I bought one about a week before Christmas in 2004. Hard to believe it's been 2 years now. I can't even remember how things worked before. It's just so much better.

Fortunately, I don't have to buy one. My roomate just recently bought one, so I just use hers whenever she's not home.

Yea that sucks. The K-Mart here in town still carries them though and if it really comes to it I got hundreds of VHS tapes with movies on it. I can always use a few of them that I don't watch anymore. I'm more concerned with the VCRs then I am the tapes. I just don't see a reason to get one right now. I buy Movie and TV DVDS anyway and as far as taping I use the VCR to tape shows that I erase anyhow.

It's an upgrade because the DVD recorder that I currently have, doesn't have a hard drive.

I looked at a couple that cost roughly $400. They were both Samsung. Philips has one that's $300. That was at Walmart.com

Consumersearch.com (http://www.consumersearch.com/www/electronics/dvd-recorders/index.html) I went here to find out which was the best brand to get.

What does a DVD recorder with a hard drive do that a DVD recorder without a hard drive can;t do?

It makes it easier to copy stuff from one dvd to another, for one thing. I could save whatever I want to copy on the hard drive and then put it on another dvd. Also, I could put all my Norman Lear shows I have, on tape and dvd, on the hard drive and then just copy them to a disc.

I also don't have a DVD recorder....yet. Funny you brought this up because I was looking at the prices on a couple of them at Wal-Mart about 1.5 weeks ago. They're down to about $60-70 for the cheaper name brands. Wow! That's a long way from their original $400+ price some years ago.

Anyway, I plan on buying one. It might even be sometime in 2007. My TV is so new that I can't get my cable connections to record stuff on TV, so maybe a DVD recorder will just be something I need to record stuff.

I want to spend close to $500 since it will be something I will use everyday. I would never pay $60 for DVD recorder

Too Low for me

Well I'm happy with what I bought it's compatible with DVD-R. DVD-RW, CD, CD-RW it's hard to find that for the price I got mine for. It'll be a waste to spend $400 on something that does the exact samething as mine. If you ask me that's a steal and I had been shopping around for one every since January.

I wasn't looking for a steal I wanted something with atleast 80 GB and that's what I found. Everything that I was finding didn't have a hard drive at all. You could just record and that's all, you could make menus or anything on the ones that I was finding, and they weren't compatible with all the DVD-Rs and such. So when I found this one and it had everything that I was looking for, I bought it. That's a damn good price for what all it does.
