View Full Version : I finally got to watch the infamous "Judith Cohen Story" and was really disappointed. Janice Johnson 12-14-2006, 02:15 PM That it was not that bad! I was expecting a real stinker judging from the bashing that this episode got. I kind of liked it!:) a lot of people probably don;t like it because the episode got away from the typical Good Times episode with the Evans in a financial Jam and the fact that it was a Overweight White Woman who was not that much of a looker, most feel that it didn;t feel like a GOOD TIMES ep. i really liked it Ireneparalegal 12-14-2006, 03:02 PM a lot of people probably don;t like it because the episode got away from the typical Good Times episode with the Evans in a financial Jam and the fact that it was a Overweight White Woman who was not that much of a looker, most feel that it didn;t feel like a GOOD TIMES ep. i really liked it Solomon, don't lie. I have never said I didn't like it because she is white and overweight. Brie has never said that either. I can't recall anyone stating that. Her looks had nothing to do with it. I was just guessing, and it wouldn;t mean that u were racist because u didn;t like it because she was white, it would just mean that you felt she was not a good fit for the Good times situation. vashti1999 12-14-2006, 03:12 PM I said she looked like a clown, maybe that's it. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=2246453&postcount=11 TVFactFan 12-14-2006, 03:20 PM I said she looked like a clown, maybe that's it. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=2246453&postcount=11 you were supposed to look past her physical look and appreciate her talents-lol vashti1999 12-14-2006, 03:33 PM you were supposed to look past her physical look and appreciate her talents-lol I'd appreciate her talents, just not on Good Times. The way Judy performed wasn't all about her singing voice to me, but how she started off with a peppy, happy go-lucky, up beat song, then BOOM, turned it around to a sad, emotional, heart felt song, then BOOM, right back to being up beat. I stumbled across this thread because I saw the Judy Cohen episode and was curious if she did anything besides "Good Times." Now I'm just trying to understand why one person keeps insisting that everyone hated the episode because Judy was white and unattractive. I think "I found the episode boring" says it all; some folks simply weren't entertained by it. What's the confusion? I'd hardly call that racist. Some folks thought Jimmie Walker wasn't funny. Ah well. As long as I'm here, Judy Cohen was clearly talented, but it did seem like a strange episode, compared to the rest of the series. I find it hard to believe that a cabaret act about clowns would be a big smash in that establishment. Again, the song was lovely, she had a nice voice, but I'd expect to something artsy and Broadway like that in the Village. TVFactFan 07-16-2009, 09:46 PM Wow. Send in the Clowns was a Broadway song. "Send in the Clowns" is a song by Stephen Sondheim from the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. It is a ballad from Act II in which the character Desirée reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life. Sondheim created the song specifically for the actress Glynis Johns who created the role of Desirée on Broadway. It became Sondheim's most popular song after Judy Collins recorded it in 1975. Subsequently, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Tiger Lillies and many other famous artists have recorded the song, and it became a jazz standard. TofuStud 07-27-2009, 12:08 AM I bought Good Times the complete series on DVD and I'm on season 4, so I came across this one. This was very difficult for me to sit through. Race is not the issue and I loath when people pull out the race card, especially when they're trying to challenge someone's opinion about something as trivial as a 30+ year old television show. The episode doesn't fit and is seriously unfunny. I remember thinking it was bizarre when I saw it as a kid. I always figured it had to be setup for a failed/canceled spin-off or something. ChauncyGardener 02-28-2011, 08:52 PM I agree with those who say this episode sucked. The Judith Cohen character was a type better suited to a Woody Allen movie or Taxi eisode than Good Times. And why is Judith Cohen credited as playing 'herself' (as though she was 'somebody') when it's clearly a fictitious character and 'the real Judith Cohen' wasn't famous (then or now)? Weird. The Evans just don't seem like the Evans here. Was it intended maybe as a pilot of sorts for a Judith Cohen sitcom? Who'd have cared? Or did Norman Lear just want to show blacks getting along nice with a Jewish girl? Who knows - it was a real lame, awkward episode, notable only cause it's SO seventies. I feel 'malaise' just thinking about it. TVFactFan 02-28-2011, 10:00 PM I agree with those who say this episode sucked. I guess based on this thread a lot of people felt the same way...lol. I notice sometimes when sitcoms go way off the mark and heavily feature another character, it is often a setup for a spin-off. I'm not exactly sure that was happening here, but it was extremely different from the typical Good Times episodes where the Evans family are heavily featured along with the guest stars. Plus, Good Times was a Norman Lear show, and he was pretty notorious for creating spin-offs. Several sitcoms that were on the air in the 70s extended from other shows already on the air.
