Luftwaffe (And which was no longer allowed to, by the surrender terms) was in dire straights, but, the little Isetta sold well in a post-war Europe where it was still a step up from a motor scooter, for those who couldnt afford a VW.

Thanks for the info, Mikey - I never knew all that. However, I still think it's a silly-looking car.
I think KITT is a really cool car. I wouldn't mind the voice of KITT (aka William Daniels) talking to me as I drove around town. One of my friends said her first crush was on David Hasselhoff, but thinks it was just because of the car.

You may be right, but that doesn't make it the best car in the world to drive. Messerschmitt was in the same boat as BMW, but at least BMW made normal cars too.

My dad owns a B and a Midget and he's 5'8", 5'9". The seat in the B is pushed all the way to the back so I think anyone much taller wouldn't fit. At 5'4", the seat has to be pushed up for me, but not too far or I'm too close to the steering wheel.
Not that that had anything to do with the topic at hand....

Well it's better than a scooter in the rain anyway. And a little warmer in the winter. But then VW Beetles were horrid too...maybe a bicycle would have been best.

True, but, had BMW had only the "normal" cars to sell in post-war Europe, they wouldnt have sold enough cars to survive. Much as GM wouldnt likely survive if they only sold Cadillacs
D-Dey 02-29-2008, 11:13 AM Hey, if you want to add animated cars to your list, Trent Lane of "Daria" had a 1973 Plymouth Satellite that was always breaking down. On the other hand it was a collectible, so maybe it wasn't the worst after all.
Big C 02-29-2008, 01:52 PM I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Al Bundy's Dodge.
An 80s Guy 02-29-2008, 08:19 PM The Worst was in my opinion was al's Dodge on Married with children that everyone hated except for him.
D-Dey 03-03-2008, 11:05 AM I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Al Bundy's Dodge.
Me too. Incidentally, Al's "Dodge" was really a Plymouth Duster... at least in one episode.

megamanj2004 03-03-2008, 02:39 PM BEST:
Grand Torino - Starsky & Hutch
B.A.'s Van - The A-Team
General Lee - Dukes of Hazzard
K.I.T.T. - Knight Rider
The Batmobile - Batman; gotta love the technology for the 1960s
The Black Beauty - The Green Hornet; so it was mostly a Chrysler painted over w/ jet black? I did love the fact that it could see things miles ahead, leaves traps out from the sides of the car, and also those cool-looking green headlights, too!
Thomas Magnum's Car - Magnum, P.I.; one of the few reasons why I watched Magnum was to watch Magnum drive it through the Hawaiian Estate
WORST:
Al Bundy's Plymouth Duster - Married w/ Children; that is one fugly car!
Fred Flintstone's Car - The Flinstones; not even Dr. Scholl's can cure that big of athletes' foot burns from all that foot-peddling...LOL!
Jim Rockford's Car - The Rockford Files; not b/c it's ugly, but mostly b/c it has a tendency to lose a tire often and the way those back windows don't hold well at times during a gun-fight.
Homer Simpson's Car - The Simpsons; I see that there are some posts continuing w/ the animated cars so I nominated Homer Simpson's car on the worst list, b/c it ran out of gas, it's outdated, and no one would really buy his car too much.
Fred Sanford's Pick-Up Truck - Sanford and Son; I would sing the show's theme song to it, but it certainly won't score you any cool points with the ladies.
Mikado 03-03-2008, 03:49 PM The Batmobile - Batman; gotta love the technology for the 1960s
Ironically, the show car that the Batmobile started out as was 1955 Ford-based
megamanj2004 03-04-2008, 02:20 AM Another one I'll also add:
Steve MacGarett's 1968 Mercury - Hawaii Five-O; before they traded it in for that lamer 1974 version of the Mercury.
