There's the classic Public Service Announcement...with the eggs..."This is your brain on drugs."

There's one that's always stuck with me. I want to say it was back in the early 90s. It's for summer water safety.

It's a sunny summer's day, and we're seeing a neighborhood from an aerial view. There's a radio playing, with the announcer saying how nice the weather is, etc....the camera pans over the perfect neighborhood...kids playing.

The camera stops, and the radio announcer's voice gets louder as he says, "What a great day to be in the water!" At that precise moment, we see a teen-aged boy, floating face down in a swimming pool, dead.

There is one in particular that stood out for me and it was one about train safety. This woman is trying to drive across the tracks to beat the train, but she get stuck on the tracks. She gets out, but she can't get back door open to get her baby out. Next thing we see is the train smash into the car before she's able to get the baby out. That one was scary.

 I never saw that one.

There was one that I vaguely remember. Some young kids are sitting around drinking. Instead of their own heads, they have donkey's heads or something....voiceover says something about how drinking causes you to make an ass out of yourself.

I also remember the one about drinking and driving. All we see is a closeup of two beer mugs doing a sort of cheers thing...but they smash into each other, beer flying everywhere, in sort of slow motion. Voiceover: Friends don't let friends drive drunk.

There's one currently airing about Internet predators. It shows a young teen IMg, and it then shows the "teen" she thinks she's communicating with...some old fat creepy looking guy. He might even be in his underwear, lol.

A recent PSA campaign that gave me the chills was when they would show real families' home videos, usually small children...all happy and smiling. Then, written across the screen, we're told that they were killed by a drunk driver.

I saw that a long time ago. I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Was it a poorly negotiated turn that caused Dean's accident? I know speed was a factor, but didn't know anything beyond that. Very tragic.

Of course the famous "this is your brain on drugs" with the fried eggs is the one that first came to mind. I remember first seeing that as a kid in the 1980s. Back then the DARE program was just getting started, and McGruff ("take a bite out of crime") and Smokey the Bear were still pretty popular.

Another one I don't see mentioned here was the anti-littering ad with the Native American. That's the one where the one tear rolls down his face. I also remember it was spoofed quite often.

Did anyone ever see this drunk driving PSA with 4 people in a car and they all turn to skeletons? I remember seeing that as a tiny kid back in the mid-80s and it scared the crap out of me. Am I the only one who remembers this one?

Then there are the Crash Test Dummies. I believe Lorenzo Music (aka Garfield) did one of the voices.

Also, Just Say No to Drugs. How about the angry father who sees his teenage son with an illegal substance. "I learned it by watching you!!"

In Ohio (and probably other states) there's the "click it or ticket" campaign. That is if you are caught driving with no seat belt on you get a ticket.

Then there is Partnership for a Drug Free America. Most of those PSAs tended to air in the afternoons during the soaps.

Reading about the child predator/internet public safety campaign makes me think of how different things were when I was a kid in the 1980s.

At school they would show us these 8mm films about strangers trying to lure kids into their cars with candy, toys, etc. My mother has said more than once how happy she is that all three of her kids were well into their teens before the internet got really popular.

I remember the same thing growing up in the 80's. I was always hearing about kidnappers and seeing faces of missing children on t.v. and such. I can even remember an incidence of a van driving down the court I lived on (I'd say this was late 80's, early 90's) and trying to lure my brother with candy so he could get him in the car. Thank god my brother was on a bike and pedaled away faster than anything (and the guy even tried to do the same thing with another boy on the block a few minutes later!) I'll always remember that because I'll never forget how frightening it was.

I hadn't seen that in years, thanks. It was great.

There were two that terrified me as a kid:
an antismoking PSA called 'Johnny Smoke" with a cartoon cigarette with a cowboy-outlaw black eye mask and black hat with a pack of cigarettes as a "gun" --I was always terrified of that.

And another one, about driving safety. They had these object lessons, where there would be these animated ( crudely ) cars that would demonstrate accidents with scary, tragic music. One sad one had car #5 trying to pass a linup of 4 other cars on a single-lane highway ( or would that be 2-lane? It isn't the four lane highway we are used to, these days ).
The car #1 was going too slowly, #2 was too far away from car #1, and making things slower, still, and car #3 and #4 seemed to be the only innocent ones. Car #5 made its fatal error and tried to pass, but bashed headfirst into a car coming the other way, kliing himself and five people in the other car.

Both of these horrified me. It may have contributed to my terror of driving a car. I never will smoke, anyway.
