Great news!!!
But I don't really like the cover pic from the season 5 DVD set. That shot of Cybill looks like a pic from around the time of The Cybill Show, not Moonlighting.
Does anyone remember that photo?

It's a very deceptive picture. Except for possibly half of the first episode, they aren't together to speak of during the fifth season. As such, they look much too happy.

But most of the sets have had inaccurate pictures, so I guess it figures.

CyBr
12-13-2006, 04:49 PM
Agreed. It's not a very good picture. I'm guessing they pasted them together because I've never seen it before. I hope that's not a bad omen for the DVDs. They're very vague about the commentaries too.

My first impression was that David's picture is a still from the shoot for "Money Talks."

In the entire fifth season that I can think of, they never show up looking like that together.

I can only think that they were trying to open it up to people who have never seen the show before, because it can't possibly fool the older fans.

But don't get me started on that...

The picture is promotional material from the Cybill show. I really don't like this cover!

And about the "extras".....what screen tests? We already saw Bruce's and unless I am wrong, Cybill did not need to test for the show.

OMG, that cover is atrocious!!!! I mean, the color of the box is nice and the moon is cute. But, oh, that picture! It's just awful. Who came up w/ that idea?

I am thrilled that season 5 is coming out though. :) Thanks for posting the info.

yes the cover is absolutely horrible. Who puts these covers together? Believe me i am thrilled that season 5 is coming out on dvd. Regardless of how i feel about the last few episodes(YUCK) i still wanted to have a full set of my favorite tv show. And Diane is right about the screen tests. What are these new ones that no one knows about? Ugh i wonder who will do commentaries together. Should i hope for B/C together? Yeah right. Oh well still happy for season 5 dvds!

Bruce and Cybill did a screen test together for the network suits. As you all know, the ABC execs were not sold on Bruce so Cybill agreed to screentest with him. I discussed this in my interview with director Robert Butler. Maybe this is the screentest we will finally be seeing. It would certainly help DVD sales for Season 5! Here's a portion of that interview:

http://moonlighting21.com/issue11/robert_interview_pt1.pdf

DM: Can you talk about
directing Bruce’s screen test
and your initial impression of
him? I mean, you were there
during the audition process,
correct?
RB:Yes, yes. We had met him once in
New York and the guys, Glenn and others,
were impressed. I didn’t really
remember him and then there was a
second
interview here on the coast. He was
out here on someone else's dime, interviewing
for something else, and he came
in and just took over. Took charge of the
reading powerfully, amusingly. He had
nothing to lose and just came on strong.
Walked around the room as though he
owned the furniture. It was great and he
scored like mad! We adored him. Glenn
had liked him all along and he was a
home run for all of us. We took Bruce to
the network and fifteen, eighteen people
adored him and he was a home run there
too, except the boss. Lew Erlicht was a
very good, smart executive at ABC. He
said, "Okay, everybody in this room
adores this guy and I don’t get it, so what
we have to do is prove me wrong!" Very
good leadership. And he said, "Here’s
how we do that. We shoot a little test and
poll a test audience and see what the hell
happens." So we said, "Ok, great." Well,
we didn’t do no little test. We mounted
a three scene series with Cybill. We got
some nice sets, shot this nice three-scene
test with Bruce and Cybill and showed it,
and "Bingo!" It went through the sky.

Lew Erlicht acquiesced, and that’s the
Bruce Willis story.
DM: Yes, because on the
pilot DVD, they show a
screen test but it’s not with
Cybill. They show it with
another actress.
RB: That would be the videotape test
done in New York probably. I don’t
think he was video taped here but routinely
in New York, as you know, they
put actors on to tape. I think it was
Bruce’s second piece of work on film.
He was on Miami Vice as a guest star
and as we were shooting the pilot we
broke for awhile so we could watch a
lot of the Miami Vice.

Hi All, Go back and listen to the commentary for the pilot during the bar scene. They mention that this scene was used as the screen test. They also commented about how the screen test version was better than the pilot version. I'm only speculating that this is the dvd extra, but I hope I'm correct.

Yick :( That is a terrible cover for the fifth episode. I will never figure out why all those terrific photos of them were taken to promo the fifth season. I am glad those photos exist though, as they are beautiful :) They should have used one of the ones of them wrapped around each other but looking sad or something in my humble opinion.
Anywho...I am really happy that we are sure the last season will be available to us for purchase, so I can complete my collection of dvd's. I am afraid that when I buy it I will watch the "scary" eps though and put myself in some kind of irreversible funk :(

Okay!!! I have thought on it and I would have used the cover from season four's dvd on season five instead. And used a different pic for season four's dvd. No real compaint with covers for one and two or three seasons. Although them being switched on season three's is annoying.

That cover is uuuuuuugly! And clearly photo-shopped even to an inexperienced eye. She looks about 15 years older than him, which stands to reason since his photo is from S2 and hers is from--what?--last Thursday?!? I don't know guys, if a picture is worth a 1,000 words.... I'd start preparing myself for some serious disappointment for the S5 extras.

Have they used any of the Liebowitz photos on past DVD covers? Anybody remember? If so, why oh why, didn't they spring for another one of those beauties... as opposed to this nightmare.

Sorry to be so negative, but it feels like watching Lunar Eclipse all over again.

DUh.......I didn't even think of that joint screen test....and we all know the story of them asking Cybill to do something with Bruce to show to the network.

The visions of sugarplums dancing in my head have taken possession of my brain!

I am hopeful that that is the one we will see. Although the release does say screen testS (plural) for Bruce and Cybill.

Maybe some other surprises........

It''s so exciting to know that, with this final release, everyone who supported the release of the series on DVD has helped to accomplish that goal. Feels good, doesn't it?

I guess it's too early to start nagging about a full five season set, huh?

Did anyone else have this reaction to the season 5 cover pic:

Bruce looks around 30, Cybill looks around 45.
This will really "stick it to her".

That was my initial reaction - that it was done to make her really angry.

I can think of no other reason to put a pic of Cybill from "Cybill" on the cover of the DVD set other than to upset her. There are hundreds of pics of Cybill during Moonlighting's run - if you are going to use a really young David pic, then use a really young Maddie pic. Enough said!!!

I absolutely HATE this cover and i really hope that they change it . Why oh why would Lionsgate use a picture of them pasted together and not only that but one of Cybill that isn`t even from her Moonlighting days. Like CyBr said there are hundreds of really great photos that were taken of them TOGETHER.
Cybill is gonna be MAD at this latest dig. Maybe i`m being a bit dim but i always thought that anything like this had to be aprovedby everyone involved including both Bruce and Cybill.Lets just hope that what`s inside more than makes up for it!.

Yeah, I was thinking the promo shots for season 5 were really nice too, they could have chosen anything...

Here is a direct address for Lion's Gate.

Lions Gate Entertainment
2700 Colorado Ave., Suite 200
Santa Monica, CA 90404

Perhaps snail mail may be the more impressive way to go.

I've got to say, I really dislike the falseness of the cover as well. But I can't imagine that it is a real or perceived slap at Cybill -- I am pretty sure it is Lion's Gate themselves making the cover art choices.

I think they created the first problem for themselves by using the season 5 picture on the season 4 dvds......where do you go from there?

Let me throw this idea out....does anybody think the decision could be financial? Picture copyrights don't come cheap, and lets face it, the amount of money spent on each season's dvds has dimished.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad to get the season 5 dvds, just to complete the series....I had my doubts that it was ever going to happen. But I sure wish this cover art would just go away.

If we get all 5 seasons in a boxed set, maybe it will look better, cause then they may be able to reuse pictures already on the other covers and inserts.

kismet
12-15-2006, 10:34 AM
There are so many pics that they could have chosen.

There is basically a 15 year age difference between the two pics - one is circa 1985 and the other is circa 1995.

If they "paid" for a young pic of Bruce's character, why couldn't they "pay" for an early Moonlighting pic of Cybill.

It doesn't make any sense to me at all. Again, I can think of no other reason to put that "Cybill" shot of Cybill on the cover except to upset her, and make Bruce look good.

If there is money for Bruce, then there should be money for Cybill.
Why wouldn't the price for a two-shot be the same as for a single??? if picture copyrights are the reason.

kismet
12-15-2006, 10:43 AM
Added thought - I will still buy the season 5 set to complete my collection, but I will put my own pic on the cover.

This cover pic stuff reminds me of my surprise when I opened my DVD of Seduced. The cover pic had nothing to do with the movie. The movie was from 1985 and the cover pic looked like it was from the 1990's. Again, why?
In the case of Seduced, maybe it was financial? I doubt they made much money off of that one, even though it is one of my favorite Cybill DVDs.

Me neither Diane. But I wonder how is possible that they like the cover.
There are nothing true, they aren't really together, the pics are not from season 5... It's sad. I don't know if is a financial problem but I don't believe is a big deal!
I hope all will go ok at the end!

A couple other times, there were later announcements about other extras, a little closer to the release dates; now I have no idea what other extras would be in this case, but it would be really cool if they chucked in some outtakes, spare footage, things like that. Purely wishful thinking on my part, but man would it be cool.

I will watch/or listen to all of the episodes up to When Girls Collide. I cannot stomach that episode, nor can I watch Lunar Eclipse except for the final montage.
There are some scenes in the episodes leading up to WGC that I have to listen to and not watch because they bother me for various reasons.

In fact, I was listening to Plastic Fantastic Lovers way back in the early 90's when I heard those interesting words said by Bruce Willis:

""...most drop dead gorgeous broad I've(d) ever seen in my real life."
It dropped me dead in my tracks, and I said to myself "WHAT IF?" What if all that we were lead to believe was not entirely true? What if??????
I began to watch all of Moonlighting in a different way. I began to watch Moonlighting from a "they sure didn't hate each other most of the time" kind of way, and I will never change my mind on that point.
I believe they fought, oh yeah, and I believe they screamed and yelled and pouted and threw stuff, BUT I also believe that they cared very deeply for each other, and NO ONE will ever change my mind about that!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear yer sister!! and AMEN:wave:

I really enjoyed season 5 ( except for the obvious ones) AND i believe that Bruce and Cybills chemistry was just as potent as in the previous seasons . It`s just that the writers didn`t give the characters much opportunity to express it .
To be honest i tend to watch the early season 5 episodes more often than i do the season 4 eps when Maddie and David are apart.

It really tears me apart when i read articles that say how terrible Moonlighting had become by season 5, because i totally disagree.

Three cheers for season 5 ( but let`s just not mention A***e or Luner Eclipse.)

New information thingy at tvshowsondvd.com (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/releaseinfo.cfm?ReleaseID=6352). It's just the technical details of the box set, apparently three discs-- but astoundingly, the blurb here uses information from seasons one and three.

Thanks for posting the link.
I noticed that it said screen tests of Bruce and Cybill now does that mean seperate screen tests or is the one of the two of them together in that wonderful dancing scene in the bar- you know the one that Jay described as MAGICAL and probably had more chemistry than thre actual one we see in the pilot!

BOY do i hope it`s the later one!!

CyBr
01-14-2007, 10:03 AM
I'm assuming it's one with both of them together. Didn't Bruce say on one of the DVD's that Cybill didn't have to test because "she's Cybill Shepherd?" She did one with him just to show the networks their great chemistry!

Well, I finally received my season 5 set (from my kids for Easter).
I have only watched scenes from two episodes: A Womb With A View (up to the baby shower sadness), amd In 'n Outlaws -- the couch scene looks a little different to me, after Viola enters the room - maybe it's just that my memory is a little off.

The screen test between Bruce and Cybill didn't seem as "ELECTRIC" as I expected it to be. I'm going to watch it again today to give it another chance, since I didn't have to time on Easter to really study it.

Did anyone listen to Dennis Dugan's commentary? I just can't get myself to watch any of those final trilogy episodes.

laura a

The screen test between Bruce and Cybill didn't seem as "ELECTRIC" as I expected it to be.

I felt a little let down myself , i was hoping that LionsGate were going to use the one that Jay mentions during his commentary in Big Man On Mulberry Street. - The one that Jay calls "magical"
It`s of Bruce and Cybill doing the dance scene from the pilot.
I wonder why it wasn`t included ( maybe ABC couldn`t find it)

Yeah i enjoyed watching it but there was something about it that i can`t quite put my finger on....

And yeah i did force myself into watching Lunar ( with the commentary!)
although i wish i hadn`t .
Sorry Dennis but the whole commentary was a bore from start to finish
he seemed more interested in talking about himself and self promotion than telling us what we REALLY wanted to know. And none of what Dennis did say about the episode make me like Lunar any better.
Although i will give him credit for one thing ..... he did mention how great Cybill was and how great she was to work with. Finally someone acknowledging Cybills wonderful talent ( seeing that certain others were never forth coming with many compliments , during any of their commentaries)
( mentioning no names!!).

Having said all of that it was really nice to hear both Glenn and Jay commenting on Bruce and Cybill`s wonderful chemistry and talking about the heat generated between them. But shame on Glenn for not doing his homework on WWAV before ,as it seemed to me he could barely remember anything about that particular episode.
On the whole though i`m glad that i bought the season 5 dvds and i think it was money well spent.
