View Full Version : Season 3 DVD
Lee G 02-01-2007, 01:45 PM I got the set yesterday, upon unwrapping the box and pulling the cases out I heard one of the discs sliding around inside the case. It was disc 3, I looked on back of the disc and it was scuffed up in a number of places. But so far the disc seems to play OK. It still pisses me off, they need to use better cases for the DVD's instead of these cheap ones that allow the discs to come loose while the sets are being shipped to stores and sent out thru mail order.
One other thing I noticed, when watching JEANNIE OR THE TIGER- the shades of color waver back and forth. It's subtle, but especially noticeable during a scene where Jeannie and her "sister" are talking in the living room. Look at the dark brown wall in the background of that scene, and you'll see what I mean.

Some people are reporting cuts in the episodes, as though Sony included syndicated versions of the episodes rather than originals. Have you noticed this?

I haven't noticed any cuts or edits in the episodes, they all look complete to me.
storrs19 02-08-2007, 08:45 AM In episode #9 where Tony'e mother visits the following edit takes place:
When she goes to sleep on the sofa Jeannie does the following to try and wake her up:
1. Play a trumpet
2. Play a bass drum
3. Crash two symbols together
4. Fire a canon
The part where Jeannie plays the bass drum is missing here. It goes from her playing the trumpet to crashing the symbols. If you look closely after the camera switches from looking at Tony's mom we see Jeannie put the drum sticks down and we can see the bass drum sitting on the floor. Also Tony's mom mentions a drum being banged in her dream. Now I admit this is a 10 second edit at most but still it is an edit.

Good catch there. I haven't seen that episode yet, I'll have to watch that one later and check it out also. So this probably means there are small, subtle cuts in some of the other episodes also. Damn those scoundrels at Sony. Perhaps they don't want people to have all the episodes uncut, so they delete a few seconds here and there. They probably figure most people won't notice the edits other than fans who know the episodes very well.

hmmm....so much for "complete" seasons!:(

storrs19,
I watched that episode, and you are precisely correct. The part where Jeannie beats on the drum is absent from the DVD. Now I would like to know the real reason why Sony would go to the trouble and delete a few seconds from selected episodes. It makes no sense, unless for some reason they don't want the people to have all the episodes uncut. When you look at the box for the third season, it says "the complete third season" which simply means you are getting every episode. It mentions nothing about uncut episodes, so they covered their bases. Those sneaky scoundrels. I wonder which other episodes are chopped like this, MEET MY MASTERS MOTHER is likely not the only one.
Lee G 02-09-2007, 03:25 PM I just read some reviews on amazon.com, and a few people have reported the BOOTSIE NIGHTINGALE episode has a jittery picture thru most of the episode. Throw in the fact that Sony screwed up with the DVD cases and has episode 13 listed on disc 3 when the episode is actually on disc 2. Also include the discovery of a scene chopped from MEET MY MASTERS MOTHER, and it seems this is starting to indicate a rather poor effort by Sony with the IDOJ season three DVD. Perhaps they were rushed to get the DVD's out, but there should have been better quality control and inspection of the set prior to release. The fact that they have deleted a small scene from at least one episode is inexcusable by itself.
And has anyone noticed that they seem to have used the same opening credits for all the episodes? This was the 1967-68 season, the copyright year on the opening titles shows MCMLXVI (1966) which is from season two. And if you listen close, a note gets skipped during the playing of the theme song. This occurs in all the episodes. So apparently they just kept using the same title sequence over and over. Thumbs down to Sony, they really should recall this release, fix the problems, make everything right then reissue it.
ercjncpr 02-09-2007, 10:36 PM Looks like a sloppy scanning/transfer job on the Bootsie episode, which means that Sony is getting downright careless on its classic TV releases:(
ercjncpr 02-09-2007, 10:45 PM According to the Internet Movie Database, the My Son The Genie episode marked the first post-Gilligan TV sitcom appearance for Bob Denver

I haven't noticed problems with their other releases, but they sure did a sloppy job with IDOJ season three. I won't be so quick now to buy seasons four and five when those come out. I'll wait and see if people report any problems/edits with the DVD's before I spend any money on them. The main reason I bought season three is because of the four part episode.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. My original plan was to collect the whole series, but now.....?????
Lee G 02-17-2007, 11:21 AM Talked to a friend of mine yesterday who also bought the third season. When he got back from the store and opened the box, disc 2 was missing. So he will have to take the DVD's back to the store and get a replacement. Unreal. The problems just keep on rolling in with IDOJ season three. Sony did a crap job with this set.
Another thing I noticed, take a look at the picture of Barbara Eden/Jeannie on the case that holds discs 1 & 2. The picture looks fake, like it was doctored up or something. Her face looks like it was painted, it doesn't look like an actual photograph.

The artwork on season 3 doesn't look bad to me, but if you want to see some BAD artwork, look at Samantha's face on the "disc-holder" box for Season 4 of Bewitched!

The missing disc happened to me with Hart to Hart: The Complete Second Season too. I imagine there is some machine that is left unattended or something like that where the discs run out and nothing is placed in the case. Very unprofessional!
I know what you mean about the "fake" Barbara Eden image. It almost looks like they took a "face" from somewhere else and drew the body around it or vice versa.
I didn't know about the episode problems. I haven't watched the set yet. But I must say, it is upsetting to find out about the cut with the bass drum. That is a very funny scene and the cut is a poor choice on Sony's part.
I would say it is Sony but so many of the studios have screwed up on a dvd set at one point. VEI had syndicated cuts of Kate & Allie on their sets and their delays are a constant habit. Warner issued a complete syndicated season of Mama's Family. Then, there's the whole Carsey-Warner thing with Cosby Show and Roseanne's first season sets. Someone at these companies doesn't think it is such a big deal.

Because of the various problems reported with season three, I am strongly considering not buying seasons four and five when those come out. I actually like seasons one and two of IDOJ the best, the episodes started getting silly with season three. I bought season three mainly because I wanted to have the four part episode where Jeannie accidentally gets locked inside the safe at NASA.

Hey, Lee I provided most of the photo elements and artwork for Season 3 and Sony screwed up the original version that they commissioned from me. The photo is actually of Barbara, during I Dream of Jeannie... However it was artistically altered. Basically it was more like a painting/oil work than an actual photo. The original version looks much nicer, though it is very obvious that it isn't photographic, and more artistic. When Sony used it on the Disc 1&2 case they messed it up. They over lightened it and put a yellow hue to it that washes it out. I may post the original version here in small scale to show you what I'm talking about. As I said, the original clearly isn't photographic, but it is much richer and the coloring is much more pleasant to look at.

Yep, it's pretty clear that the pic was altered. But the bigger concern is the flaws in the episodes. Do you have information as to why there are edits/problems with a few episodes on the DVD's? For example-Jeannie beating the drum edited out from MEET MY MASTERS MOTHER, and the jittery picture in the BOOTSIE NIGHTINGALE episode? There may be subtle edits in a few other episodes too that haven't been reported yet.

I'm in the process (literally as I type this) of finding out what exactly went wrong. I know that there are various source masters for the episodes as the 16mm episodes were transferred years back for syndication. It all depends on which source masters SONY has, and shockingly enough they may not have original uncut source masters of every episode after 40+ years which could explain the use of the syndication source master for Meet My Masters Mother.

It seems that the people at Sony were rushed to get these DVD's out. When you look at all the mistakes, stickers placed on the cellophane wrap that say the set contains 35 episodes, the mislabeling on the DVD cases that show episode 13 is on disc 3 when it's actually on disc 2, and the edits/picture problems in some episodes. Sony needs to be more careful and have better quality control and inspection prior to releasing DVD sets. Because of all the mishaps, I won't be so quick to buy seasons four and five, if in fact I decide to buy them at all.
IDoJOnline 02-22-2007, 09:03 PM There were quite a number of other errors on the packaging that I caught before they went to print. The problem with Episode 13 being listed improperly was something I couldn't know because, at that time I didn't have any copies of the actual set in my hand. But the cosmetic stuff, that I could catch, I did. Like them putting the wrong episode description for "Fly Me To the Moon" was the description for "Operation: First Couple on the Moon" until I saw it, and it was corrected.
Lee G 03-06-2007, 11:31 AM In addition to having the problem with a jittery picture, the BOOTSIE NIGHTINGALE episode also appears to have a small scene cut, similar to the cut they made in MEET MY MASTERS MOTHER. BOOTSIE NIGHTINGALE is not one of the better episodes of the series, but is a good example of the direction the show was taking in 1967-68. Silly plots bordering on the absurd, and not especially funny. The best part of BOOTSIE NIGHTINGALE is when Jeannie changes Tony's voice and he talks like a munchkin.
I contacted Sony regarding all the problems with the season three DVD's, of course I haven't heard back from them. I think they know full well what they did with these episodes, and I doubt they will do anything to correct the problems.
