View Full Version : OK TV Researcher, Let's Talk
BuffaloBill 01-09-2007, 02:39 AM Fine, you say you want to talk to anyone who was in high school at least when TC was on the air ....lets go....I was 18 years old in sept 85 when 3's A Crowd went off the air. I had a good nine years of the show under my belt as a religious viewer of the show. Ask me anything that's on your mind.
regalbeagle 01-09-2007, 01:47 PM That guy has an age fetish. i made this post because im new and i thought there would be some educated people out there looking for an intelligent conversation. i guess that tvresearcher is set in his own ways.. I was trying to be nice but i guess you cant please everyone. I'm sorry i decided to post on here.
Ireneparalegal 01-09-2007, 01:56 PM I am 41 and enjoyed TC when it debuted. I was 12 when it first came on the air. I believe that if one enjoys a show and watches it religiously, it doesn't matter what age you are. I wasn't around when I LOVE LUCY debuted, but it still doesn't change that I am a Lucy fanatic and know more abt ILL than people who actually watched it during its run.
To me, it's like a good ol' movie that came out before you were born. It makes no difference, the movie is still the same. As for television shows, the show is still the same. Albeit, there are editings in many shows so you don't get the same "feel" as when it was on the air, but still you can have likes, dislikes, fave characters, etc. The only thing one can't comment on is what was going on while the show was on the air the first time. One can comment on the Suzanne and Joyce feud, but that was then, this is now. One can comment on how bringing in the Teri character changed the show, but that is something that occurred then, it makes no difference now.
I have a great memory for certain things abt television shows and even if I was only 9 or 10 years old, I can still have feelings or comments abt something I seen.

You may have knowledge of the show but you wouldn;t be able to tell me what people were saying about it in the summer of 1956. I'm not looking for info about tc, i have too much knowledge about the show, I'm just interested in individual experiences of older fans the time it was on the air.
TVFactFan 01-09-2007, 02:41 PM Fine, you say you want to talk to anyone who was in high school at least when TC was on the air ....lets go....I was 18 years old in sept 85 when 3's A Crowd went off the air. How did u feel after you watch the first ep of Three;s a Crowd?
Did you think it would last?
What was going through your mind during the absence of Chrissy in season 5?
Ireneparalegal 01-09-2007, 04:35 PM You may have knowledge of the show but you wouldn;t be able to tell me what people were saying about it in the summer of 1956. Well, I can't go back in time, but I do have several books that go into depth abt the fans of I Love Lucy, the fan clubs; there is one book that has a section abt the viewers from that era who watched it and how their lives revolved around the show, the true fanatics. I can't speak for anyone else nor can I say what was going on during the time of the show, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the show, how it changed television etc. To be honest, who cares if I wasn't around when it first aired. Watching current shows now, doesn't make me more of a fan than those who will be fans down the road. It doesn't make me MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE, it doesn't make my OPINION ANY LESS. I can't tell you what people were saying in 1956, but I can read books and read abt what people were saying, what their feelings were abt the show, how they felt abt changes, how they felt abt the show's end, etc. I could care less what the damn weather was at that time, I could care less what the gossip mill was, I could care less. Eventually those who watched ILL back then may not be alive anymore. I know there are fans who are still alive, but the day will come when those from that era won't be alive anymore and we have no choice BUT TO RELY ON BOOKS, MAGAZINES, INTERNET, etc. to read abt WHAT WAS SAID AND DONE BACK THEN.

Personal Experiences, Irene, Personal Experiences-lol
Ireneparalegal 01-09-2007, 07:06 PM Personal experiences can't be forever. Which is why eventually you have to rely on second hand stuff. No one lives forever, so how can you ask someone abt a show that debuted in 1955 if those viewers get old and eventually die? Just like historians who we must rely on when we want to learn abt world history, film and television, etc. If I want to know abt the Civil War, I can't get "personal experience" because who is alive to tell me? If I want to learn abt the first motion picture camera and all those people who were around then are now dead, who can I ask for information? I either have to rely on books, the net or film buffs/historians.
Fleet 01-09-2007, 07:38 PM I qualify, too! I am 45 and was 15 and 1/2 when "Three's Company" begain airing.
I actually remember watching the first episode, on a black & white TV. Pretty much by accident. I was changing channels and saw a guy waking up in a bathtub (Jack, of course). I thought it looked interesting so I watched the rest of the episode and became a weekly viewer.
I did not like at all when Chrissy was gone in 1980. I knew why it happened (in real life, not the characater), but it still was sad because it was right around the time that other characters started leaving popular TV shows (Ron Howard also left Happy Days in 1980). Laverne & Shirley left for California in 1980. So three big blows in 1980... not a good year for TV (for me, anyway). I liked '79 much better... and '78/'77 even more so.
Ireneparalegal 01-09-2007, 07:43 PM I just wanted to add something else. For those who watched shows but were real young, I like their opinions on the show because I find it interesting to know what went through their mind when they watched it. For example, the younger members here who watched TC when they were in grade school, what did they think when so many sexual innuendoes were mentioned? How did they see the show as a youngster? They have opinions also. It's great to hear how others saw the show when they were so young.
regalbeagle 01-09-2007, 08:00 PM Irene thank you, i started that last post just to chat with people abut the show.. what episodes did they like, favorite one liners.. This guy comes in and wants someone to analyze their thoughts that go back 30 years ago about the show. I feel like i should be in a psyc 101 instead talking on a chat forum.
As for the innuendos, of course at age 2 i wouldnt have understood them. I didnt beging watching the show until 82, i was 7 and thought some of the things were funny. overtime, i began to understand all the innuendos and they were quite funny. A person can go through many experiences in school and when u hear something u heard on tv things make more sense.. it was a great show.. but i didnt have any thoughts about chrissy leaving.. jack made the show, furley was hilarious, chrissy was dopey :)

During the Time when Chrissy was off the show and it was just Jack and Janet, did you think it would remain that way? Also was you saying to yoursef-"WHEN THE HELL IS CHRISSY COMING BACK?
regalbeagle 01-09-2007, 08:26 PM No, who would be thinking that?? Everyone knew there was a contract dispute the time and that she was kept off the show for those reasons...
Mr. Television 01-09-2007, 08:42 PM I'm 41 and I watched TC when it originally aired. I remember watching the 1st episode. It was about the time we finally got 2 tv sets. My Mom was pregnant with my sister so she had her tv in the bedroom and for the first time I was in charge of the tv in the living room. Back then she loved The Waltons and the other CBS Thursday shows so we had to watch them. Anyway I was just channel surfing and I happened to come across TC. I didn't know what it was and some of the jokes went over my head but I knew that it was a laugh out loud funny comedy and I watched it until TAC ended in 1985.

Most 15 Years old don't BUY NEWSPAPERS so that's why I ask what the person was thinking in regards to Chrissy
Ireneparalegal 01-09-2007, 09:28 PM There was TELEVISION NEWS and ENTERTAINMENT NEWS too, not everything was in the paper Solomon. I can recall the dispute abt the contracts and reading teen magazines abt this dispute too. People at school talked abt it. There was never an inkling that Suzanne was coming back. We moved on. I was 12 when this show debuted, but I recall some other shows from when I was younger and reading or hearing abt things going on on the television news. We also had Rona Barrett and other famous "gossipers" who kept us in the light as to what was going on.
BTW, fifteen year olds DON'T BUY NEWSPAPERS, but they do read them. Also, teens DO BUY MAGAZINES. I know I did.

Did you follow Three's a Crowd every Tuesday for the first couple of Months it aired?

Yea I remember all that and you're right. I never thought Suzanne was coming back. I just remember thinking it was strange that she was still in the opening credits but was hardly on the show.
I remember their was a lot of publicity when Priscilla joined the show too. I didn't follow the backstories of a lot of tv shows until I was in HS but TC was very public.
Fleet 01-09-2007, 10:35 PM During the Time when Chrissy was off the show and it was just Jack and Janet, did you think it would remain that way? Also was you saying to yoursef-"WHEN THE HELL IS CHRISSY COMING BACK?
I was hoping Chrissy would eventually return. I tuned in each week hoping that somehow she would be in the episode. I figured if it went on long enough, there would be a replacement for Chrissy (just like on Charlie's Angels). When Cindy Snow showed up, I figured it was highly unlikely that Chrissy would return. :(
BuffaloBill 01-09-2007, 11:31 PM The first episode of 3's a Crowd was weak. I recall that Vickey's mom was introduced. Overall the show was Ok, but I would have prefered more of the old TC guest appearences. Perhaps they should have gave it another season.Overall nothing really stands out to may as memorable moments. I think part of the problem was No network , even our local station ever aired reruns. As far as Chrissy leaving the show that's simple. It was well publicized she had been fired by the fall of 80...and it was just a matter of time when a replacement would be brought in. Remember back in 80 they finished filming the season around Dec, so you already new by reports that Harrison was comming in.

I always felt that Felipe should have been the Chef instead of WACKY EZ on Three's a Crowd
regalbeagle 01-10-2007, 12:29 PM well then you think most 15 year olds arent educated... at 15 i knew many people who had newspaper routes, read newspapers, books etc.. you can read at 15, and if someone is a fan of a show trust me they will find out all about the goings on if they want too.

Believe me not a lot of 15 years buy newspapers
Ireneparalegal 01-10-2007, 12:37 PM Believe me not a lot of 15 years buy newspapers
There you go again. NO they may not BUY them, but they DO READ THEM. We had the newspaper delivered to our house, so I have been reading the newspaper since I was ten.
regalbeagle 01-10-2007, 02:07 PM This guy doesnt get it. i never said buy, i said read... geez... your questions are too psychological..
Ireneparalegal 01-10-2007, 02:12 PM Also, since we are a so close to L.A. we also would get the L.A. Times, (still do) and there is so much info there regarding the entertainment business (obviously)...I remember when I was 9 reading the L.A.Times and getting all this information abt the stars and so forth. I have always loved to read and I think it all started with reading the newspaper at such a young age.
regalbeagle 01-10-2007, 10:09 PM Irene u are so right.... Everyone can have their own opinions and views on the show... I began reading newspapers at age 7.. I mean seriously certain events stick with kids..
As far as three;s acrowd, not a bad show , a little boring, only funny when the father used to run in on them..
now hooperman was a good show, too bad it didnt last long.. remember bijou that cute dog :)

That's how I felt about Three's A Crowd, it was also a little slow. Instead of TC, they should have had Felipe be Jack's other Chef.

I don't know why they didn't do that either. I seem to recall reading somewhere that "fresh faces" was what they were going with...although, why mess with a good thing, if it works, then why fix it? Felipe was a DAMN GOOD CHARACTER.
regalbeagle 01-11-2007, 12:04 PM Gino confroti wanted to spend more time with his family.. He was offered the position as chef but declined after three's company ended..
Ireneparalegal 01-11-2007, 12:36 PM That can't be true, because look at his work AFTER THREE'S COMPANY:

You may have been 8 in 1977 but it's not old enough for me to talk to you about certain things. If you missed a 2007 TV show and you wanted to know what happened, would you ask your wife or girlfriend or your 8 year old daughter?
WalrusIsPaul 01-11-2007, 07:37 PM Depends on what i wanted to know

So you watch Three's Company at 9pm at the Age of 8? Is that what you are telling me?
Ireneparalegal 01-11-2007, 08:09 PM Man, I knew kids who stayed up til 11 watching t.v. back in the days. You must have had a curfew when you were young Solomon. I know when I was 8 years old, I had my own television in my room and watched t.v. til 11pm. or until I fell asleep.

I had my own TV but at age of 8 i think I was sleep by 9pm. No way my mom would have let the TV stay on in my room until 11pm at 8 years old-lol
Ireneparalegal 01-11-2007, 08:33 PM That's why I lowered the volume on mine!
WalrusIsPaul 01-11-2007, 10:44 PM Ah yes i didwatch it 9pm when i was 8,there was never an issue with my parents. My mom watched it too
Karen64 01-28-2007, 12:43 PM I was 13 when it debuted; I loved the show! (Although most of the risque jokes flew over my head!)
I do remember at the time how the show was critisized (sp?) by by the media and the critics as being too racy, and how TC and other shows like Charlie's Angels were called "jiggle TV"!

I didn't think it would last much longer, because they were starting to run out of fresh story lines; although at 17, I didn't really care one way or the other. (Didn't watch much TV then-too busy running around with my hoodlum buddies and enjoying the freedoms that come with being a little older:lol: )
I did wonder just how many blonde roomies they were going to go through before it was all said and done!

Karen64 01-28-2007, 02:19 PM Not really..at that time, I was always on the phone, exchanging homework answers or talking to my boyfriend! (I recall being yelled at for being on the phone too much, too! LOL!)
