Well, it has been speculated that the killer was a disgruntled sports fan (the victim, Dick Hansen, had the physical stature of an athlete). But that remains just a theory.

The license plate also read something like "49rHugz." Wasn't it also theorized that the disgruntled sports fan had something against the 49'ers?

The segment might have implied it, but it never explicitly said such a thing; it only mentioned the general theory of the killer being "a disgruntled fan".

I always thought the guy had applied for that identical personalized plate and was furious to discover it was already taken. Once he found the owner, no choice but to blow him away.

I thought the killer was a creepy nerd looking guy and pretty much mute during the whole scene and scares the bejesus out of me when he looks up at the lady after he shoots her friend for what seems like a very long time.

When the female friend was recounting what happened that night, she said that Dick Hansen walked up to the driver, apparently asked why they were being followed, the driver responded, then Hansen said, (in her words) "Get the blankety blank out of here!"
