View Full Version : What are your jobs/professions?
dragster58 12-13-2006, 10:40 AM   I'm sure this thread was launched before, but here goes. I'm a bilingual ESOL English teacher, translator, interpreter/Cambridge PET/KET/BCE/FCE examiner. I've been at it for over 20 odd years and have been working in Italy-UK-Belgium for so long it's not funny anymore! I love my job and wouldn't trade it in for anything in the world. I work loooong hours esp at my notebook (for online translations, etc.), BUT the $$$ is extremely good!! Mind you, it wasn't always like that. I've cleaned out public toilets, lakes, worked in numerous factories, done heaps of shift work, worked the boats, etc, etc, etc. before this but know I feel really accomplished. And you?

Yooch 12-13-2006, 09:12 PM Currently, I teach eighth grade English. I am also a credentialed Spanish teacher and have taught it for many years. I have been teaching in the same school for 17 years and in the same district for 25 years. Although I do like my job--great colleagues and staff, and for the most part enjoy working with students, I have often wondered about working in journalism, advertising copywriting, or voiceover work. It might be something I'd like to try as an avocation when I retire. I also coach track. Next spring will be my fifth year doing that. I'm a content person basically, but there's always that 'spark' that beckons me to other pursuits and goals. :)

Hi friend.   Nice to meet you too. I have often thought of interpreting or translating, but never thought I could make a living at it. I'm very good at it, but most companies don't hire people for full-time, in-house positions for interpreting/translating. Most interpreters/translators in the U.S. are either freelancers or part-timers, with no benefits. Even though teaching is comparatively underpaid, we do get good benefits. Health costs here, if out-of-pocket, are astronomical and if you don't have insurance, you're pretty much s*****d if you have a major health care need.
If you have any tips regarding getting into the translating/interpreting field, I'd be happy to hear them, as well as your experiences in that field. It was great to hear from you. Feel free to PM.

JO jr 12-15-2006, 04:20 AM Pls tell me more about this book....I'm curious!!
WELL, IN OUR BOOK, "HOW TO BE A HO IN HO-LLYWOOD, WE HAVE SEVERAL CHAPTERS TO CHOSE FROM. SOME OF WHICH ARE:
CHAPTER 1: "BECOMING A HO WITHIN 10 EASY STEPS" IT'S AS EASY AS 1,2,3,10
CHAPTER 4: "PIMP VS. SELF EMPLOYMENT" ASK YOURSELF. WOULD YOU RATHER GET THE CRAP BEAT OUT OF YA OR DECLARE TAXES? THIS CHAPTER IS A REAL TEARJERKER.
CHAPTER 5: "HOW TO CHOOSE MAKEUP AND CLOTHING THAT WILL GET YOU THE MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK" WE INCLUDE WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THAT TOP MODEL, JANICE DICKENSON. FOR EXAMPLE, ON PAGE 56, SHE GIVES SUCH POIGNANT ADVICE: "GIRL, JUST CUZ YOU IS A HO, DON'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO DRESS LIKE ONE!" I KNOW. WE WERE STUNNED, TOO. THIS ADVICE IS NOT JUST FOR THE BEGINNER HO, BUT SEASONED PROFESSIONALS CAN ALSO BENEFIT.
CHAPTER 8: "HOW TO SELECT YOUR CLIENTEL" "THINK THAT MAN IN THE SUIT IS A VIABLE CANDIDATE? STUPID! THAT'S A PIMP!" AH, YES, WE COULD NOT COMPLETE THIS BOOK WITHOUT THE FUNNY, BUT OH SO REAL HUMOR OF ANOTHER HO FRIEND OF OURS, MARGARET. EXCEPT, SHE'S A HO OF A HO, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
I HOPE I'VE GIVEN YOU A LITTLE INSIGHT ON OUR BOOK. THERE ARE OF COURSE, MORE CHAPTERS, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'D BE INTERESTED.
WELL, WE GOTTA RUN...GOT WORK TO DO
LONG LIVE JO:cool:
