View Full Version : is Good Times A Spinoff of Maude? wezzyfan 01-26-2007, 12:44 AM a debate been going on for months on the good times board. so my question is is Good Times A Spinoff of maude? wezzyfan 01-26-2007, 12:47 AM it have said all over the internet that good times is a spinoff of maude and books have said so and norman lear have said it was once. OnTheMarkTexas 05-05-2008, 09:47 PM I voted "no" and here's why: 1.) Florida's husband's name was Henry on "Maude", yet he was named James on "Good Times." 2.) There was never any mention of Florida ever being Maude's maid, nor of Florida and James (Henry) ever living in Harlem. "Good Times" firmly established that the Evans family had lived in Chicago without ever having lived elsewhere. 3.) Calling "Good Times" a spin-off of "Maude" is not incorrect, but technically, they took a character from another series and created an entirely new backstory without regard for how it would contradict what had been establised on "Maude." 4.) In an interview I read about the creation of the series, Eric Monte and Mike Evans (yes, Lionel from "The Jeffersons") had not conceived the show as a starring vehicle for Esther Rolle. They took their spec script to Norman Lear and he gave it back to them with some notes and ideas of his own. It was Lear's idea to structure the series around the character of Florida. Someone asking you your opinion on whether Good Times is a spinoff of Maude is like asking a 14 year old Girl who has the the best NBA player in the last 10 years. Solomon, there is no need to say that. That is her opinion. You can't make people agree with you. If you want to continue to think that the show is not, then you can. I respect the fact that you don't get influenced by others, but you stand on something that you believe and for that, I will not insult you. I just say let this be bro. ;) Jude The Obscure 05-12-2008, 11:49 AM Hey now Sol, that was kinda rude...... TVFactFan 05-12-2008, 11:57 AM Hey now Sol, that was kinda rude...... Do your thing. perrynyc 02-28-2010, 07:47 PM All the nitpicking about the minor changes of Florida and James (Henry) Evans from Good Times seem trivial compared to this. Blanksy's Beauties was a spinoff from Happy Days. Nancy Blansky (Nancy Walker) visited her cousin Howard Cunningham on one episode of Happy Days the week before the debut of Blansky's Beauties. Garry Marshall had Nancy Walker appear on Happy Days for the sole purpose of having Blansky's Beauties qualify as a Happy Days spinoff to give it a better chance of survival because Happy Days was a huge hit (like Maude). Only problem: Blansky's Beauties was set in then present time (1977) and Happy Days was set in the late 50's. This is a far greater inconsistency than any changes that occurred betweeen Maude and Good Times. To argue that Good Times is not a spinoff of Maude, you would also have to argue that Blansky's Beauties is not a spinoff of Happy Days. If this is the case, then why would Garry Marshall have Nancy Walker film an episode of Happy Days as the Nancy Blansky character to have it qualify as a spinoff despite the ridiculous time changes? The case is finally closed! TVFactFan 02-28-2010, 07:54 PM All the nitpicking about the minor changes of Florida and James (Henry) Evans from Good Times seem trivial compared to this. Also Blansky Beauties wasn;t a spinoff of Happy Days and we can debate on the spinoff board joeblow1970 03-09-2010, 01:07 PM HERE IS A CHALLENGE! Over 20 years ago Gimme A Break was on every day after school. Later at night Maude reruns were on. One night I watched Maude and the very next day GAB had almost the exact same episode, word for word for over 80% of the show. I'm too lazy to do it myself but I challenge someone to find the episode guides for GAB and Maude and discover which episode this is. RWCTV 04-05-2010, 03:36 AM I voted "no" and here's why: 2.) "Good Times" firmly established that the Evans family had lived in Chicago without ever having lived elsewhere. Actually, there was an episode of Good Times in which Florida said, "I was the best damn maid there ever was" or something along those lines. It was in one of the earlier episodes, but I remember applause from the audience. Like Irene and Brianna Remember them? Dude, I will never leave the site. I don't frequently post as much due to a hectic work schedule. Besides, I been doing it like this for a long, long time. I periodically check in. I will always be an active member of Sitcoms on line. I do post in remote parts of the boards where you will never find my posts unless you check out the specific section. Irene decided not to come back and its been almost two years since she made that decision. I still talk with her every now and again. Don't know about Brie though. I will admit that I have not been on the boards as much lately though. It's like a TV show a character is still in the opening credits although they miss a few episodes. TVFactFan 05-02-2010, 10:47 AM Dude, I will never leave the site. Because since this is a TV Site and no one is talking about TV then the site starts to become pointless-lol The Jeffersons Board was inactive even in 2004-lol I guess there are not a lot of fans of the show on this site.
